Does anyone know if the tunnels under the old Nova Scotia Hospital still exist? A friend told me that the tunnels got older the deeper you go. Has anyone seen them?
Has anyone ever been inside the tunnels that run beneath downtown. I've heard that there is an access point in the basement of the Dennis Bldg. on George St.

I'd like to know more about the ones under downtown, I've run through a lot of parking garages, attempted to get into building basements, and gone through the transit tunnels between hotels (which admittedly aren't that exciting).

But I would love to see if there are some older tunnels.

My other question, along the sidewalk by Parade Square, there are obviously some doorways, where the large mural is running along barrington, anyone have any idea where they lead? They look like they go right under parade square?

-There is/was a tunnel going from the old Infirmary to Camp Hill, but it caved in years/dacades ago.
-I heard (may have possibly seen, but didn't follow it) there's a steam tunnel that went from the old Infirmary to TUNS because the Infirmary used to supply it.
-I've seen an enterence point to the underground tunnels in downtown but it was bricked off.
-There's Urban Legend that there's a tunnel from Citidal Hill to George's.

that's all i know about hali-tunnels.

There are two you can see from the Highway, and it’s CFAD Bedford Canadian Forces Ammunition Depot... they won't arrest you… they will shoot on site at that location...

Good luck with those tunnels on the Magazine Hill... I guess we'll read about it in the paper?

As for the doorways leading to under Grand Parade, I remember hearing once that there is storage space underneath the square which the city uses to store stuff such as the metal barricades used at concerts and outdoor events. I also seem to recall going on a tour of City Hall once when I was really young, and apparently one of the basement levels connects to this underground storage place (which makes sense, since they're adjacent to each other). No idea beyond that though.

There is something that's always peaked my curiosity, and I wonder if anyone knows anything about this. In the bottom floor of the Scotia Square parking garage (lower-mall level), in one of the stairwells, there's a wall boarded up (you could tell there was a hallway or set of doors behind it) with a single locked door in the middle of it for access to whatever is behind it. Perhaps it once lead to a different (or disused) part of the mall? Wherever it leads to, I always take a trip there to see if the door is still locked, every time I'm at Scotia Square. That, and I love riding those elevators for some reason (and the ones at The Bay in West End Mall, although I always feel like I'm going to get mugged in that parking garage!).

What kind of locked door?

I am trying to rack my brain, I remember being in a parking garage a while ago and seeing something like this.

It was either in the scotia square mall area, or under the Aliant building- I don't recall. but I remember going down and down and down to the lowest level, I didn't even think it could have gone down that far but it did. Down on a little area at the bottom which seemed to be for nothing since there were no spaces and room enough for maybe 3 cars there was a heavy door in a dark corner on a far wall and next to it was a really neat looking keypad, the type with flat keys that you type a number into.

We're not talking of the same thing are we?

definitely not the same place. Your staircase sounds a lot more exciting than mine.
The place I'm referring to is the bottom level of the Scotia Square parking garage (which incidently is the same as the lower level of the shopping mall, the same level that the security office is on); it's in the bottom of one of the stairwells in the garage, and it's just a boarded up passage with a locked door set into the middle of it.
Although I realized recently that it was probably just another entrance to the shopping mall, from before they did all of the construction to the mall years ago.

Ah okay, I'll check it out next time I am there.

I think I have a picture somewhere of the door I am talking about, it was a really weird area, not even a staircase.

Just imagine a normal parking structure, and it was kind of like you got to the bottom level, which was a whole level same size as the rest, but then there is a ramp looking like it is going down to another level, but leads to this small area only about oh...20 feet by 20 feet or so. The fire-stairwell does come out down here, and it's the lowest it goes. Then off in the corner there is this heavy door and keypad.

What struck us most odd was the keypad, it wasn't one that you often see in malls on doors, like the ones that are on the handle and are just little metal push buttons. This was a really professional metal/digital keypad.

Like I said, I am almost 100% sure it was under the Aliant building.

Regarding the downtown tunnels, I understand them to run from the waterfront, straight up George street, beneath the Grand Parkade, up the hill past the Town Clock to the Citadel. Making entrances at the Dennis building, City Hall and the doorways along Barrington very likely.

I have to go to the Dennis building very soon, maybe I'll get "lost" and poke around the basement a bit.

Where is the bricked up entry point mentioned by sonikgirl? Is it in the d/t core?

the seahorse, used for storage, i haven't been there since they reno'd so no idea if it's still exposed. or even if it was part of the 'mysterious' 'tunnels'

another rumour, the tunnels were used to carry liquor up from the harbour.

Well if this is the case, and they were used for liquor was it transport to the Hill or to establishments along the streets?

There must be entrances all the way up, if that is the case, what about in the sewers along there under the manhole covers?

Has anyone been to the archives to check for this sort of thing?
