I will say that a female can have some unique advantages in many "guy" hobbies

True. In fact, Ninjalicious raises the point in Access All Areas that a lone woman or a mixed gender group hanging around an abandoned building often appears much less suspicious and threatening than a lone man or a group of men. No doubt plenty of explorers utilize this social perception to their advantage.

I know a lot of women who are interested in exploring, but safety concerns can stop them from actually doing much. I always take at least one guy with me - better safe then sorry

Females are less likely to do something that can cause death in general.
There are less females among rally drivers, surfers, paragliders, kayakers, too.
If females realize they only live once, they will probably choose somewhat dangerous-adventurous hobbies. Or at least will make bunch of tattoos and stuff like that.

As everyone has stated there are a ton of women who enjoy it. I just think later on in life a lot of them drop out because they have to focus on other things (career/family/kids/etc). There's also that sense of not wanting people to treat them differently because they're women as a ton of people hide their gender. So really, unless you're out meeting other explorers, you wouldn't know anyway.

^^^ This. Sorry officer we got lost and stumbled into this area works a lot better with 1-2 girls (from personal experience). Once you add a guy(guys) and a backpack they're already thinking about the fine you're about to get.

Know quite a few women who do it have explored with them. Not sure about the American scene in this respect but there are no shortage in Europe.

You'd be surprised--I've gone to a few meetups in my area and there's a pretty decent number of girls that do this kind of stuff. It wouldn't surprise me hugely if this is still a male-dominated hobby simply due to the nature of it, but the number of girls in UE is higher than you'd expect them to be.

I will only add that some of the best photography on UER is posted by the ladies. Few if any sideways oriented blurred out cell phone pics of crumby graffiti either.

I think that females are well represented in the UE community. It seems less so in the mine exploring community, although there are a number of well known women explorers.

I'm glad to say that I've always been warmly welcomed by every explorer that I've met. Like any other explorer, once I've shown myself to be competent I just become part of the exploring crew. This probably isn't everyone's experience, but it has been mine.

I think female explorers are more rare to find because it's not really safe depending on the area you're exploring, but really finding people who are into it isn't all that easy either it seems. Their loss though!

We're out there.
I think the ratio is actually pretty equal, maybe leaning towards men slightly. The only reason I can really think of is safety. There tends to be significantly more danger to the average woman in a confrontation than a man should things go awry, especially when you don't have a weapon for defense on you. A lot of my other female friends are deterred by that, particularly because in Canada weapons generally aren't carried and it'd look suspicious as hell to bring a gun or something out to an abandoned spot.

Males tend to be more adventurous, stronger and greater risk takers; some of the biological attributes of elevated testosterone levels.
However curiosity is a large part of what drives urban explorers in my opinion.

Anywhere you think you will need a weapon is a place not worth the risk and should be avoided regardless of gender.
With an attacker 10-20 feet away you may not even have time to pull a weapon.
Best to spot potential trouble asap, avoid contact and preferably detection.
People are trouble.

As other people have said, there are many of us out there.
The only problem is, as a female, I'm scared to go by myself so I only get to explore when I rarely find someone that I can drag with me.
I imagine that other girls have similar problems, so maybe that is why you see less

Small steps at a time.
Anyone who never feels fear is a fool.
Fear is your friend, listen to it but temper it with sound reasoning and judgement.
If something seems like a bad idea, it probably is.
Learn and respect your limits.

Never be afraid to bug out if the situation appears to be going above the level you're capable of handling saftly.
I stopped a climb a couple years ago because of a sketchy 5 foot section of a ladder half way up; no regrets. Every time I climb I feel fear to some degree and make sure I don't screw up. First time I free climbed over 20 feet I was 6 yo and it was the same then as it is now over half a century later.

Never think that anyone can save you from yourself.
You have to make yourself fully accountable for your actions be it alone or with a group.
Make no mistake, falls and structural collapse are the biggest risks you face.
Exploring solo teaches you self reliance, forces you to think and act soundly.
It is a valuable skill worth learning.

It's your big brain that makes you formidable ... if you use it.
