| | | What to expect on my first rooftop? < on 10/23/2009 11:21 AM >
| | | Alright, so, what should one expect when going to the top of high profile buildings? This is how I expect things to go down for me this afternoon: I can take the elevator to a top floor (not the very top, though), find the stairs or come up with some excuse to ask someone where they are (is this floor x, where are the stairs then, etc...), then I assume the roof access is located all the way up the main stairs (is this a correct assumption?). I'm half expecting an alarmed door to the roof though, or at least it'll be labeled as such. Should I just go for it any way I find it? So, looking for experiences with roof access from others and for any common discrepencies with my "strategy." Thanks.

| | | The "stairs" often just lead up to the off-limits areas of temperature control and storage and such; you'll then need to hunt around for a ladder going up. The benefit of ladder/trapdoor is that I've never seen one alarmed, they either have a padlock or nothing at all. (And the padlock is invariably mounted on a latch with screws facing you...).

| | | Hmm, I see. Though, I can see, thanks to Google Earth, Google Maps, and Bing Maps, that there appears to be a stairway in the center of where I shall go today. Maybe not connected to the main stairs though, but as you said, just not a ladder. And I found that today Air Force One is coming in. What a day to UE?

Sounds like a great day to be skulking around on a rooftop.

| | | Indeed, be sure to bring one of these... http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=73528 You know, in case you don't have room for a tripod.

It's okay, I'm sure the snipers aren't on this roof - they're on the ones right above me.

I don't know what your talking about! We're all perfectly sane, logical and thoughtful individuals.......now if you'll excuse me I have a roof at MIT I need to get to, oops almost forgot my shotgun monopod ;)

| | | Has anybody said birds yet? Can I say it? Expect birds. Are there seriously going to be roof snipers? That sounds like a TERRIBLE day to do a rooftop to me. The thing I like about rooftops is that you generally don't have to be afraid of making a lot of noise..unless there's somebody in the floor below the roof..because nobody on the ground can hear you anyways.

The seagulls in the city seem to have migrated. During the summer the get downright violent, once their babies grow up they disappear.

| | | As long as you have legs and/or a brain, it's really hard to get caught on rooftops. The birds do suck though.

| | | I'm probably the biggest loser on this site right now, I was immediately deterred in the lobby of every building I tried. They have gates to get to the elevators and you need to tap a card to get through. I wasn't sure if I should approach a security desk or not. Eventually I got tired of finding the same thing in every high rise and sought refuge in the subway tunnels (which ironically also have the same gates to get through... but I actually had a card for these ones, ha). I'd hate approaching security desks unless a guard approaches me first, but I guess I'll have to next time if I am to actually do something. Any suggestions on what to say?

Dress like you belong, be engaged in a conversation on your cell phone, have your other hand full w/ a briefcase and just follow someone else through the gate and into the elevator. and know the name of an office on a high floor, just in case a security guard has an inexplicable moment of energy and curiosity.

| | | ^^Aleks' idea is great, also maybe have a backup reason to go to that office, take a fake resume and drop it off if need be. WHO KNOWS you might just get hired and with the economy sucking, hell life could change for the better. Also, I had no clue the birds were so violent, they never bother me. Although I did see a fellow explorer run through a flock of geese a week ago and I was afraid they were going to kill him; I've never heard such angry honking.

Really? The wings on a goose can break your legs, arms or spine with one hit. Last time a turkey bothered me I ate it on thanksgiving. ;)

Seriously? The geese around here aren't that badass. The turkeys will chase you down though. I saw one chase a woman into her car then peck dents into her door heh.
