Im trippin over here, alarms that is.....

I headed out alone I have no friends. Anyway when you are poor and lonely UE seems to fit right in there. I park downtown with a few ideas of some cool spots to do I hit the street. Finding myself on the waterfront as 2 steamboats seem to be letting passengers off I say to myself I will stow away tonight on one of these famous local boats. I realize I cant get on now so I figure Ill go get on a rooftop that I was previously too much of a puss to do.

Last week I did its twin building twice. Its a gnarly climb for a noob- 25 stories up a ladder on the side of the building. I was in arguably the best UE company possible when I pussed out a month or so before. It was heavy on my mind until one day I said f it I can do that. And I did So anyway I did basically the same thing I did last Friday & Saturday night 1 building over. No big deal but it was good to finally have beaten it. And now I can say Ive done both towers. Also I actually walked along the ledge this time instead of scooting on my ass an inch at a time lolololol.

After that I figured I could try a few fire escapes Ive been scouting or the boat. No brainer right? So I get back to the boat and no one is around. Yes! This is almost too easy why has no one done this before? I set up my camera on the timer and run back and forth for a few shots. After that I get a bit more bold and go further in and higher up. I take a few shots on the staircase. Ok everything is going perfect Im completely not worried about getting caught and Im going to get so many cool pictures of myself to show off. I pack everything up and decide Im just going to walk around for a while and take it all in.

I decide Ill go on the top level on the side not facing the shore. I should be out of sight here and should be able to chill for a while. Literally right when Im thinking that out of nowhere comes WEWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWE!!!! Oh shit I set off a motion detector! A motion detector on a boat wtf? My heart dropped and I got off that boat faster than the first Titanic survivor. That alarm was so loud Im sure everyone within a few blocks heard it. LOL I was honestly off there in under 5 seconds. As Im crossing the street and trying not to obviously sprint away I see now all the traffic lights are flashing red. Wtf is this? It wasnt doing that 5 minuets ago. The alarm is set up to the traffic lights?

I make a pretty decent get away walking fast as I can without running. I decide since this is the first alarm I set off that Id wait and see what happens. I got to a good vantage point right across the street up 1 level. Im sitting there on the edge of an overpass watching some guy walking around the deck of the boat looking everywhere. Out of nowhere a cop materializes right under me and points right at me and gets on his radio. At that point I then disappeared into the city and am now sharing with you guys. All in all it was a really fun night!

Some traffic lights "turn off" at night to flash yellow for major streets, and red for minor junctions/streets to allow any traffic to pass and not have to wait forever for lights to change.

* * *

Good trip you have there, I would recommend obscuring your face or refrain from posting any photos with you in them on public boards.

yeah the lights were normal right before this happening. it seems weird an alarm being connected to traffic lights but idk.

im really an explorer/photographer and not the other way around so when i take the photos i really like to be in them kind of marking me there if that makes sense?

serious question though - will i get in trouble for posting on here? the way i see it is yes im breaking the law but im not stealing or vandalizing so i feel like really im not doing anything wrong. like honestly is there an internet trespassing task force? not being sarcastic at all either id really like to know.

I have never heard of traffic lights be connected to anything other than a DOT VPN or in-road sensors and cameras, and at busy intersections at best.

Not sure what you are referring to here, but,

that is debatable. A quick click on the button and a form post later reveals numerous threads and speculations of private security firms frequently scanning sites like these and making case studies. Trespassing is still a law, and just like any other law that you break, you would not scream and shout that you just broke it, especially on the Internet, would you?

There is something that's called "Statute of Limitations", and some people stick to that.

And finally, some people just post photos (not necessarily with themselves included), and never go into details publicly what happened, when, and where.

face has since been obscured. itll take a few to take effect.

would i post a picture of me jaywalking online? yes
would i post a pic of me ripping off a mattress tag? probably
etc etc.

basically what im saying is to me trespassing is a non issue. esp if they dont catch me there on the scene i feel like what are they going to do? track me down all csi style and swat bust down my door? for what a misdemeanor trespass? ive lived on the other side of the law most of my life and i guess im just not worried about the small things like that.

We've had the chance to think about this recently.

In terms of posting on the Internet...

The fact is, most big-city police departments couldn't be bothered with this stuff. They have much bigger fish to fry, esp. when there is no theft or vandalism involved. OTOH, small-town police departments (esp. in consideration of the fact that small towns tend to be more conservative) might have not much to do, and may view this over-seriously and see it as something they want nipped-in-the-bud. It's the "gateway" to criminality, they might think.

But the thing is, the police is not out there looking at the Internet for trespassing. How would they know whether a person is there legit-or-not from a picture? It could be the owner's son. And he could be bullshitting to make himself hard amongst his friends. So it's the property owners/managers/whoever-is-responsible-for-the-place (OMW). And they would bring the complaint to the police to pursue/investigate. And the police would ask "what evidence do you have that this is happening?"

Do remember that the police, esp. busy departments, don't like to waste their time on something that they can foresee is a plain fail. The police is not the entity that prosecutes you, but their job is to gather a case that they present to a district attorney (DA). If the police brings a shit-acular case to the DA, the DA is gonna furrow his brow and say, "why U wastin' my time, bro?" So the police, being that they are not terribly enthusiastic about pursuing these petty crimes in the first place, won't bother unless 1) the complainant brings a pretty complete case, 2) is able to bring lots of pressure on the department to do something, and/or 3) is totally bored.

When you post something that 1) tells a story about your trespass, 2) shows a picture documenting your trespass, and 3) setting off an alarm to allow the OMW to be able to document exactly when a trespass occurred... This is probably a good case for the police to take up should the OMW find your post and file a complaint. Why? If there is just a picture of you trespassing and nothing to indicate when this might have occurred, they may not be able to easily determine if this is within the statute of limitations. This may have happened years ago. But a lot of people aren't very careful and they leave their EXIF info intact in these photos. Even though the EXIF is easy to alter and therefore one instance by itself wouldn't hold much weight in court... just seeing it within the statute of limitations would encourage the police to talk to a judge for a search warrant. If all the files of the given pic they find on your computers have this same EXIF, they know it will be pretty easy to convince a jury that it is likely that the EXIF date is correct. ("We found 20 instances of the full-res photo on the defendant's computer with so-and-so date putting it within the statute of limitations, and 2 instances in down-sized photos, in which the dates are older and out of the statute of limitations." I think it's pretty obvious which the jury will believe is the original.) Then you have the alarm that the OMW was alerted by, which reinforces the date of the trespass. Can you argue that the motion detector was liable to be set-off by animals (cats?) Yes, but with your story of trespassing and photos of trespassing, a jury is more liable to discount your I'm-just-bullshitting-for-the-Internet-and-it-was-really-only-a-cat theory.

So realize that none of this has actually gone before a jury yet. This is all going on in the mind of the police investigator as to whether this is a case he wants to pursue of not. He doesn't want to waste his time, because his professional reputation is largely based on how many (and what nature) successful cases he can bring to the DA. Some police will be enthusiastic. It might be a small town with nothing much happening, and a conservative bent that over-reacts. Even if they don't have a solid case, they might grab you and give you the scared-straight treatment to effect their questionable end. But most police will not be all that enthusiastic. They are usually overworked, and thinking about bigger problems, like assaults, domestic violence, drug dealers, etc. And all cases these days require a lot of paperwork. Nobody likes paperwork. They will themselves present a bigger hurdle to the OMW filing the complaint (asking for a really solid case w/evidence) simply because in all actuality, they don't want to deal with it.

But suppose you post all that and make it an easy slam-dunk case. The OMW meets the investigator's demands, and he has little choice but to go forward with it. Besides, the OMW (and you, by posting all that stuff together) has already done most of the investigator's work.

But what if you're careful, and post things that don't add up to a solid case? Well, then it depends on who the OMW is, and how much pressure they can bring upon the police. If it was the mayor's boat you were on, then they will have the police dedicate a guy to pursue all the search warrants and subpoenas necessary till they have a case against you. And other people with ties to gov't and police can exert similar pressure as well.

Take for example, the case of Scott H., one of our local urbex legends. He is really careful and experienced. At this point, he literally only posts of his explores 3 years from when it was done, if even posts at all. He was one of the guys who first explored the Suisan bay reserve fleet, which is a collection of old Navy warships mothballed and basically rotting away and waiting for dismantlement (see http://goo.gl/maps/eAmyw ). He waited 3 years to post his story, past California's statute of limitations. Guess what? The Navy pressured the FBI to investigate the guy's life for anything they can do against him, because they REALLY had a problem with this. Did this amount to anything? Probably not, but what if? And do you really want the trouble?

So it comes down to:

1) Dotting your i's and crossing your t's to make as little of a workable case for OMWs and investigators as possible. Make it not worth their trouble. Don't make it easy. In our area, one of the things that we do (for this and other reasons) is that we never name the place. We give it some sort of euphemistic name that fellow explorers might be able to decipher. But the point is that nobody will be able to find just by Googling. Most of the world does not know about UER. They don't think, "oh, somebody with cameras was just trespassing in my old mill, so let's check UER." They don't know about UER. But they might Google for their mill's name to see if this idiot shared and bragged with photos. This is why you make the name unsearchable.

2) And sometimes, it's better off to simply not post. It might sometimes be so hot that you should show the photos and tell the story only to your trusted friends, or fellow urbexers who you are sure not going to rat you out.

Just my thoughts.

You would have to have a really bored police department or have gone somewhere that is a big no-no to ever be concerned with covering your face. I think its silly to be so concerned with covering your face, for what is a misdemeanor almost every where.

Showing your face means nothing. I have an unusually hilarious face, so I pimp it around constantly. I think everyone here knows what I look like. No authority figure on Earth is motivated enough to scoure the internet for explorers, so fuck it. Everyone who knows me knows I do this anyway, I've never been anything but supported about it.

It oftentimes surprises me how okay this is.

I enjoyed reading your story and the pictures are a nice compliment, I wish more people would post friendly threads like this instead of trying to "go for gold" and show off their amazing prints in the name of gloating a location hoarding. You sound like you'd be a cool guy to explore with, have you tried posting in your regions boards to meetup with locals? Trust me, its much better going out with a few buddies than on your own.

Who would think that UE would lead to personal growth and confidence building? I have found myself in a similar situation when faced with various challenging situations underground. Places I wouldn't consider previously are now "no big deal". Congratulations on your recent outings! I suspect that your confidence will spill over into the rest of your life as well. Funny that sometimes what holds us back from success is our own fears.

Ditto on the first photo! I really like it.

I'm glad for you that you're not afraid to die anymore (I am, despite practicing to free my mind for the past seven years). However, it doesn't mean that you can't take care (if for no other reason than taking precautions to keep yourself safe for increases your chances of having more opportunities and time to experience the exhilaration you feel right now.

Yep, boats have security, especially the commercial one. But you figured that out on your own. I once tripped just your average alarm. The house was definitely abandoned and I knew the neighbor personally. I decided to walk in but then, 'beep beep' it was that little beep you get before you put in the code, but I had no code. I just turned around and walked down a few streets looking normal. I don't know if the walking it off would work after you've already ran, or after it's already full blast wailing.
