| | | Posted by badgerbadger I've run into a lot of Hobos living in Charlotte, NC, but never while Urbexing. I worked at Wal-mart and footed my way to work, so I would meet them along the way/while I was there. Share a smoke with 'em, bought one guy a sandwich at McD's. They all have great stories to share, and they are very interesting people if you are willing to sit with them, talk share and listen. It's like Social Exploration.

This is the best advice in my opinion as well. Most of these people are just happy if you don't cross the street when you see them coming. We are all just people with different sets of circumstances to work with. They could possibly know of undiscovered UE sites also. AND MACE. [last edit 8/25/2010 3:43 PM by ENDO - edited 1 times]

| | | That video is hilarious. Have only really "run into" a couple bums while exploring. Day to day life, I've run into many more. The first was at a big old factory. He was trying to find a tarp his buddy told him about that was supposed to be in there somewhere, so that he could keep his stuff dry during the course of his travels. He was kind of suspicious at first as to why I was there, but warmed up pretty quick when I offered to help him look. At first he thought I was one of "those dealers", and he "didn't wanna get mixed up in that shit". I said I'd give him a shout if I found it during my time inside, and he left me alone. The second time we woke up a guy in a back alley that was sleeping under an old flatbed trailer in the rain. He started grumbling at us, but not really in a threatening way. He rolled out from under the trailer and looked like shit - even moreso than you'd expect most guys to look after just rolling out from beneath a trailer in an alley at 2AM. He was otherwise quiet and was feverish and pale, said he'd been really sick for the past week and had collapsed there - couldn't make it back to where his stuff was. He also had shallow respirations and an irregular, thready pulse. He just wanted to be left alone, but we tried to convince him to go to the hospital or let us call an ambulance, or get him to a shelter or something, but he didn't want any of it. He just wanted to get back to where his "stuff" was or be left alone. Me and my buddy ended up lifting him and carrying him based on his sketchy directions a couple blocks over to a bench that had a soaking wet sleeping bag and a ratty backpack full of other misc items stashed beneath, where he urged us to leave him be. He said he wished there was something he could give us for our trouble and hoped he didn't make us sick, too. He was extremely grateful, though, and at one point made a remark along the lines of how much humanity was screwed up and that he never would have expected anybody to help him. Never did find out what became of him. I think in general, as long as you don't treat homeless people like they're beneath you, and you don't act like they're something to be terrified of, you shouldn't have any problems with them. They usually just want to mill about and do their own thing. I'd be far more worried about running into people conducting drug-related/gang related activities and such.

Heh, I used to live within walking distance of it. Might as well contribute to this thread. The one hobo I ran into in Charlotte was really nice; he warned us about drug dealers that lived in a nearby abandoned building and told us to yell for him if we ever needed help.

It's really about common sense not being afraid of the city. I think most people would be afraid of a crackhead or gangbangers in an abandoned building. I know I would be. I work around some pretty bad parts of Chicago. There are just certain places that you don't need to wander into.

| | | I was visiting some other explorers in Cleveland and we entered one building and on the bottom floor of the building there was a bum sitting there Lucky that the guys I was with just gave him a cigarette and he got up and let us explore! Most bums are nice and will leave you alone if you leave there stuff alone.

Crackheads and gangbangers are different from hobos and squatters. Not every hobo is a crackhead. Of course it's common sense to stay out of truly bad parts of town, but not every abandonment with a squatter in it is in a bad part of town. If you know that an area is dangerous, don't go. I totally agree with you and I should have mentioned that I guess. There are alot of homeless people that are just having a hard time in their life and like you said aren't crackheads or gangbangers.

| | | When exploring some abandoned/ripped open trailers, my group encountered a sleeping bum. He woke up and started making conversation - it was mostly stories he was making up about being a millionaire and waiting for his daughter to drive over from across the country. It was a good experience, but it was frightening at first - you just never know how a stranger is going to react.

| | | To the poster who said pullout your cell phone, thats a bad idea. alot of the bodegas in the neighborhood i used to live in specialized in stolen cellphones and throwaways. IF you go around pulling your 500 smartphone out your just presenting an opportunity.
