| | | Some pics from scouting trip < on 1/19/2009 6:19 AM >
| | | I'm sure this won't be the most exciting post ever, but it feels good to get it out of my system. The quality seems to have suffered in the resizing, so they look better at: http://www.flickr....72157612686496909/ So my Dad and I (apparently this exploring thing is a genetic condition) spent the day driving around just far enough from home to travel roads we'd never traveled before. I had an idea of one place I definitely wanted to check out, and we found it (easier than I thought we would), but unfortunately there is a freakin' house RIGHT THERE. Literally, it's like they share a lot...can you imagine living beside this thing? There was a dog barking like mad the whole time.
Then we drove around and jotted down some places to check out more towards summertime. Just as dusk was falling we found a place we're really excited about getting into hopefully, but I'm a shorty and there's just toooooooo much snow. I settled for taking pics from the car, for now.
We saw the easiest entry of all at the same time as we had to leave to get home. We will be back.
Gawd...can't it just be June, already!?!??!

| | | I love the first location, it looks like some crazy huge castle. Good find definitely. It's unfortunate that someone decided to live near there though, lol. And yeah, I feel your pain, snow can be an obstacle in every aspect of life.

| | | Certainly it's an exciting post. Great finds! That first one, the castle-looking one, do you think there's enough stability on any existing floors to make it a safe interior exploration? Looks pretty hollow inside...

| | | I really like the look of the second place... the big log along the top of the front wall, the great textures in the wood door. Nice shots. I'm looking forward to what you post after going back to feed the blackflies in June.

| | | Wow! Thanks for the great feedback everyone. I feel sort of intimidated because I'm really only starting out, even though it's been a lifelong itch. I was purposely vague about locations because I'm not quite sure (according to the unwritten rules) when it's best to geotag it, and when it's best to keep it hush, and everything in between. The first building was so exciting to me, because I've lived just over an hour away from it my whole life and had no clue it was there. I found it on the town website while I was try to Google my way through finding out what would be a location close enough and worth it enough for me in the minimal amount of time for this stuff. Maybe I should just make a separate thread for the first location and tell you all about it there (katetron), but I know nothing about the other two. I'll have to do it this evening though because my little daughter is making posting difficult at the moment. Oh and fedge, I'm not even sure there are floors in there, but I'd like to get a heck of a lot closer than I did. Thank goodness for 15x zoom on the camera though.

| | | I was at the first location in late fall 08. It's the girls'Indian Residential School. The boys' school was right across the street, and you can still see the stone wall that bounded the property. The girls' school was gutted by fire. The boys' school was demolished several years ago.

| | | I guess I'll just flesh out the details of what Photoseeker posted. Location 1 was St. Joseph's Native Residential School for girls, and as Photoseeker said, the boys school was across the street. The school was built in 1916 on land purchased by the Jesuits, and the school was run by the Daughters of the Heart of Saint Mary. St. Joseph's closed in 1962, as native children were encouraged to integrate into the co-existing community schools and enrollment dwindled. (The boys school had closed in 1958.) In 1981, it was gutted by fire, but I'm glad the shell remains, and so far seems that it will stay there. Unfortunately, the boys school was demolished in 2004. We could see the base of the stone wall Photoseeker mentioned, despite the snow and there was a monument of some sort we'll be checking out once we can get to it. I'm puzzled about the house and other small buildings that seems to be on the property...any insight into that, Photoseeker? When I look at the aerial view it seems even more like it is actually on the same lot, but things are hard to tell when they are snow covered or a crappy satellite image. I added this shot too the Flickr set...that's not a road, that's his driveway.

I am really hoping it's a dry spring so I can beat the black flies out there, but even if I don't...all those itchy welts will be worth it to get inside that little old house. Editted for clarity. [last edit 1/20/2009 2:48 AM by Wander Woman - edited 1 times]

| | | Given the snow we already have, hope dims for a dry spring. But these places look so interesting I would probably brave the little biters too, just to get a look-see inside.

| | | Well I'm going to be optimistic and assume the snow will start melting fast during the mild, sunny March we're going to have. Then April will be sunny and not too rainy. Voila! We're poking through rickety old cabins in May and not sinking up to our knees in mud. That's the plan, anyway. I know...I won't hold my breath.

| | | I too am planning to go back out in spring. As I understand it, it's a native person who's living there. I don't know the whole story as no one was home when I was there in the fall. I will be approaching them for permission to wander the ruins, as I didn't feel comfortable accessing them with the trailer in such close proximity. Roseanne, (and other Sudburianites) perhaps we should go as a group...

| | | Can't guarantee "I'm in" because I don't have all that much free time, but definitely interested. My whole family wants to go now. lol My Dad and I were planning on going back with my sister, because we're both really shy and were to chicken shit to go knock on the door and ask, but my sister has no such issues. Then my mom was looking at the census records they have on their town site and noticed some names she's found for her family in her geneology stuff, so now she wants to go poke around town, too. We had no idea all this time, but it's actually a good place for a whole day outing...there's the Marina, a scenic trail, a lookout, so many photo ops...and all this time we've just been driving right through without a thought.

| | | On a historical note, as I understand it, the land was purchased and the schools built by the same folks who occupied our other favorite stone shell in Wikwemikong. After fire destroyed the day school there, a decision was made to focus on consolidation and expansion of the outreach to the natives for assimilation into "white society". Those familiar with the abuse of native children that has been the topic of much discussion with regard to the residential schools, this is one of the very few of them still standing.
