| | | When I was in college, I applied for a summer internship at the US Bureau of Mines office in Minneapolis (I was a Geology student). They were already in the process of shutting down, but I got a tour and got to hang out for a while. A bunch of years later, it was one of the blown-out local derps, but it was neat to be back. Since then it's been demolished. RIP BOM Some time after that, a friend bought the MS-40 Nike Base a little ways out of town. I'd never been there before, but it was clearly a place that had been explored a good deal. I helped clean and repair a lot of the base. (And because the city council are a bunch of obstructionist assholes, it's been abandoned again.) It might be long enough, now, that it would be interesting to go look around again...

| | | For me it's been both a positive and negative experience to be in places that I've been in when open. I got to go into my old middle school 14 years after I had finished 8th grade; it was a building built in the 40s and was being demolished for a new gym...that was pretty cool to see as an adult and get all the nostalgic feelings seeing everything again (plus, I hated it there as a kid so it felt like good revenge to see it being torn down..it was a death trap even when it was still being used!) On the other hand, I went down to NOLA about 2 months after Katrina with my family, and found my granddad's old house. He had moved out about 10 years prior, but the people who had lived there after him didn't get a chance to ever go back to the house to get their stuff. I don't know if they died or just left; all the furniture, food, clothes....everything you could see showed evidence of having floated up pretty high and then slowly settled back down to the floor once the water receded. The house had 6 feet of water during Katrina, and when we saw it, it just had 1 foot of caked mud on the ground. The kids room (where I used to stay as a kid too) still had their drawings, stuffed animals and school books out. It hurt pretty bad to see that place, I think about it often and wish I knew what happened to the family that lived there. The house has since been demolished. Long story short (my bad)...I always find it fascinating how we can all get strong emotions (good or bad) from our built environment
