| | Which is more fun? < on 5/10/2007 11:16 PM >
| | | I've been thinking about UE lately, and I've been wondering to myself which method of finding locations is the most fun. Of course one way of finding spots to go is through the internet, and it's easy to find plenty of locales to visit in any given area. But I found that just walking around your home town can be a lot of fun too. The other weekend I walked around the city of Webster Groves, and I found a full load of stuff. Including a building I want to go back and explore later. So I was just wondering what do you guys find more fun? Do you enjoy exploring the information super highway and looking for locations that way? Or do you enjoy more going out and finding them on your own? I've found that both ways are quite entertaining.

| | | i think its so much more fun to find things for yourself, just by walking around or driving and looking for stuff to explore. i think it really adds to the experience if you do all the research and reconnaisance yourself. more adventure if you ask me.

| | | I feel both ways are just as rewarding. Both methods always reveal things I wasn't looking for in the first place, but are worth every bit of the effort.

| | | I've only found like 3 locations I've visited online. It's much more rewarding to find something yourself. Like Tholcomb said though, I'll go home afterwards and try and find out more of the history about the location online.

| | | I like both. If I see a location someone has been to and the pics they took look incredible.....I'd still like to see it for myself. Also just running around doing errands gives me a great scouting opportunity for new locations.

| | | I love wandering around town, with a piece of paper and eyes. Like yesterday i found a neet little building being built near my local downtown. I think its way more fun to find something on yur own. I find the other way ish leaning too much towards "i found this, but yu can go here if yu want too". But thats just me. UE is UE, Weather yu have a map or not. -R.e.t

| | | If I see a place that might be worth exploring, but I don't have any gear with me, then I'll go home, check out the history of the place and go back the next day (or that weekend) to explore it.

| | | I've found many both ways. Driving around, i've found various locations which have proven to be excellent. It adds to the experience. There's no way of knowing what things like security and the structural integrity are like in such buildings. That's the whole excitement angle that i like. Additionally, it's great to find stuff online, too. I do like the whole idea of meeting new people and getting a bit of a mini preview of the place through other people's photos. And it can be more rewarding for people to look at your photos and say, "I've never looked at it like that before! Cool!"

| | | Agreed. Sometimes, I will see something online that will make me want to check something out. But there will also be times when I'm just tooling around and see something cool. Two weekends ago, I ended up staying in a hotel that was across the street from a cool abandoned train depot (alas, I didn't have my camera). Never heard anyone talk about it before (though it might be here and I just can't see it). Both can be just as rewarding. And I'm hoping to get back down that way soon. This train station was really neat.
I went back to Ohio, but my city was gone. There was no train station; there was no downtown. South Howard had disappeared; all my favorite places. My city had been pulled down; reduced to parking spaces. ~~~The Pretenders |

| | | I love scouting out locations, but it also feels good to do your homework (tracking down locations through internet documentation). What really pays off is actually getting in to the location you've found by either method! I'll never forget the feeling I got, for example, getting into my first location. It was unique, exciting... and I can't wait to do it again! ;)

| | | Well, I live about 14 minutes away from the closest town, and I have 3 or 4 different ways to get there, and once I got into UE, I started to notice the abandoned houses all over the place in the country. I'd just never noticed them before, never really thought about it as anything to be interested in...So now I like just picking a random country road and driving down. Odds are, you'll find an old house or two. ...Or five.
Won't you help me, Mr. Jesus, Won't you tell me, if you can When you see this world we live in, Do you still believe in man? |
