I spent a night on the roof of the VetMed building on campus a few weeks ago. It was fun for a while, then I couldn't fall asleep because the fans were too loud.

Cryptic: I'd like to say that you're quite possibly living my dream. Something about the absolute freedom of being able to wander where you want, when you want, and be without worldly possessions to worry about is quite appealing. I've always wondered about just getting up one day, getting a job, and then packing and leaving . Kudos to you brother - you are one of the few who are truly alive.

Winter would be my problem. Way too cold for my liking.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

thank you for the encouragement. not having a lot of stuff is liberating, but it's not exactly a care free life up there. eventually i must go back down. and, as i will explain, there's always the chance of getting bothered.

[snapped this pic just minutes before the trouble started]

as of this morning, i can no longer structure camp the university- home to most of my rooftops. i've been 'escorted' off site by air conditioning repairmen, faculty, ect. but this morning i had the pleasure of chatting with a cop on my rooftop. and he wasn't inclined to tell me "hey alright be careful". it was more like this:

cop- what are you doing up here?
me- camping.
you wanted for anything?
no.
got any id?
no.
what's your name?
*gives a false name*

he called in the name and gave me another chance to fess up to anything. i packed up my tent and jovially mentioned how nothing fits back into the box the right way after it's unpacked. he laughed a little, thus officially breaking the ice. in truth and unseen to him, i had a bit of trouble breaking down my tent because my hands were shaky... this wasn't a pleasant way to wake up, and besides, i was lying... a lot. i had given false information, and all he had to do was search my bag to find my id. my real name has some trifling warrant attached to it (outstanding court case), but the check came back as something innocuous, probably because there was no record to match the name i gave. i justified this by saying i wasn't a nc resident. the cop and i started down the building. the morning sun was just licking the raleigh skyline 4 miles away as we began descending a ladder that led to a lower rooftop.

me- you have to admit, it's a nice view from here.
cop- it could be.
if i wasn't trespassing?
right.

this is exactly the type of mindset i want to break down. call me fringe, but beauty should be seen as beauty. this morning's skyline was breathtaking, but to him it was simply a forbidden pov. this short dialogue raises the question, what else am i missing? what other perceptions are guarded that would enrich my experience of what little beauty remains in life?

i'll try to get some better photos.

he follows me down the ladder and asks "you ain't going to run are ya?". if i didn't have every worldly possession i own on my back, i may have considered it. we met another cop on the lower rooftop. from there we entered a ventilation maintenance door, walked into a hall, down some stairs, into a (rather plush) lobby, and out to the squad cars. they searched my stuff, but thank God he missed my id. to shorten this up, i got off with a written 'trespassing warning' that basically says if i am caught anywhere on campus ever again, i go strait to jail. not a bad day, until i got the "you seem like a smart kid get your shit together i used to be a delinquent like you" speech.

damn i hate it when the say that.

I've had state cops that could have verbally warn me I was trespassing, but didn't. It wasn't that they forgot too; they didn't feel there was necessary because of how I conducted myself. So I could go back there again. The cop even went as far as to tell to leave a note so they know my car's not disabled. Sweet.

Is there a point to not showing ID? I don't have problems with cops, or federal agents for that matter because I don't jack them around, for one thing. There's no point to intentionally pissing off cops, etc. unless you enjoy hard living. By wasting the cop's time you put others at risk, and make them wait.

Some guys and I are planning on doing a paranormal investigation and then sleeping thereafter, leaving in the morning.

The place is a little gross, and I'm not sure if a tent is taking it 'too far' or not. Is a sleeping bag fine? or even just a blanket?

Andrew, that picture is a good idea. If you're gonna be sleepin in style, you might as well eat a steak while you're at it.

i hear ya. i don't know what i'll do just yet, but i have all summer to figure something out. i have faith in necessity and that i'll find a system to keep going.

yes there is. it's called having an arrest warrant. i mentioned this. in other words, i say "HI i'm ______, how are you?" they say "fine, thank you. come with us".

if it matters any, i'm not an asshole with cops. i just don't see them as men or women, but rather extensions of a system i am currently quitting.

woah, back up. blackhawk, i respect you over a lot of people on these forums for what you have to say and enjoy reading your posts, but this is a bit condescending. saying i put others at risk in my actions is overboard. trust me, i don't enjoy a single second spent with police and wish them to be doing other things (ANYTHING) rather than dealing with me.

If you prefer subhuman treatment then by all means feel free to think of them as faceless gears in the machine. There's no point to breaking a good man's face. It's even more foolish when your shit is weak. Yes, it's true, there are cops, etc. who are good people, and will treat you well. If you give them a hard way to go, they will return the favor.

Weak shit; learn to recognise to warning signs. Take prompt action if you find yourself afflicted with this life-threatening condition. Antidote; large quantities of humble pie, eat it humbly, and chew well.

Depends on what? The hurt locker doesn't have a bottom, it's doorway is wide, and always open. It don't care how old, young, or dumb you are. Like I've said before, I learned from the pros.

As for lightning you may have more to learn than you have imagined, no offense intended. It baffles the experts at times, and is as yet not fully understood by anyone. Tesla was completely fascinated by it.

Your heart is at risk of fibrillation at currents greater than 16 milliamperes passing through it. That's such a teeny-weeny amount. If this happens you will most likey die. Lightning can induce this without contact at a disconcerting distance.

Look up "mega lightning", the plane killer.

bh- One Q at a time, please.
me- i wasn't asking any Q's.

bh- they can lock you up till your IDed. Right?
me- i give them no reason to take me in, because unlike you, real cops have better things to do than waste my time.

bh- They can find ways to make life unpleasant, right then, and maybe some for a little latter.
me- police don't make life unpleasant. life is unpleasant when i go to a place with hopes of learning from others and instead having to deal with you.

bh- More charges if possible, maybe a psych eval.
me- why are you so caustic? what does this accomplish?

bh- If you prefer subhuman treatment then by all means feel free to think of them as faceless gears in the machine.
me- am i the only one here that finds subhuman treatment slightly out of style? especially for a belief? i don't want to be treated at all by cops, judges, mailmen, or the guy reading a newspaper beside me. i want to be left alone. why the fuck do you think i live on a damn rooftop? that's right, you think i need a 'psych eval'. i came to this forum to learn, not hear words i could pick up in casual conversation with the the guy reading a newspaper beside me.

bh- There's no point to breaking a good man's face.
me- what do you mean?

bh- It's even more foolish when your shit is weak.
me- that is to say you think structure camping is 'weak shit'? instead of blurting childish retorts, make this worth my time. what is 'weak' about ditching a life you don't agree with and trying to find something new?

bh- Yes, it's true, there are cops, etc. who are good people, and will treat you well. If you give them a hard way to go, they will return the favor.
me- since you brought it up... i think since a cop acts with power of the state, it's not the cop who detains, but rather the state acting thru the cop. officer joe is doing his job. joe is the guy who goes back to his family when the day is done. that's all.

again, what's with the "weak shit"? am i coming off as arrogant or an anarchist hippy deadbeat? i'm here to learn and am grateful for those who respect that.

bh- As for lightning you may have more to learn than you have imagined, no offense intended.
me- none taken, you sarcastic prick. why would i have to learn more about lightning after your enlightening pontification. is there a quiz after you've wasted my time? i do what i do. why do you care if i fry on some rooftop? the headlines will read "kid dies on rooftop in lightning storm" and no one will give a shit. it won't mar the name of ue and you can go about living life in peace and harmony, taking the respite to harass a "basic member" on this forum who wants to try something different.
