A good friend is one that bails you out of jail.
But a true friend is the guy sitting next to you in the back of the cop car saying "Man that was awesome!"

Hey fellow Texan you may have already done this but a good place to start would be by reading article 30.05 of the Texas Penal Code.

If you mean by getting busted that you are arrested and in custody charged with criminal trespass you should consider very carefully what you say. By the time you get to this point only a lawyer should be speaking for you.

If your talking about getting busted private security by all means tell the truth and dont argue just apologize. Sometimes pleading ignorant helps.

Things to say when you get caught...

"Isn't this the way to Denny's?"

"Oh yeah? What are YOU doing here?"

"I was abducted by ALIENS and they dropped me off here."

"Hey Look! Is that Elvis?"

Good work, officer. I was TESTIN' ya."

"Run Forrest! RUN!"

"I am not here. I am NOT."

" I think I left a cake around here somewhere."

"Is there a TV in holding?

Often times, saying something completely ridiculous works. Barry Kooda has some good examples fo this.

I usually just stick with honesty, though.

Has anyone used the "I used to live/work/knew someone who did/ here and was just just looking around." line. It's worked a couple times for me, and wasn't an outright lie at the places I was at. Then again, if you're 14 and in a house abandoned since the 70s, the living there excuse might not work.

Telling the truth is the best choice when dealing with law enforcement. They may look at you like you're nuts, but generally they'll let you off with a 'go away and don't come back'. At least in my experience, anyway.

Actually, I've only been caught once. The cops were chasing some guy who came right into the underground parking garage we were in. We ducked into a dead elevator and waited for them to leave but by then we were out of the mood and decided to evacuate the area. Up the stairs and right into the cops, who were still pumped from their recent chase. They gave us a bit of a hard time but we told them the truth that we were just exploring the old train tunnels and they let us go with the standard "...but if I ever catch you around here again, I WILL take your ass to jail..." My advice is have a camera, kiss their shoes and say "Yessir" "Nosir" and "Never again, officer" and hope they're in a forgiving mood..

I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.

Yeah, a decent camera is always a good thing when you're going along the "just taking photos, sir" line. A friend of mine broke into an abandoned brewery armed with a mobile phone camera - needless to say the police didn't buy the "just taking photos" line.

I've been caught twice now. Both times I got off the hook by just telling the truth.

First time I was up at a rock quarry with a friend of mine. We went there to take pictures of the area and check it out. Unfortunately, my camera died after the first picture... Damn... So we start checking the place out. Started climbing on the different elevators and crushers. Then out of no where we hear a screen door slam shut. We drop to the ground and start looking around. We spot a guy getting into his truck. Apparently there was an explosives team from Quebec doing tests or something like that at this particular quarry. So he gets in his truck, drives around the place a bit, finds my car, checks it out, and leaves. We lay low for about 10-15 min and get back in my car and take off. Just as we're approaching the gate to the place we see the truck parked on the road blocking us in. Damn... We sit for a few minutes until my friend decides to get out to talk to the guy. She explains to him that we were just exploring and that we weren't there to steal anything. Even offered to show the guy our pictures! Being the nice guy he was he called the cops to try and cancel his request for officers. No dice... Once a request has been filed they have to dispatch them... Damn... So the police get there and try and scare us by screaming down the road at us and hitting the brakes at the last minute. They get out, check out my car (which I'm surprised they didn't tow due to it's incredibly unsafe state), as us what we were doing, and all the standard stuff. We explain that we were just there taking pictures and that we weren't stealing anything. Apparently the guy was worried that we were stealing the explosives since they were experimental or classified or something like that. And I doubt this part, but the french dude claimed that they were conducting unmaned blasts during the night. We the cop tells us this and asks again what we were doing. We tell him we were just taking pictures and looking around. The officer didn't belive us. He though we were parking it... Fuckers... Ohh well, we got off with no problems at all.

If it's an abandonment and you get caught by private security, honesty and a camera are your best friends.

If it's a live site, I'd bullshit my way out of it. It helps if you approach the seccer first and act like you have a reason to be there. A casual 'hi' has caused every person who looked a tad concerned by my presence in a place to walk right by. Another nice strategy is to bend down to tie your shoe or adjust something on your person.

Uhh, I was more or less with you until you got here. I think people have seen enough James Bond movies that this would make you seem highly suspicious... at least if I was a security guard and saw someone drop down and tie their shoe right as a rounded a corner I'd be kinda curious.

What about the second time?

heh forgot about the second one...

Full story can be found... Here! Probably requires level 3 though... If that's the case, then here's the short version.

bey0nd_r3pair, tengland, myself, and a few other people decided to check out a long abandoned and very exciting looking building. The building itself isn't active, but the property it sits on and all the surrounding buildings are active.

So we go and scout it out, find a parking spot, park, and make our way past the fence and into the courtyard. Now, we hadn't planned on this trip at all so we didn't come prepared at all. In fact, one of the members of the group was wearing a light baby blue t-shirt. Very bad move.

So we're making our approach towards the entry point of the building when all of a sudden we hear an engine and see headlights. We all dropped to the ground and watched as they drive away. We continue and about 10 minutes later we see them again, but this time they're inside the fence. So once agin, we all drop. Eventually the drive drives past us and sees us and gets out and starts taking our information.

We told him we were just looking around and were interested in the building. He explained that he wasn't calling the police and that the information was incase something was stolen or someone was hurt. Apparently vandalism and theft is a big problem.

So he escorts us out and we call it a night.

I know most people prefer to tell their own stories and aren't interested in anyone elses but I really LIKE hearing about the exploits of others. Vicarious adventures.
Weird, I know...

Some times its just good to think on your feet. For example, one time I was in a bell systems man hole that lead into the storm system... Then due to some excitement caused by us finding some manuals on the phone system we got lost. When we finally found a way out it lead us into a small creek behind a bunch of red neck's houses. Where we were firmly greeted by, "What the hell y'all doin' on me property!"

obviously we were scared crapless by the exessess amount of hair and the pungent oder of these red necks(and also that they were growing marajuana and tought that we might be feds.) So we simply just said that we worked for the local phone company and we were making sure the underground cables were ok.

He simply said, "oh." then just stared at us until we were out of his sight. In short sometimes a simple quick story may save your butt from a few rounds of shot gun blast.

I should have pointed out that no, doing it that way is not the way I'd recommend I'll do it if I'm in front of a place I want to go, but are blocked by someone either walking near me or standing by it temporarily. Stepping down and freeing the laces is fairly easy to pretend to do, and then I'll bend down, do the 'ole shoe-tie routine, and hope they leave while I'm at it. At bare minimum, it's a good conversation starter.

Okay, it still might seem James Bond-ish, but it works dammit.

Generally what I do is shake, and piss myself as three cop cars skid to sliding sideways halts boxing me in, while they yell at me.

"DON'T MOVE!" (as if I could unglue my feet from the ground...)

I had just gotten out of a building on a scouting mission, and was walking away to meet with the rest of my group. My friend and I were walking across the gravel lot the building is on when we were suddenly surrounded by police. We were searched, read our rights, told we were being arrested... for ATTEMPTED MURDER. It turns out that someone had been stabbed a few blocks away, and we were walking in the general direction away from the scene. It just so happened that I also had a few knives on me, several of them matching the description of the one used in the crime. After about 45 minutes of pleading with the dumb-as-a-brick cop, I managed to convince him that I had been exploring the nearby abandoned powerhouse. My friend, however, chose to be snotty with the cop that was dealing with him, and he was handcuffed. All's well, though. The victim came by in another police car (Obviously whoever stabbed him didn't do a good job) and confirmed that we were not the ones who were all stabhappy.

I was shaking for the rest of the day. That was interesting.

A few days later, people I know kept stopping me wherever I went and asking what I was arrested for.

When busted by security I generally have my camera and tripod right there. I just say "Oh, I'm just snapping pictures of the place. Something of a hobby. If you like, I can just leave now."

About half the time they just say to be careful and they leave, the other times they politely tell me to vacate the premesis or the police will be called.
