extremely valid point jester, with everyone acting as eyes and ears you are better off then your own two eyes and ears..
so if more eyes and ears is better.. 6 eyes and 3 ears are better then 2 and 2

A very very valid point Jester. Also, lets talk abou radio silence. Lets say you tell your friend "radio silence" since you are near security. Then he has some kind of emergency (broken ankle, police, fell through the floor, so on, so on...) and now he has a dilema, does he break radio silence to inform you of such emergency? Or does he stay silent and you never know he got hurt, is bleeding to death, got arrested, somehow fell through a floor (Pravus knows about that)? If he breaks silence and you have no ear bud, you know of emergancy, but now you are caught. If he doesn't break silence, you know nothing, sneak away from secerity only to walk into the same danger your friend found, and now you are both screwed instead of just one of you which would leave the other to get help. But yes, not useing an ear bud would be best......

again personal choice.

Yea.... Nothing like falling through a floor and barely catching yourself on cross beams then looking down and seeing a hedge of rusted farm equipment forming a nice pit of spikes.. that would have ended my day extremely quickly..
Besides.. we don't talk about that event, and this is why I don't take point anymore..

and thats an extremely valid point, if all the sudden your standing under a cop and he doesn't see you, you can't tell anyone or he's gunna hear you.. Your buddy who doesn't know your situation sees the cops partner and he deicides to tell you so you don't get caught, guess what.. yer busted

I always used the call button for emergency purposes. The downside is some of the FRS radios can be hit alot. One hit a few tones, allowed people to stay silent, or that person couldnt talk.

Its not about the radio its about using it properly.

I would turn down the radio so it was on but making no noise. Hit the button and talk when I could etc.

Most radios can be used properly if you spend some time learning it. Thats where you actually have to prep a bit and learn your radio, its characteristics etc.

Yeah, with us wraiths, the call button is the alert, always. Yes, we have some accidental *alerts* but with headsets someone will ask if it was a real alert, and you find out pretty quick. Having a headset on our radios has saved our asses numerous times.

A little extreme, don't you think?

Do people even read other people's posts? I clearly said that radio silence was the norm unless it was urgent.

And if you don't think that someone getting hurt is urgent, then maybe you should find a new hobby...

the whole point of what he was saying is if someone got hurt you 'could' get him out and to help.. and 'extreme' or not, if you make the wrong kind of noise at the right time your buddy will still get to the hospital (hell it could even be something stupid like a sprain or stepping on a nail), but now every ones arrested too.. I mean granted if my buddy is impales by rebar and bleeding out of every orifice damn right I'm gunna find that cop and take the charges, but a nail through the boot we can wait untill the cop passes
It's not even that extreme of a case, just a wrong place wrong time kinda deal.. Just a simple countermeasure to getting charged with anything.. if shits goin bad it just sucks to get arrested on top of it.. Unless of course you enjoy needlessly paying fines and achieving a large record *smirk*

Regardless, every single explorer I know of that uses two way radios do not use headsets, throat mics or the like. Including some of the people who have replied on here lauding the greatness of those items.
Speaker mics, sure. Those are great tools.

I myself usualy use Speaker mics with my radios, but if im in a loud place where stealth isn't an issue, and I just want to hear whats on the radio I may use an ear piece, hooked to the speaker mic of a jedi

These kids just realized that there IS a FRS radio, and you show them an ?/\/\ Astro Saber... hahahaha... They have no clue about that stuff...

Fuk The sabre, XTS....

Whatever.

Again, what is this radio!!! i must know!! I love radio's, love jamming them, and being an all-round pain in the ass for the communications world.
I now use an alinco dj-580, dual band, great as i can use ham phone patches in an emerg, and being unlocked( mod's), i can use it as a gmrs with 5.5 watts.
I also just purchased a kenwood th g71, 6 watts also modified for gmrs capability, with alpa numeric display for ease.................y. Enough bragging.

ABOUT FRS GMRS
Please people, keep in mind frs radios suck, only a watt or so. It's the gmrs radio's with the HIGHER WATTAGE that should make you want to get them. the higher wattage makes them go further...got it....gooood. (that and a good antenna, lenght maters.....yah, yah, but don't screw with the length, it MUST be a radiating length, another topic, never to be talked about here).

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

Well, when it comes down to it, line of sight is what makes these UHF radios "go further". You could be putting out 100 watts and it would be a waste if there was a mountain in the way. (FRS radios are supposed to have an ERP of no more then 0.5 watts by the way).

As for those Motorolas, all I can say is start saving your allowance.

And that's exactly why you won't be getting any advice/help from me.

BTW, those radios (XTS5000 and Astro Saber) cost around $6000 from Motorola, so happy jamming

When I say Digital, I mean, Digital modulation - not Digital Squelch or Spread Spectrum.

Yeah, but you can't hack the shit out of the XTS5000. The Astro Saber is one of the last radios Motorola made that you can hack. You can get a base model, that doesn't do digital or anything like that, and with a few key-strokes, you have a fully digital, encryption capable, etc... radio. XTS5000 flash upgrades (Assuming you can even get them from Circle M) would cost you more than what you paid for the radio.

That and they're a bitch to program.

And, nevermind, I'm stupid. That's a 3000.

In which case, I retract what I said about the non-hacking

But the Saber still owns ...although the 3000 and Astro Saber are the exact same thing, just in a different form-factor...

I use a Nextel. I turn all noise off and keep it on vibrate, stick on my belt. Then if we need to talk, we don't get rings or anything like that. if no one responds right a way we assume they're somewhere where it would be a risk to. If they don't respond at all we call again. Then if still no response we start searching. This is also good so if you need to call out for help it's got the cell phone too. No need to carry a radio and a cell phone when they come as one. It wasn't too expensive either.

Nextel/iDEN is a good idea, but their service areas aren't always the best when doing UE. Motorola does make a model (r750+) that supports "talkaround", which is a simplex radio-to-radio low power channel that will work even when there is no service available. I'm not sure how much power these put out, but I would assume very little (as in, half a watt). If it's around half to 1 watt, expect about the same range as a set of FRS radios.
