| | | I would look on E-bay for a used 30d. You can get a good lens and a good camera with accessories for $500. I bought a T1i new but I wish I would have just looked for a good used canon and then I would have gotten a good lens for probably a cheaper price.

Also be sure to check out craigslist. I got a 30D with a 4gb CF card and an extra battery for $350. I didn't come with the kit lens, but I got a 50mm f1.8 and a FD converter so I could use my film lenses. Not bad for $500. You can also check the condition of the camera in person, too, which is a big advantage.

| | | The K1000 is a great starter film camera... just make sure the metering system is working properly. I had mine over 10 years, and had to get the light meter replaced... but the camera was well over 20 years old at that point. It is a classic, uncomplicated SLR camera. Personally, I love Pentax stuff... I have a K10D, and its a solid performer. Also, the body is sealed against weather and dust. They also have newer lenses that are also sealed as well. Image stabilization is in camera as opposed to the lenses, so it makes future lens purchases cheaper. IS Lenses can get pretty pricey. Also, the K10 can make use of a large number of lenses made for Pentax cameras... best ones are those with the option of setting the aperture to automatic... then you can use the camera controls for the aperture. Otherwise you have to use stop-down metering.
