Hi fellow explores! My name is Lauren and I'm a 20 year old female collage student. I'm currently living in Lubbock majoring in English at Texas Tech University. My minor is creative writing and my concentration is in secondary education. One day, I am hoping to teach English in Japan. My interests include anime, music, Comicons, urban exploration, video games, reading, movies, television shows, and Japanese and Asian festivals.

My experience with urban exploration has been very limited. I have only visited one site. For several years now, I have watched popular urban explorers such as ExploringwithJosh, TheProperPeople, and Dark Exploration Films on Youtube. However, recently I have wanted to explore these places myself. Even though I have barely any experience, I am hoping to explore and document what I find in these places.

One of the reasons why I haven't explored much, is because as a female I'm a lot more aware of my surroundings. And with some of these buildings these places are in, their locations are not in the best of areas. That's why I wanted to talk with fellow female urban explorers and see what your experiences with urban exploration were. Keep in mind that most of the time, I will be exploring alone. I had a few questions that I wanted to ask. My questions were as follows:

1. Is it wise to explore alone?

2. When do you know when an area is safe to explore or when it is better to just not explore the location?

3. Should I carry a pocket knife or another weapon in case I ever had to defend myself?

4. As an explorer what should I bring with me?

1.) No, generally speaking it's safer to take a friend. That being said many on here (including myself) regularly run solo for a variety of reasons and have never gotten hurt but that doesn't make it safer than bringing a friend.

2.) That's a broad question right there and a lot of it comes down to trusting your subconscious. You'll eventually get comfortable enough in abandoned buildings that you'll be able to tell true warning bells from adrenaline jitters, but there are also specific things to look for. This can include; signs of human activity such as disturbed dust, footprints, signs of habitation, and strange noises; signs of structural instability, which have entire threads dedicated to them on here; signs of security, such as the area being "too clean," strange wires, beeping noises/blinking lights; and other more esoteric dangers in certain locations such as bad air underground.

3.) No. Getting caught carrying any kind of weapon escalates ticket- worthy offenses into felonies, and claiming it's a tool isn't much better because now it's a burglary tool- also a felony. If you absolutely must, carry pepper spray but don't rely on it for a sense of security. Your best bet is to stay on your guard and see a conflict coming far enough ahead to avoid it.

4.) Flashlight and camera, and it can even just be your phone camera. You'll see lots of posts about complicated gear bags and heavy duty equipment loadouts, and that can definitely help you step up your game- but when you're first learning all you need is a flashlight and a camera.

Set aside what you learned from those YouTubers.

Also, consider Korea instead of Japan. This country is a lot more of a frontier, exploring-wise: Too much to see, not enough explorers to see it, and the cops are pushovers.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I might consider pepper spray. I guess I'll just have to rely on my instincts and be on my guard. I have always wanted to visit South Korea. I saw in South Korea that their were a lot of locations on the DB map.

I think it's fallen out of vogue to use "female" to describe "women" but, anyway, this is an old thread so I'll let it slide. I came here because I was like "ooh a place for femme folx to connect on urbex!" and OF COURSE it started as a dude being like "yo where all the hot chix at?" (extreme paraphrase) but anyway, hi, hot chick here. What's a gal gotta do to get a full membership around here? *batts eyelashes* </sarcasm> Okay... lol... I'll see myself out.

"Female" is supposed to be used as an adjective, not a noun. "Female urban explorers" is fine, and "women urban explorers" implies "urban explorers who explore women."

But yeah of course it started as a "yo where all the hot chix at?"
