structure camping

i just spent my first night sleeping under the stars from atop a movie theater/shopping center. i brought up a foam pad and blanket along with my regularly packed diversions (ie. laptop, books, music, sketch pad) and had a rather nice night... after i got over the fact that someone had broke the tent i pitched there a few nights prior. i placed it there well out of any ground level pov as a test. looking back, i suppose it was naive, but now i know that spot is being enjoyed by others who sport more malicious tendencies than i.

i intend on camping out atop other large structures over the next few weeks as an experiment (i suppose i'll be hiding my next tent). i dont mean the whole campfire/cooler/lawn-chair deal. what i'm talking about is just a place to crash. and the sublime feeling that hit me with the afternoon sun when i awoke testifies that i'm off to a good start.

anyone else tried this? i could use your previous experiences with what i'll call 'structure camping'.

Sounds like fun.

i've slept out on the roof of my theatre several times, it's quite fun. a word of caution, however: sleep in a tent during the wintertime, or you'll wake up to find pigeons roosting on you. it was funny in a creepy, oh-my-god-get-it-the-hell-off-me sorta way. also, make sure you're alert before you try to climb back down, descending a ladder and then 60 vertical feet of spiral staircase at 6:30 in the morning is not as fun as it would seem.

but the sunrise- totally worth it.

oh yeah, if it's a flat roof, make sure you're not in a depression, and sleep well away from lightning rods. better yet, check the weather first to avoid storms. my roof had a four-foot edge around it, so wind wasn't really an issue for me,but on some taller buildings, (Esp with tents) that could be a problem too.

EDIT: afterthoughts

Done this at a couple of very remote mines. Slept in a tunnel once, and slept on the roof of the powder house on another. Very cool way to wake up.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Very interesting- I like the concept and the name you have given it. I don't think the homeless came up for a name for this routine activity. Sounds like mucho fun.

There's nothing around here tall enough where you could get away with it..
I guess I could crawl up into a boxcar like a hobo...

I've camped at three Death Valley sites myself. It is a very unique camping experience to wake up among abandoned cabins and mining structures.

I camped out in Lyric Theatre and had a blast! I just slept on a rug that was there in my sleeping bag. It was cold on the concrete floor but I had a blast.

I vote the next sleep over is on the roof of the Federal building.

And neither of you mention how goddamn cold it was in the Lyric!? Bleh, was better than the times I slept at Hearn or Inglis (Massey Ferguson?) I guess...

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

I'm still pissed at myself for not sleeping in a boxcar. It was either that or the Chevy Tahoe stuck in the Connecticut River. So we tied the truck off to a tree and slept there. Figured it was safer than the boxcar in the thunderstorm.

nothing like camping out in a building, then waking up in the middle of the night, complete darkness, feeling like the hobo fire is suffocating you. good times.

Never done it, but I've definetly had the urge. Wouldn't do it alone (mostly so I could make someone else carry the tent), and wouldn't do it anywhere terribly popular (don't want to be robbed in the middle of the night by the locals!), but I've definetly considered it. Camping in/on a nice tall downtown building sounds like a blast.

friggin' racists messing up my generalizations, also stealing my jobs, women.

RIP, Ninj.
