I just saw on the news here that someone was hurt while exploring Gates, I won't go into details or anything, but I just wanted to make sure everyone on here is okay.

Denver Post:

Denver fire officials rescued a man who fell 10 feet into an elevator shaft today.

The man and two companions were exploring the former Gates Rubber Co. at Mississippi Avenue and Broadway when they entered a door through an alley, said Terry Neiman, assistant fire chief.

The young men — all in their 20s — walked about 10 feet in the dark when one of them fell into an elevator shaft. The man fell about 10 feet and landed on the bottom of the shaft that contained about 2 to 3 feet of water.

Fire officials were able to reach the man in the shaft through the basement door. When the man was rescued, he was semiconscious and was transported for treatment.

I notice that they said 'exploring' and not 'vandalising' or something like that. Hmmmm...

I just modified that post with a news link from Fox's online news.

EDIT: It says that he was rescued on Sunday morning, meaning it probably happened sometime around when I was there. That's crazy!

We thought we might have heard others but weren't sure. It's possible we might have heard them around... but then again they said he fell down an elevator shaft, so it's probably near where they're knocking it down.

Well the thing is on one hand it's local Fox so it's not as bad as national Fox. Also, the subcaption is: "Tresspasser falls 25 feet in elevator shaft".

Trespassing used 2 times.
Exploring used 2 times, one using quotes suggesting it's arguably exploring.

So it seems to me they're only calling it what it is, but still in no way condone it. By the way, my supervisor got a call from a friend who wasn't "doing well" and when he asked why, she said her friend got hurt in the Gates incident and was in a coma.

Small world eh?

Wow, three whole metres into some water!!

Would that even hurt?

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

I dont know, lets find out!

EDIT: The person could have hit their head on the side of the shaft or bottom if they went head first. Man that would be icky going head first into some greasy elevator refuse...

who goes "exploring" without a flashlight? not to say that i have not done it once or twice myself but i let my eyes adjust and then was very careful to see where i was going, and i knew where i was going having been in the building numerous times before.

i can only imagine walking into a big square black void thinking it's just a set of open double doors, only to find that it's an elevator shaft that had the doors removed.

picture of said door
http://www.724phot....php?showimage=327

from the Denver post story that Imprez posted it sounds like they did not make it far into the building, good thing he didn't get off the first floor before he fell.

anyone think they might up security?

From what I can figure he fell into a shaft where they're demolishing, so it wasn't easy to tell that's what they were coming up on. If that's the case, they weren't using flashlights yet because that would put them out in a construction yard and easily viewable to anyone going by. So it wasn't like he just wandered into it, he might not have been looking at the ground, and the shaft just worked as a nice trap in the dark.

Also, I know you probably just misread it, but it said 2-3 feet, not meters. 3 meters is like 9 feet of water. So he fell in less than a meter of water.

Eh, there are places you can use bolt cutters to get into the basement. They'll only half-ass it is my expectation. It's the police we're talking about.
