| | | Reading High and Lewis' Corporate Wasteland now, the view expressed by High of UE is not sympathetic. I tend to agree w/what he says for the most part, however due to his subject matter, industrial decay, he says nothing about those of us who explore things other than abandoned industrial sites. It is a kind of unfair painting of explorers as ONLY voyeuristic children of privilege. I for one grew up around industrial decay and it was only when I grew into myself that I was able to understand better some of its meaning. So it's unfair to say that teens and 20-somethings who are into exploration do it only for the thrill, maybe they, like me, don't yet have the critical tools at their ready to understand what the shuttered plant means. I want to defend explorers in the face of his critique, but I have a difficult time doing so after reading some of the very words and description of images High uses. However,to generalize that all explorers are merely colonizers is just as wrong as the explorer who is only in it for pics and giggles. The book is thoughtful, and thought-provoking, though, and I recommend it to anyone who takes exploring seriously. [last edit 3/11/2010 8:55 PM by G to the Race - edited 1 times]

| | | "Creepers" Almost positive it's about the Baker in Mineral Wells... However, you will find it in the fiction section.

From skimming through a bit of that book on Amazon, it appears that the authors get a lot of mileage out of Jinx articles. This makes total sense, since everything Jinx has ever published is UNBELIEVABLY DOUCHEY. Just wanted to get that out there.

I think people missed Jinx's point. What they did was cool, and they did do some good explorations--their history of Typhoid Mary and the subsequent exploration of the hospital which housed her was great, IMO--but their point was to mix fact w/the fictions that they grew up on. I read their text thinking the whole time that I was in on some big joke they were pulling on the rest of the readers; not that they were trying to be bad-ass, but that they were poking fun at the kind of person who would take what they did seriously. High doesn't use their stuff correctly, IMO, unless he is saying that to even use the spaces of exploration for some kind of ludic adventure is off-limits, too.
