| | | What factors made you decide it's time to put on the ol' P-100 respirator? Do you always use one? Is it based on research? or signage?

Well, signage doesn't do much good- pretty much every building is going to have one up. For me, it's more along the lines of air quality and knowing where the asbestos is--- the place i regularly go, is covered in Asbestos. Around the pipes, it was mixed in with the cement and the tiles were all made of it. common sense says "mask!!" but for some reason, I haven't really worn one yet. Since i'm thinking about venturing into some of the basements where there isn't a lot of fresh air, i'll likely be bringing a respirator with me. Above ground, i don't use it much.

| | | Learn what mold smells like - mold gets me worse than anything else. If it's dusty in a place, if you'll be stirring up dust (A few people making a long crawls in dry steam tunnels), you'll want a mask. But most of all, if you want to look cool.

| | | I use it when ever I see lots of bird/animal droppings, mold and known or obvious asbestos. Basically, when ever my spidey sense tells me to? I do. [last edit 4/2/2010 5:21 PM by bonnie&clyde - edited 2 times]

| | | Especially around mold for me. I instantly know when it's in a building because my asthma kicks in after about five seconds. I'm like the Geiger counter for everyone else in the group- but only for mold, not radiation :p

| | | For asbestos: -When it will be moved (resulting in it being stirring it up) -If it's dry or arrid (more apt to go airborne than if it's a damp rainy day. -If it's broken any laying around (if it's alraedy broken, then there's dust asbestos dust to be stirred up. -If there is a breeze or open windows stirring it up. -If you'll physically bump into any pipes (steam tunnels).
For mold: At work I sit next to the county mold inspector's office. I hear his phone calls all day long. From what he says. There is no specific killer or deadly mold, even if it's black. It's really more dependent upon the person and their specific sensitivities. For mold to make someone sick, it may not make anyone else sick. Also, there's literally 1000's of types of mold out there. So you can't really be specific. I'd say if there are signifigant amounts, the place is mold central and you're stirring it up maybe. Or if you have allergies or are known to have respiratory problems. Personally 've never worried about mold or pigeon shit though. At least they're natural. I'm more concerned about the asbestos.

| | | I Would say just to be safe just use one always if its a mostly indoor UE. In a place with broken out windows you know that birds probably fly in and out all the time, and in most abandoned places, most likely one of the main reasons they were closed down and never demolished in the first place was the amount of asbestos. Then again. I got me a bad case of asthma, so I try to play it safe.

| | | A LOT of bird shit or a superfund site will get me to wear a cartridge filter I'd recommend a 3M 6000 series half face mask and a 3M 60926 Multigas/Vapor Cartridge http://www.drillsp...ticulate_Cartridge If you worried about asbestos only, get a few "pancake filters" I bought the model 3M 2096 particulate filter because cartridges get heavy after an hour or two. http://www.drillsp...ce_Acid_Gas_Filter

| | | Generally when draining, I'll use it if there is presence of bats/pigeons/lotsa poo, but if something smells odd, I might chuck it on just in case. I use a P2, basically a normal dust mask, cept it's got an activated carbon filter, cost $13 for 2 at Bunnings (hardware).

| | | Usually I have every intention of wearing a mask..but then excitement rushes to my head and I tend to put health hazards behind me. Probably not the best idea..but I figure watching out for death holes and signs of collapse is probably better to pay attention to than all the asbestos I'm probably taking in. I don't have a canister mask..but I have used regular dust masks in area's where it seems to just be "dusty" ..and I still blow plaster out of my nose for a few days..pleasant hobby we have.
