Survival Kits

What do you think about them?
Do you bring them along for your explorations?
In case one gets stuck somewhere, having some basic medical/food/fire means might make a difference while waiting for rescue.

I've got one in my truck in case I break down in the middle of nowhere.

As for exploring, I don't think it's necessary.

Instead of bringing survival kit, it would be a lot better idea to inform someone reliable where you are going. And if you have not contacted him in agreed time limit, he would get you help.

Bringing small first aid kit is always a smart thing. Some compression bandages etc.

I try to minimize the amount of stuff I carry on explorations so I can move with as little encumbrance as possible. So the tactical escape kit? Not so much, because really, you're not going to need it 98% of the time. However, band aids, duct tape, benadryl, and ace bandages are never a bad idea, as long as you keep your kit small. I might avoid carrying fire starters if you're exploring buildings. You don't want your exploration to be misconstrued as attempted arson (though I guess you might be able to justify a lighter if you also have a pack of cigarettes). As for food, a granola bar in the pocket is always a good idea, more food for longer trips. Hungry people are far more likely to make stupid decisions than people whose brains aren't lacking nutrients.

I'm curious, what kind of bags do you usually use to carry stuff around?

I can usually fit everything in my cargo pants on short, easy trips. For mid-length explorations I'll strap a small fanny pack over my shoulder to carry stuff. Be warned though, fanny packs aren't exactly inconspicuous, and I don't recommend them for any high-profile locations. Backpacks are okay, but I rarely have enough stuff with me to justify using one.

Nope. Too much stuff to pack... less room for camera gear and beer.

I just take a phone and a friend. Plus whatever survival gear is invariably in the trunk of my car. Tools, first aid kit, etc.

As always, horses for courses. I vary rarely carry a medkit but there are places I would not go without one. Say, for example, I was cycling through the Mongolian desert exploring abandoned Soviet airbases then I would certainly carry a medkit. Probably a Russian one, in Russian, that I couldn't read. That would be prudent.

I usually carry one because I have been known, on occasion, to be completely uncoordinated. There. It's said.

No bag for me normally. Just my tripod, camera, extra films, lightmeter, flashlight, and mobile phone.

If I take a bag I normally take my photo backpack, or my courier bag.

Only when I go camping, and it consists of an axe and a knife, no need for anything else.

Do something like that, but build your own. Cheap and effective!

Edit:

Just built mine...

$4 Greatland imitation Nalgene from Target.
Box of multi-sized bandaids.
small spray bottle with peroxide.
small spray bottle with alcohol.
gauze.
keychain flashlight.
matches.
small candles.
garbage bag x2 (Poncho, warmth?)

Total cost... about $20?

As an urban explorer and an wilderness explorer I thought I might share my "survival kit" with you all. Its not so much of a survival kit as it is a "when shit hits the fan kit".

Most important thing you need to survive in an emergency: WATER
always bring way more than you need.
Duct tape
super glue (better than band aids for bad cuts)
Lighter and some dry paper (to make a fire)
Knife
some strong nylon string
small length of rope
some candy or granola bar
any medication you might need
back-up cell phone (trakphone or the like)

Some things I might add: Flares, extra flashlight, OTC painkiller, ACE bandage, Shiny survival blanket, gauze band aids etc, bug dope, collapsible shovel, antiseptic, needle and thread.

That's about it. I carry a first aid kit made out of an old nylon and plastic "pocket". I carry it in my backsack. I rarely go on an adventure without it as it seems to be when you think you'll never use it, is when you'll need it the most.

I've used the kit when my rental car was stuck in the desert, when i was stranded in a sailboat on lake Erie, lost hiking, and for all those times when you really wish you had a lighter or knife and didn't have one. Also, a knife in a first aid kit is much less likely to be construed by the police as a weapon.

As for my full UE kit, check the relevant thread. (:

Always bring condoms.
Seriously.
Unlubricated condoms are uber-useful.
If forgot about the whole tide goes out/tide comes in thing . . . .
Condoms are a great way to waterproof your camera and lenses.

I'm thinking perhaps unlubricated condoms would be best for camera gear Oh, wait, that's what you said. As you were, then.
