I wonder if there would be enough demand to have a video comp on here?
Something like, shoot a maximum 3 minute UE related clip - include a red ball and a broken flash light (the items are to prove it's a clip made for this comp).
You could have prizes but then winning the prestigious award should be good enough
You could get 8 clips and then do a poll to decide who wins.
Maybe you could have a few polls/awards? Most Artistic, Funniest, Best Picture... whatever... you could decide.
We have a UE short film festival every couple of years and it's always a great night - although we all meet up at a few venues (last year we had it in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane at the same time) so I'm not sure how it work on a forums.
Anyway, just thought I'd run it up the flag-pole and see if anyone salutes it. FacialBook is killing online forums.

I totally would be into this idea. I think in order for it to get more of a response, there would need to be some sort of prizes awarded. I don't know where/how we'd the funding for that would work, but I think it would still generate more of a buzz.
Either way, let's do it!

Posted by fiftyone_eggs I'd be down too but it would make it more interesting if there were incentives of some sort. Just sayin.

Posted by fiftyone_eggs Shit I'd do it for a UER shirt. That's more than I normally get for making a UE vid. How do you propose we ensure voting stays fair and unbiased?

Posted by Chris-Kicker biased? on the internet?
As an idea (for a starting point - I'll go with the flow if it happens) I've adapted a few rules based on the 3 short film comps we've had in Australia (they were in the flesh so to speak and not online).
I would suggest...
People nominate their clip (title and length) but do not distribute it (put it on YouTube, Vimeo etc but password protect it or do not make it public). Someone will need to check the videos to make sure they qualify.
Then when the voting starts all the clips are made viewable.
We set up a poll with all the submissions... you could pick the order they sit out of a hat.
There is no way of making it totally fair (some may campaign for their clip) but ah well, it's just for fun (isn't it?).
I would also suggest that with a UER Short Film Comp that you do include an item that must be in all clips rather than just people making a montage of their most bestest gooderest artistic clips - and if the item was a red ball then having a red ball in the credits would not pass - the red ball would have to appear in the clip and not just be edited in.
Setting a deadline can also be a pain because even if 60 people were keen on this idea, you will more than likely struggle to get 8 clips out of them (I'd love to be proven wrong), however you do need a deadline... and someone to keep pushing and pestering the whole thing.
Keep the clips short (I'd suggest under 3 minutes). Leave voting open for a couple of weeks so as people aren't forced to watch all the clips at once and get over it all.
Create a prize pool (I have some UE related stuff and an Oscar style trophy... except it has a big hard on)... one of those customized UER shirts that says UER 2012 Film Champ might be good if someone could donate it (hint hint)...
I'll post some stuff from the Aussie short film night.

The problem with leaving it open for voting is (as stated) biased. I've been in a couple of online video competitions where it was just a free for all. People voting multiple times and tilting the scale heavily in their favor, or setting up multiple accounts, or just bombarding the votes with all of their friends. It then turns into who's the most popular on the interwebz. I tend to steer clear of competitions voted in such fashion.
Granted, if all the prize is here is a shirt, it probably won't happen, but I'd still say a more fair way would be to designate a panel of judges who can all put their votes in. Vote on such categories as, "style," "technical," "story," etc. Obviously no one planning on participating can be a judge. This method would leave it a bit more fair for everyone.

Good idea about the PM's, we might also want to expand this into the UE Main section for a wider audience if anyone might be interested. "Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore." - Andre Gide
