You're a bit out of date, buster. If I remember right, Gary either barely made or didn't even make the top 10 for murder rate per capita last year. Guess they already killed everybody who's worth killing!
Yeah Gary is now a safe and cozy place to live! News to me, like this link that says Gary IN is #2 for homicides? I wish someone told those of us that live here!

A lot of the people I talked to in Gary said they felt safe in their neighbourhood but told me that a handful were quite dangerous. If I remember correctly Glen Park and the area around Ivanhoe were to be avoided.

I have been following a site for years now called sweet-juniper - it's a collaboration between a married couple living in Detroit although these days the husband posts more. He also happens to be an incredible photographer who documents through words and photos the decay of the city. There was an amazing series of photos he posted from the abandoned book depository there - saddening and awe-inspiring. I suggest everyone takes a look: http://www.sweet-j...abandoned%20places The link leads to his posts tagged with "abandoned places."

Eminem cut a great promo about Detroit for CBS' Final Four coverage. Really sums up the spirit well (or, it does to an outsider like me)

Lots of great pics there; I love before and after stuff. The text is, well, interesting. When did the California Zephyr ever serve Detroit?

It was a standard route to Chicago, it did come to Detroit at least on a handful of times. When doing research for the piece I did find pictures circa 1950 in B&W of it at the station. I don't believe it was a regular occasion though.

No, it wouldn't have been a regular occasion; perhaps they had the cars on display in Detroit on their way to delivery in Chicago from the Budd factory in Pennsylvania. The CZ was a Chicago-San Francisco train (Chicago-Oakland in later years). I'd enjoy seeing the picture if its available online.

Rail passenger traffic in Michigan declined as Americans found a love affair with the automobile, and Michigan in particular was served by many of the first Interstate highways. More so than most Eastern cities, much of Detroit's rail passenger traffic was short-haul, due to the state being shaped like a peninsula jutting up from the rest of the nation's east-west passenger routes, and as such was subject to intense competition from the automobile.

Freight traffic or the lack thereof did not contribute to the demise of the station.

Well it sounds like you know quite a bit on rail industry in Michigan. Are you just a buff, or a rail worker?

By the way, please don't take it the wrong way; I wasn't trying to nitpick your site, I was just trying to be helpful. I enjoyed them all. Keep up the good work!

Absolutely no offense taken. I really want the site to be as accurate as possible. PM if you would like, we can discuss it further.

Thanks too btw, those pictures took months of shooting and lots of planning.

Maybe they went back up in 2008, then. As of 2007, they weren't top 10 at all.

http://www.infople.../ipa/A0921299.html - #17 most dangerous

http://wiki.answer...r_cities_in_the_US - not even in the top 10 in this report

http://www.thereal...-america-for-2008/ - #7 for 2008 according to this one

http://mdfilter.bl...-still-really.html - not in the top 10 for 2007 (95 / 200,000 for New Orleans? Sheesh. That's like 1/1000)

Thank You so much for this thread!
Lately I have been on a research craze for Detroit. I'm amazed in the historical value of a city that is in decay.
I would like to see it for myself someday....

Just encase anyone was wondering if the recession is going away in Detroit...

Hunger Hits Detroit's Middle Class

DETROIT (CNNMoney.com) -- On a side street in an old industrial neighborhood, a delivery man stacks a dolly of goods outside a store. Ten feet away stands another man clad in military fatigues, combat boots and what appears to be a flak jacket. He looks straight out of Baghdad. But this isn't Iraq. It's southeast Detroit, and he's there to guard the groceries.

Southeast Detroit? That would be Windsor. I'm pretty sure that's not Windsor, maybe he's got his cardinal directions mixed up.

I didn't even catch that, you are correct.

I saw "south" and immediately figured (assumed) he was talking about Southwest Detroit.
