*Omar ;)

And yeah, it is a nice cemetery. Very clean and calm.

I hate Fergus, personally, however. Too boring.

Was it Omar? I have seen it written as Omer twice, but never Omar. It's less common than Omar, but it's a popular first name in Israel.

Then again, I doubt the Gow family was Jewish.

I generally hover between Guelph and Toronto, and my family lives outside of town, so I guess I don't really have to worry about the boredom of living in Fergus itself. It's nicer from a distance, maybe?

In the letters and photos inside the home it's Omar Gow , unless his wife Nora couldn't spell haha!

And yeah, Fergus is much nicer from afar. Especially since we just had a tornado here a few weekends ago.

Edit: Oh, and I believe the Gow family is from German descent.

Weird. Here's one of the articles with the Omer spelling used (it's an interesting article anyway, if you're into the geography of the area!). http://www.earth.u...on/waton/f914.html

I believe you, I just wonder why this less-common spelling was used a few times.

As for the family origin – the Gow name is of Scots origin. http://www.houseof.../Gow-coat-arms.htm

Here's the point of origin for the Fergus Gow family. William Gow was born here in Ontario, but his father was born in Scotland.
http://www.rootswe...eers/gow_james.htm

It's nice to find another Fergus-area UE-er!

I was at my family's home when that tornado / storm happened. That was nuts. Tower and St. David both had huge trees down on them. It was my brother's birthday dinner, and I was supposed to go in to the Tandoori Grill to pick the food up. Took me an hour (and we only live about 5 minutes outside of the town).

It was so freaky. We never get tornados around here and it was right at the bottom of my street. Tore a bit of siding off my house, roof off my neighbors, couples powerlines nearly fell onto houses. Spooky.

And, as for Scottish origin, it makes sense yes. However, there was this one family that was married into the Gow's and had Gow and ... Pomnitz (which have a website, genealogy of the family etc. and the Pomnitz line was of royal German descent and some of the children were born of Pomnitz and Gow commingling

I don't exactly remember, but here is the Pomnitz website (who were related to the Gows)

Neat. So it's looking like the Pomnitz family connection came with Omar marrying Nora Pomnitz, then. Can't seem to find a date for that, but based on their ages, I'd guess it happened between 1912 and the early 30s.

As for the dance hall, my friend's mother has a co-worker who remembers her mother going there. She seems to think that the last time the place was used for a function would have been the early-to-mid 80s.

One thing I can't figure out is the precise time of construction on that house. Obviously, you can look at it and make a pretty decent guess... ;) but still. Do you have any information on when exactly it was built?

Absolutely no idea.
Still not even sure what it was they did there... Between the antiques, the medical supplies, and the meat hooks... I'm stumped about basically the whole place.

Sooo! I was really excited to explore this today and make this my first contribution to this board. However when I arrived on scene I found two vehicles there with men working on the roof! The truck was pulling a trailer full of equipment and there was a newer boat parked off to the side. I do believe this site is still active. Shame as I scouted it not two weeks ago and was very excited for my first entry.

This location is owned by the neighbours - just an fyi for anyone heading our there. No one lives there, but the article inside are spoken for. I have been trying to get permission from the family to enter as there is so much inside I would love to shoot.

Damn, this has to be one of the coolest places I have seen in a long time. I recently got into a house , that looked like they just walked away, photo albums of the family, and stuff still lay around, even clothes in the closets.
Thanks for sharing this one. Love it

This really does look like the most amazing place and I love the photos, thanks for sharing.
The whole thing with the medical supplies and the meat hooks and all the weird stuff just left there really puzzles me.

Photo #5 from the first post really gave me the willies because I have been in a room in an old house that looks just like that, minus the damage. Very creepy.

I belong to the family that owns the Round Room. It is far from abandoned. The owner lives next door and it is mostly used for storage. We have been having problems with people trespassing, vandalizing and stealing. We caught four teens there last week and they were warned. The next person to be caught will be prosecuted. A security system is being installed. Please return the letters and stay away. Thank you.

Never fear. I hear that there are still 2 unsecured entries to this location. One is a door in the Florida Everglades, and the other is in a sewer under St Louis.
