| | Detroit= Biggest Ghost Town? < on 3/30/2009 6:40 AM >
| | | Hey, just flipping through this weeks Time magazine. There is an article about how 1/3 of detroit is abandoned and getting worse with the decline of the three big automakers. I'm talking abandoned factories with over 1 million square feet! Is it really that epic up there now? Can anyone link me to recent detroit pics? Anyway, didn't see a link thread so here are some nice shots from the article: time.com/detroit One good thing about this economic collapse is it = more UE sites.

| | | It pretty much was when I was there a few months ago. I was amazed at the scale of abandonment. I had not seen anything like that before. Nice website, D'void. [last edit 3/30/2009 2:32 PM by Neophile - edited 1 times]

| | | When searching for info online about abandoned buildings in Detroit, brace yourself for that one horrible white power website. But yeah, the way you find abandoned buildings in Detroit is to drive around.

| | | Posted by D'void Yes it really is getting bad here, but then again it's been bad here for a looooong time so its just more of the same. Here are links...

It certainly has been going on for a lengthy period of time. Between 1964 and 1966 an average of 22,000 whites left the city each year. In 1967, the year of the riot that number jumped to 46,000 while a record 88,000 left in 1968. After that the numbers dropped albeit to 40,000 in 69 and the low 20,000's after that. Another interesting tidbit is in 1961 there were 150 murders in Detroit when its population was still hovering around 1.8 million people. In 1972 the number of murders had exploded to nearly 600.

Yeah it is really sad. My Grandpa grew up in Flint, bought his first house in Detroit and worked for GM his entire career. I've only been in Detroit a couple times but seeing the old homes, hotels and shops boarded up, burned out, I can only image what it use to be like. I bet it was a pretty awesome place to be back in the day (20’s, 30's, 40's, 50's)

And every time I have to drive through Ohio (to get somewhere else that's cool), I get sick. Nothing serious intended, just Michigan - Ohio rivalry commentary for the masses.

| | | Yeah things are pretty messed up around here. Since our meat and potatoes (the auto industry) started failing and we seemingly had no exit strategy, we're throwing darts wearing a blind fold. Hmm maybe Casinos are the answer... 5 years later they're all failing and for sale. Maybe if we build stuff, people will come... You can find a room at one of our 3 1/2 star hotels for $50 a night online if you go to the right site. The big 3 realize they're in hot water and need to make changes quick, but it may be too little too late. And it really is hard for the folks who were born and grew up here and have a hard time leaving, many of which will hold on until the last minute. Now I'm finally starting to understand the people I once called crazy who refused to leave Chernobyl. I get it now. But it's really too soon to start talking like, it's a slow death and regardless of the finally outcome; Detroits not going down without a fight. I can ensure you of that.

| | | Don't forget New Orleans and Gary aren't far behind. Both have been competing for highest homicide rate for a couple of years now. Youngstown probably falls in the category somewhere.

| | | You're a bit out of date, buster. If I remember right, Gary either barely made or didn't even make the top 10 for murder rate per capita last year. Guess they already killed everybody who's worth killing!
