the day the dow actually comes down i'll be sitting in a lawn chair behind the planetarium, stubby in one hand and lowney caravan bar in the other, watching the demolition. anyone care to join me? [edit-spelling]
|
Yes. And I'll thank god that it's gone. That thing is just too much of an attention grabber; It's like the Jenk used to be, and the Malt plant is; UE is about going to NEW places. The Dow is like my bedroom now. I'm sometimes surprised by what's in it, and sure I don't know where my socks went, but It's not somewhere I want to spend all my time. The building will be only slightly missed when it goes down; I just hope that they replace it with something that is a little more in line with the "decent urban planning" policy that the city seems to be after lately.
Urban development is what happens when the planners are trying to figure out what to do. By the time they have it sorted, the development has already happened. |

| | | I'll kinda miss it too, but like Jumpman said, its getting booring to go there. I loved going there just for the tunnel, but now that its all sealed up, there's no point. It's a bit like Malting Plant, last time ive been there was more then a year ago and i don't miss it, well maybe going in the little white cabin on top pour en fumer un ptit. I hope they blow up the place (even if its not probable), that would be really fun to see. Id join you guys with my lawn chair and a good old dow beer in my hand on top of the planetarium.

| | | speaking of cherry blossoms, EVIL hershey after buying out lowneys closed the remaining lowneys plant (sherbrooke) and moved all production out of quebec to smiths falls. All this great lowneys chocolate isnt even made here in quebec anymore, they now want to close the YS licorice factory too

I think Cherry Blossoms are still being made in the Hershey plant on De Rouen Street in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.

| | | the capitalist in me says blow it up, the broken window theory of rudy guiliani applies, look at the nice job done with the old motor pool building and bottleing plant. The historian in me says creative re use, as in the above examples but anything but leaving it rot. I have spoken to real estate agents and the area of st henri around the malting plant property values are artificially depressed due to its presence. you tear down the malting plant and that area will be like the area around the atwater market

| | | The malt plant will have to go soon. I wouldn't be surprised if it is not there anymore by the end of the summer. It's some kind of magic rule, we loose one big spot every summer (jenkins last year, redpath 2 years ago, montreal locomotive works 3 years ago...)

| | | There comes a certain point when places become eyesores and in fact health hazards, plain and simple. Such was the case with Jenkins. Sorry if that upsets you but it's the sad truth.

I toured the smith falls plant like 8 years ago and they made cherry blossoms there back then too... The upside of my adventure to smith falls : you can go to the hershey store in the plant and buy cherry blossoms and other chocolate by the pound which is 10 times cheaper then by buying them individually.. and they give you a free chocolate bar with every purchase. The downside of my adventure to smith falls : There are no falls in smith falls.. just a canal.
