| | Respirator help possibly < on 2/28/2006 7:51 PM >
| | | I was just wondering if there is any site that has cheap respirators. Im pretty tight on cash right now. At my work we had the MSA Safety Works respirators with P100 filters and I really liked them. I was checking out online and they are like 30 to 40 bucks. I know that i dont want a crappy respirator but are they all that expensive?
Not a single fuck given... |

| | | Good ones aren't cheap. If your stirring up that much dust you better start worrying about what else you have on. If you don't wear a disposable jumpsuit sealed at the ankles/wrists/neck you'll be bringing it home with you. If you inhale at home it's still dangerous. It's best to avoid stirring up dust, rather than feeling safe with a respirator. You must be clean shaven for it to work, and it must fit correctly. I try to go on windless days, after rain so the sites are damp.

| | | Might not be a bad idea to check local colleges for used ones. I know a lot of autobody / paint / shop students sell if they decide to leave the program.

Paint filters are often not codified for use with mold and asbestos. If you go to your local hardware store's safety section it will likely have a respirator with p100 cans for less than thirty bucks. I recommend the AOS Safety brand, but MSA is also very nice (but more expensive). I haven't tried the 3M compact respirators, but those pink machines look pretty convenient and are half the price as can respirators. Shop around. MNiG

| | | You can get them cheap at any hardware store. Home Depot would probably be the best bet anyways like someone else said.

| | | I think I paid $32 for my AOS safety double can P100 respirator. Good quality, nice fit, comfortable. Menards.

| | | I get mine at pawn shops, and get new carts.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

| | | if you have a commercial account to a graingers supplier or anything of the like it is pretty cheap. the best prices i found were for North Safety Products, 12-22$ for a 1/2 mask w/o cans. i got the defender p100 with organic vapor cans for 18$/pr. I also got some really nice "disposable" p75 rated masks for 20$ for 10 masks....good for friends who come along every now and then

| | | If you're in the US, you can get a combo package of 3M half mask with a set of P100 for $20 shipped from a place called PK Safety. This is the combo they offer: http://store.pksafety.net/asledu.html I don't care so much for the bright pink look, but I don't know of a better deal.

Those are activated charcoal type organic filters and they're usually not rated for asbestos. [last edit 3/14/2006 9:51 PM by Deuterium - edited 1 times]

The places we like to go are only meant to be entered by authorized personnel, meaning it isn't designed to be safe for the general public. A building built before sometime in the 70s is almost certain to have asbestos material and some are damaged from preparation for demolition, vandalism etc. If you like to go UEing often, it is definitely a good idea to get an asbestos mask. Effect is not immediately. If there's an effect, it shows up in the form of lung cancer years later.

Do what feel right on a case-by-case basis. Don't run to Home Depot and grab a P100 or all up your doctor asking for a prognosis; it's a matter of being safer in certain situations--not something that you NEED. UE gear is overemphasized: Explore smart and travel light. MNiG

It's a common scare tactic. That and toxic mold, oh my. If there is heavy contamination, you'll need more than a respirator. Otherwise you will still expose yourself offsite, and expose friends/family members as well. cough. If your really worried about asbestos you ate, don't smoke/avoid second hand smoke. -I ain't scared of no stinky toxic mold-

| | | The danger in old farm houses is the possibility of animal feces lying about, which can be extremely dangerous if inhaled. A woman in Alberta died over the summer from inhaling mouse feces while doing some spring cleaning in an old family barn. [last edit 3/15/2006 5:39 PM by -MisfitStyle- - edited 1 times]
