| | New steam tunnel fanatic here < on 5/28/2010 1:01 AM >
| | | Hello, I'm new to this forum and I look forward to contributing. I'm particularly excited about the wiki, since I am a big fan of wikis in general. The way I got into Urban Exploration was by exploring steam tunnels at universities I visited. I recently set up a website dedicated to the subject of college steam tunnel exploration. http://www.steamtunnel.net Feedback would be appreciated. I hope to get a better camera and do some more documentation of places I explore. I live in upstate New York currently but will be moving to Long Island in the fall.

Uggo format and some typos. Here's a picture for your NCSU steam tunnel entry. You should try for municipal networks - risky but rewarding.
Biggest (cleanest) steam tunnel I've been in. Ought to have a picnic sometime.

| | | thanks I know its not really a very pretty site, but it's not something I've been dedicating a lot of time to. I mainly wanted a place to host pictures I've taken to show friends. In the future it may evolve into a more general site documenting my travels, as I am bound to exploring other areas besides steam tunnels. I will be traveling to Los Alamos, New Mexico, this summer and will likely do some exploring there. And yes, I copied a lot of the table from Ben Hine's site. I figured that was ok to do since his site has obviously been neglected since around 2000 and since I am reformatting and copyediting his work. Nope. Give credit. Maybe mark the ones from there with an *, but it's still someone's work.

| | | I think there should be a new survey of "places you most often explore" because nowadays it's a little different from 1999...

Little known fact: steam tunnels are actually portals back to 1999.

| | | I was always a little bummed- the tunnels in my school are open access. They were still kinda neat my freshman year, but they're kinda boring when everyone can use them freely.
I live in upstate New York currently |
Oh, where at?
Be careful, not safe. "Urbex- so much fun that it should be illegal." |

| | | Currently live in Queensbury NY, I'll be visiting Los Alamos this summer (probably do some exploring around there). @AnAppleSnail I will be revamping the "maps" page soon. I think a lot of the links on there right now are deadlinks anyways.

We also explored 2 (active) boiler plants. I guess that was a bit risky but we did it on a weekend at night while no one was there.

I like how they typed typed out "This Way" four times as the directional arrows aren't enough to get the point across.

| | | Well, I'm excited about your website, just because I love steam tunnels more than just about anything else on earth. Ben Hines' website was what got me started in UE 12 years ago... as far as I'm concerned he's one of the pioneers of the hobby. I would very much appreciate if you could give credit where credit is due, though (as far as stuff lifted from Ben Hines' website, tunnel maps copied without credit given, etc...). I saw a tunnel map on your website that I made; it doesn't look like much, but it was the product of 4 years of serious work, and it'd have been nice to see a link back to the website it came from. I know that there are a lot of other people who put a lot of time into their tunnel maps, too. If you have ANY questions about any steam tunnels in Virginia, just let me know. I'd be happy to help out.

| | | Thanks, I understand your concern. The steam tunnel map I made of RPI took a lot of work as well. I guess I wanted a more permanent place for these maps. Its sortof hard to give credit in some cases, because some of the maps I pulled off of other compilations like, http://www.flickr....72057594102155750/ on Flickr, and another I found on urbanadventure.org. I linked to VT Undergound (great site) and the AngelFire site. Let me know if there's any other links you think I should add.

| | | So, I was scoping out the active VA hospital we have here, for anything interesting and I came across a manhole that said STEAM TUNNEL. I've never been in one but now I'm interested. How do people usually go about getting into them?

Manholes, hatches, doors, or high explosives. Either when people aren't looking, or in a way that they won't pay attention.

The manhole I found would need a crane to open. It's in a somewhat secluded area. Would that be a good Idea? Edit: I ment crow bar, not crane. [last edit 8/3/2010 5:28 AM by JaneDoe - edited 1 times]
