there are several abandoned silos... as for an abandoned paper mill?

All 3 of these are around Au Sable Forks.

...cemetary. The kids felt so bad about it being abandoned, they decided to clean it up a little.

Last semi-worthy photo I have…
This mill built in 1836 was converted into apartments, where I lived in 1991. Around ’98 the whole area flooded, and it’s abandoned again.

Anyone know why the smokestack of the Champlain Silk Factory has been there for so long?

actually, the last iteration of that place was a vending machine manufacturer. they closed in the mid-late 80's. The company that was hired to the demo of the property went bankrupt before they could drop the stack.

Whitehall is such a shithole... There is actually a pretty cool railyard south of there and an old dam on a backroad before you cross into Fair Haven, Vermont on US 4.
(i live about 34 miles north of Whitehall and work in Ticonderoga)

Do not proffer sympathy to the mentally ill. Tell them firmly "I am not paid to listen to this drivel. You are a terminal fool".
