| | | personne ne sait vraiment mais, il effectivement semble que l'ÉTS l'ait acheté. depuis plusieurs mois ils font des tests de sols et enlèvent l'amiante. à mon avis ça devrait être démoli, mais ce sera long comme opération.

| | | it looks as if they've started doing work on it - someone has gone through wiht a can of spray paint and identified the levels in the main part of the building. also, parts of it have been sealed up recently, including all access to the oldest part of the brewery and the loading dock area. like frigo said, demolition is going to be a long operation.

| | | The condo sign is not for the DOW building, it's simply an advertisement for the nearby Lowney loft project.

that's for the other building between the lowney and the dow - i think it's connected to the lowney, or they're building a connection. the lower floors are the project offices, and construction is supposed to be starting on the condos. i wonder how much the developers had to pay lowney to use its logo...

ETS is growing faster than it can accomodate student. It's an engineer factory and they need space for new locals. I don't know the statue of the Dow building but I don't think they can but the whole thing down because of the historical standing of the facade and for sure it is not possible to bring the whole thing down without seeing the orange asbestos abatement tarp appearing. If anybody do see some wall going down please tell me, tell us!

the day the dow actually comes down i'll be sitting in a lawn chair behind the planetarium, stubby in one hand and lowney caravan bar in the other, watching the demolition. anyone care to join me? i doubt that the whole facade has historical protection. either way, it would be really, really tricky, not to mention ridiculously expensive, to maintain the facade while making the building useable as living or teaching space. the layout/structure/levels of the building make it a developer's nightmare, so you can bet that whoever gets the contract to develop the place is going to fight any sort of imposed historical facadism. we'll have the dow as we know it for some time yet, but i really don't think that ten years down the line it'll still be standing.

I'd be tempted to join you, but to see that place come down would be heartbreaking for me. I guess I'm just a sentimental old fool, but this brewery was such a part of the city I grew up in, as it also was for my parents and grandparents. It would just be too strange to go down there and find the familiar sites missing, and not smell the almost overpowering odour of hops filling the air. That's the memory that still lingers....
"You're a catastrophe... On your watch we've lost almost all of our allies, the budget surplus, four airliners, two trade centers, a piece of the Pentagon and the city of New Orleans. Maybe your just not lucky. I'm not saying you don't love this country. I'm just wondering how much worse it could be if you were on the other side. Yes, God does speak to you. And he's saying: Take a hint." B. Maher |
