I know I started the thread, but I'm hoping someone can take the lead in at very least, the location. Vast majority of the band in my area are houses. Judging by the limited comments I get on the house posts, they aren't very popular. I do know of a couple industrial Milwaukee locations, but have not nutted up and hit them as of yet. I can't call milwaukee myself, as I'd hate to hit a place only to find it sealed tight. If by chance someone can put together interesting locations close to milwaukee, if be glad to offer my house up to meet. 4 empty bedrooms and 2 couches. I also still offer free camping in Iola. If bandos is don't work in either of those 2 locations, I will happily drag the camper to a location and offer beds up. Please help me organize this.... Lets make it happen!!!!

I'm interested in Milwaukee. There is plenty of stuff to do in Milwaukee proper.. I cant take the lead on planning anything. But I'd join in if this was ever setup!

I'll put Madison's hat in the ring. I know for sure of at least two locations that are certainly abandoned and accessible, well as one storm drain that I've seen for myself, and two others that someone reliable told me were accessible. I can confirm the accessibility of one steam tunnel network, though it is heavily alarmed and the average police response time for said tunnels is under five minutes.

I also have leads on:

  • one more storm drain
  • Two abandoned buildings that may or may not be abandoned by the time this meetup happens
  • One abandoned building that may or may not be accessible.
  • One massive industrial location that is semi-abandoned, but neither I nor any other explorer I've talked to has found a way into yet- though we do have some ideas.
  • Several construction cranes and a few rooftops, though the cranes are, of course, temporary.
  • The streets and foundations of a neighborhood that was abandoned partway through construction and was reclaimed by the forest
  • Several collapsed barns and farms surrounding the city.

There's enough here for at least half a day's worth of exploring, maybe even a full day (much more if that massive industrial complex pans out). I can easily rent a campfire pit right by the lake so we could have a cookout/campfire if the weather is nice- though the park does not allow overnight camping, and there's not enough room for guests in my single-room apartment, so people would have to find their own lodging and food.

But still, we could meet in Madison for lunch, go see a few abandonments and call it a day- or do much more, if the larger drains and industrial complex pan out (though it's not a guarantee). We could also make it a weekend-long, multi-city thing: start in Madison one day, drive about 1.5 hours to Milwaukee or Rockford and see more stuff there the next day, maybe stop at other places along the way (like the GM plant in Janesville, if it's still standing).

Curious what you know of in MKE proper. I haven't found much. There are some awesome looking grain silos that I know for certain are long retired, but I have not hit them yet. Literally everything else, sans the drains, on the DB is long gone or repurposed. Space is at a premium here, and bandos don't last very long.

I do know of a dozen houses within an hour of here. I enjoy them, but most others seem bored with them. Houses in the city itself are in shit neighborhoods, and I've little interest in risking a confrontation for just a house.

This is exactly the sort of thing I was requesting. Thanks a TON for your time Aran! I am thinking we could the "both" thing. As in a pre-dawn start in MadTown, then a late afternoon departure to a 2nd location for perhaps camping. Overnight explores from the camp site, and/or pre-dawn....

Posted by relux
I'm interested in Milwaukee.

If relux can put together a similar MKE location list, I can check on current status of each, and we could call that our 2nd location. I again offer my place up to meet, shack, drink, whatever. Fireplace on the patio. 2 couches, 4 empty bedrooms, one with a queen, one with a twin, the other 2 literally empty. Bring your own bedding in case you are stuck with the floor of an empty room. If this turns into a blowout, I can also open up the camper in the driveway.

This is a perfect start! All we need now is a date, then we can post up on the event planner to finalize the deets on explore locations and accommodations. I can do weekends of: 9/29, 10/13, 11/10 or 24, 12/8. We know anything in Oct and later can be unpredictable. Oct-Dec could be 70's, or <>0 with 18" of snow. I personally am not afraid of weather. I have tent camped below 0 in a blizzard before, and regularly winter camp.

So - 2 semi-solid locations, with potential accommodations, a wide range of dates. If those seriously interested would throw some dates out, we can advance this to the event planner.

So stoked!!!!

9/29, 10/27, 11/10, and 12/8 work for me. How do people feel about 9/29? A month away is probably long enough for people who work weekends to ask off work, and the weather will still be nice by then- plus, it gives enough time for the flooding here in Madison to be long gone.

If Mr Bitey handles things on the Milwaukee end, I can handle things on the Madison end if 9/29 works for everyone else.

I'll 2nd the weekend of 9/29. A couple more thumbs up on that weekend we will ink it on the calendar, and move on to planning details in the event planner per JennyUE's suggestion.

What say you, groupexies? Is you is, or is you isn't????

When this turns into an actual event, you should make the event on here. The event system on UER messages everyone who lives within a certain radius. And then post in here for others that live outside that radius, in case they are willing to travel. I'd be interested in meeting explorers of this area. Keep us all updated on plans, please!

Yep. That's what I did with Clocktoberfest.

I'm on a trip until 10/2, so if it could fall on a weekend in October that would be amazing.

Let me know if you guys put together something. I'm by the Dells now instead of Minneapolis but there really isn't a load of UE to do around here. Some slot canyons and old railroad tunnels. I know of one abandoned railroad tunnel that's 1/4 mile longish that's been sealed up for ages that would require science, and others on the 400 and Hustler trails that are long but public access. There are some large mines but I haven't been to them in ages.
@Clockwork does Slim Jim still come on here? I almost never get on here anymore myself. Isn't his cave project in WI? Sounds like an opportunity to recruit some new people to his project.

This whole plan kinda fell apart. I was hopeful I could nudge someone into taking the lead, but it never really happened. I just don't have the time to organize an event. I would jump right on board if someone put a plan together for us...

I would be very interested to hear of tunnels other than Elroy-Sparta or The 400. I would be thrilled to be involved in any caving or mine explores. I don't know any caves that aren't already public, and the only underground mine I know of (besides way up by Lake Superior and in the UP) is the mine UW holds that the 3 boys were lost in in a couple years back. I am sure that is more than sealed up tight now....

Still down for a Groupex. Be glad to share my camper, MKE home, or land in Iola. Just need someone to take the reigns and say "this is the weekend, meet here, stay here, and here is what we will explore"....

Jim comes on here once in a while. His digging projects are his absolute focus these days (apart from the other times when he's still driving all over creation looking for new caves and tunnel leads). Jim is absolutely obsessed with finding more subterranean spaces, and gets no rest or sleep because of it. He is always looking for more help for his legacy digging project. But it's not up to me to invite new recruits to his property. Have you been out there, GreyKat? It's quite the wonderland out in rural Wisconsin.

My plan hasn't fallen apart, though I don't particularly need UER to promote it the way I used to. It's available in the events section anyways though:
