| | | A while ago, I posted some photos from a local paper mill in my area. Despite being in disrepair, the electricity in some parts is still functional, I soon discovered. I first passed through a set of doors labeled "Warning: High Voltage," but saw no indications that the electricity was on. However, as I crept deeper into the main building, I heard a low, buzzing hum. It wasn't too loud, but it was noticeable. I then tried to enter the highest floor of the mill, higher than even the catwalks. The only access was a narrow flight of metal stairs. As I climbed higher, the buzzing grew louder, until I was staring up the last set of stairs into the 'attic,' so to speak. At this point, I would've had to raise my voice to talk to anyone, had I not gone alone. I swiftly concluded that, seeing as this electrical equipment had been potentially exposed to water damage, and had not been maintained in over four years, that it was too dangerous to continue on- especially on a metal staircase. Descending the stairs, I got turned around in the dark, narrow corridors of the plant. I finally saw daylight, in the form of the door. The buzzing was still audible in the background, though the equipment was five stories above me. Looking out the door, I saw where it lead, and promptly turned around- it lead directly to the fenced- in area under the electrical transformers. I continued looking for an exit, and eventually found it, through one of the pulping rooms. The problem? Though I had left the hum of electricity behind, this room buzzed too, and wires hung down from the ceiling. I was forced to limbo my way to the exit, unable to tell whether or not the wires were actually live. While I plan to go back to the paper mill, I don't intend to go anywhere near these areas. The mill is extensive enough that I can find plenty of safer areas to explore. As it stands, though, electricity is only one of the many hazards this mill contains, and I'm not going to mess around with it. Because honestly? I'm not gonna fry for a photo.

| | | Posted by Hopeless Being in Texas a no trespassing sign will always make me evaluate the situation for a few days. Since by law they can shoot you as long as they have that sign up in a clear area. If a location has many of them posted I'm sure whoever posted them knows this as well. If its just one then you could have always missed it. So far that's been the only thing to make me hesitate.
| I lived in Texas for 20 years, and the last thing thing that made me hesitate explores were no trespassing signs. I get what you're saying, but I've never read a single urbex story that ended with anyone getting shot by the property owner. -- - I used to say buildings near busy areas were on my stay away from list, but as I discovered, if there's a will, there's a way. - Audible alarms are annoying, but fuck everything about motion detectors. While it's still terrifying to set off a high-pithced alarm, nothing makes me more nervous than trying to get out after setting off a motion detector. - Buildings that are abandoned but are too kept up on the outside make me incredibly nervous. I'm not worried about running into people which is a relief, but if someone is keeping the appearance to look active, you know there's more than meets the eye. - Depending on the area, locations that are well off into the country or down a long stretch of road. I'm always paranoid someone will drive up the road or still be using the building/area for whatever reasons.

| | | Palisade fencing. You Americans don't know how lucky you are to not have to deal with the aptly nicknamed 'bollock-shredder' fence often used in the UK to protect sites. I have only ever climbed it twice, and it's really not something to make a habit of if you can avoid doing so at all costs. You just gotta hope someone has removed a bolt from one of the slats so it moves sideways, or bent two bars apart, or yanked a section out the ground or dug a hole underneath it. I've seen it variously topped with barbed wire, with reams of razor wire running along the top and bottom, with the whole base of the fence including all the bars sunk into concrete, with a secondary fence attached right behind it, with the whole lot welded solidly together and areas of Palisade fencing about 8 metres high. It's the bane of mine, and many other UK explorers, existence.
