| | | Posted by KASTRAX So now that my school re-built the darkroom I was thinking of getting into film photography. I wanted to ask any veterans of the film era what their favorite camera was.
| I personally prefer to shoot Medium Format, but I guess the camera really depends on a number of factors. The type of photography you shoot can influence the camera you will use. There are some bigger, bulkier set ups like the RZ67 in Medium format, or some Large Format cameras that are best used on tripods. I love these cameras for exploring. Then you can have your 35mm ( I use a Canon nF1) that can be used on a tripod, but work well with faster ISO film when you are on the run, or are shooting street photography. On the other hand I also use a Rolleiflex (Medium format) for both types of photography. The darkroom setup of your school can have an influence as well. I assume it will allow you to develop 35mm film, but how about 120, 4x5 and beyond? I'm guessing the enlargers will have the same size carriers as whatever developing system you will use. These are some of the basic factors. My personal favorite cameras to use are: Mamiya RZ67 pro ii Rolleiflex 2.8 Horseman 45HF Canon nF1

| | | IMHO, the best camera is the one you can get your hands on. Sometimes, you find a dinged-up old beater at Goodwill and it could turn out to be your best friend. I found a Super 8 camera there once for $5 and it became more useful than the $10k camera I rented. Also, it's great to get a feel for different lenses before you purchase anything. Check out your local rental houses and experiment with different prime lenses (I like them best for INT exploration since they're better in low light): TORONTO AREA: SIM http://www.simdigital.com/Joe Sutherland http://joesutherland.com/rates/Henry's http://www.henrys.com/ ^ All still rent out SLR lenses, I believe. You can also check out https://www.lenslenders.ca/ if going to a brick-and-mortar store isn't your thing. Hope that helps!
