We used to use cheap 2-mile cobras they worked pretty good, then we upgraded to various motorola talkabouts (I use a T5400), they work well enough, but if you are far enough to be out of range with a radio your not going to be of any use to the person on the other end.. we tend to stick together as much as possible aside from clearing rooms and moving from cover to cover, but we are normally at least in visual range, which makes it alot easier to watch each others backs...
other then that a good mic/earbud is all you need..

Honestly, very few urban explorers need more than typical FRS. I've used them for years, and they've served their purpose quite well, with a pretty low cost.

I have an old, yet extremely durable Cobra radio I occasionally bring out. Only 2.1km distance, but it does a good job. I've had it dropped in water, stepped on, dropped from the top of a manhole shaft...and it hasn't lost an ounce of its life.

Those barely reach .5 km, someone lied to you.

Hrm.. I had a great one for my cobra radio (but those were two prong) but now I just use some bulky thing Shinken gave me, works nice for me on recon because I can pretty much cover the entire thing with my hair all down.. But Shinken got this REALLY nice throat mic that works great, I'll tell him to post a link to it because I can't remember the company..
But most importantly what kind of prong is in your radio? (two prong or one, or if it's an odd prong size..)

I won't use radios without headsets. Depending on the value of your radio though, it can be better to just buy a radio that comes with a headset included. I find for typical FRS radios, the headsets cost almost as much as the radio seperately, but in units that include them it costs just a couple bucks difference...

I won't use headsets ever. I find they limit my auditory awareness where I am. Especially if I'm somewhere where there may be active security.

Many times I've heard things that I wouldn't have been able to if I were wearing a headset.

Here's a tip.

Often times we'll go into a place and keep one person who doesn't feel like going in outside watching the perimeter from a secure location. Radio silence is the norm, unless the explorer initiates a transmission.

If it's important, and the watcher needs to contact me, I'll keep my radio on a low volume, and he'll key his radio 3 or 4 times so I'll hear the radio keying up multiple times.

(This action is called 'kerchunking'.)

If it's safe to do so, I'll turn my radio up and transmit back to the watcher.

Two-way radios are great if you establish a proper set of procedures for using them while exploring.

Radioing back and forth "Hey, there's this weird thing over here!" is a sure fire way to have someone else in the building hear you and maybe catch you.

They are standard kenwood two prongs, Someone on fleabay may have some with the throat mics in next month so I'll be investing in a pair a.s.a.p! They are only about 20 GBP and would probably only be used on recon work or put on in case we got split up as I hadn't thaught of the loss of hearing... I'm fairly new to all this so I really appreciate your help and info, Cheers fellas!

In regards to the loss of hearing, I've not had it be a factor, though the radios saved me a few times, most notably at Shaughnessy hospital where I was inside the building within feet of the security while they looked for me...

I'll stick with using my earpiece...

Thats why headsets come in handy... I suppose it would suck to have a two speaker headset, but one earbud doesn't make too much of a deference

This is a link the the one I use. I love it, but the commando version isn't worth the money. Just get the ear hook with the regular version. I have used this thing for UE, Paintball, Airsoft, and all kinds of other shit. It does not pick up wind, and if you position it right, if will pick up your whispers. The nice thing about this one is that it has a separate PTT button you can put on your wrist, backpack strap, belt, ect.... Or you can use the PTT that is on your radio. You can also choose between single or double pin. There are plenty of others on the market that are probably pretty good, but this is the one I use and would recomend to anyone that doesn't want to put a small fortune into their comms.

PS. I am curious how not haveing a headset is quieter that using a regular radio on a low volume. What happens in you have it on a low volume and you are in a loud area? Or you are hideing right next to security in a quiet area and your buddy starts talking? With an ear piece, neither situation is a problem.

Adaptors are sold all over for seveal different radios. Check around and do some research. Also I got all my adaptors from a ear piece sold at walmart some time ago.

If you plug one ear and loose your ability to here then you should have your ears checked. The human body was designed to loose several things and still function fairly well. Thats why you have two eyes, ears etc.

You can buy relativly inexpensive Bone-Induction earpieces on eBay. These don't cut down ANY outside audio whatsoever, as they don't even go in your ear (there's a small pad that rests just behind your temple). These things work amazingly well, and the audio quality is second to none.

You can also get throat mics that look like a black collar around the bottom of your neck. These pickup even the slightest whisper from you and transmit it pretty decently.

If you had a setup with both of these, you'd be all set.

Woooooooooooooooooooooosssshhhhhhhhhhhhh

If your buddy starts talking, and you explore with a strict radio silence unless there's a life and death emergency, you really need to explore with a 'buddy' who knows what the term "radio silence" means.

"Fairly well"

But not as good. Nowhere did I say you'd "loose[sic] your ability to here[sic]."
I said you wouldn't be able to hear as well.

And further more: the reason we have two ears and two eyes have nothing to do with redundancy.

We have two eyes to enable binocular vision. Enables us to judge depth.

We have two ears to enable stereo hearing. Enables us to better judge direction of sound.

These are basic evolutionary biological features, Mark.

Insects like spiders, who have many eyes, have redundancy.

Regardless, every single explorer I know of that uses two way radios do not use headsets, throat mics or the like. Including some of the people who have replied on here lauding the greatness of those items.

Speaker mics, sure. Those are great tools.

Hey, I'm not trying to slag on earpieces... it is all personal preference.

It's just my experience that they're overrated, not as useful as they appear to be and an established doctrine of radio silence unless absolutely necessary works better than constant chatter over an earpiece.

I guess I'm trying to say that there's a false sense of security with a throat mic and/or earpiece. Often the user will use their radios far too much when they have those items, and might miss an important sound they otherwise would have heard if they would have had full facility of both their ears.

I use radios with headsets every time I use the radios...

One point that hasn't been raised is the benefits of the radio to give you information you might not otherwise have. In Wraiths, we use them to allow each person to be eyes and ears for all the others. In places with very active security, just getting a click click clik only tells you security is near, whereas when one of your companions can tell you "stay to the right side of the dumpster, security is coming around from the left..." it makes a big freaking difference as to whether you get caught or not... just knowing you need to hide isn't always helpful enough if you don't know which direction what you're supposed to hide from is coming from.

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.
