The building is approximately one square city block. It is in the middle of a largely vacant area, visible from a long distance away. Although it was active as a mall until mid-2004, from the outside it appears to be a giant long-abandoned monolith. The western (larger) side of the building contains four floors and a basement full of abandoned businesses. The fourth floor features a 16-lane bowling alley. The fifth floor has been abandoned since meat-packing days and was used for storage. There is a small section of sixth floor, and many crawlways over the rest of the 5th floor. The southwest corner of the 5th floor is an abandoned dance club that may have never been open. The northeast quadrant of the building contains abandoned businesses on the 2nd-4th floors which include a 9-hole and 18-hole indoor mini-golf course. The 5th floor is abandoned since the meat-packing days. The southeast quadrant has no interior connections to the rest of the building. It contains old machinery and catwalks, and has been abandoned since meat-packing days. This area is only 3 stories high + basement. The basement of all sections of buildings is somewhat confusing and mazelike. There is a small derelict courtyard in the center of the building, open to the south but blocked by a tall barbed-wire fence. The roof is complex, made up of several different sections at different levels.

The walls of the mall corridors are decorated with metal pipes, bars, cooling circuits, tanks, and other relics from the building's history as a meat-packing plant. It is a very unusual sight. Each and every business is unique, and many contain things that were left behind due to the quick closing.

The building was constructed in 1918 as the Midland Packing Company. This was one of three large meat-packing plants located in the Union Stockyards. The plant was short-lived, however, and went bankrupt in 1920. In 1924, it re-opened as the Swift & Co. meat packing house. In 1949, a large explosion caused by a propane leak killed 21 employees and one trucker. Swift & Co. closed in 1975. Kermit D. and Vicky Lohry then acquired the building, and remodeled most of four floors and the basement into a unique, historic shopping mall. In the late 70s, K D Station had up to 60 businesses. These numbers dwindled to less than 20 in the late 90s, but business picked up again in the early 2000s. Things went well up until mid-June 2004, when tenants received eviction notices with no warning, giving them 2 weeks to move out. It was indicated that K D Station was closing, but no information was given as to why. The building was red-tagged by the city the night of June 30, 2004. A more recent article reveals that the city of Sioux City Inspection Services Division declared KD Station unsafe and unfit for occupancy in April, citing a severe roof leak and the owners' indication the building would not be maintained or improved. At one time, the building extended to the north in an area which is now a vacant lot. The current building is probably about 2/3 the size of the original plant.

Surprisingly, KD Station was demolished. It's very sad. This was, without a doubt, the greatest abandoned building I have ever been inside. It was fun to go camping there and the memories will last a life time. It's a shame KD Station did not.
