I usually dont chime in on posts like these. When anything becomes mainstream it becomes mundane You just have to remember why you do it and forget everything else. Its like when you hear a song for the first time when you buy an album and then months later it becomes a single on the radio. Ahhh I hate that. But to me the song will always be mine and I will always remember how I felt when I first heard the song and why it meant so much to me. The one thing I can say is I have meant some amazing people from UER that I probably wouldn't have otherwise. I am grateful for that. Just keep doing what your doing. I enjoy your rants for the most part. [last edit 5/13/2008 4:38 PM by suicidepactphoto - edited 1 times]

It's about what I expected. The people that are old enough to understand the concept will get it. Those that don't will say it's just elitist dribble and what not because well, that's all they got. I think it's pretty shameful when people who claim to be interested in something don't care to know how it was and use that to see where it might all be going. I didn't know Ninj all that well but I suspect he'd roll over in his grave knowing what UE became. Go ahead people, flame away, you have nothing better to do.
|
Yes I am old enough understand it and enjoy it, thank you. Brings back the memories of being able to hang with more than few friends in the park and not be considered a dangerous gang. Riding my skateboard was a kid thing, not a reason to call the cops on me. Seeing what that old building was all about was just "Hey Mildred the skinny girl from Madison St. is poking around with nothing better to do again."
A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind. |

kid thing? I rode my until I was in my late 20s and my body was old and broken. I remember this guy who used to call the cops on my for riding my skateboard outside infront of my apt. all the kids in the hood used to steal and rob people, and all I was doing was riding a skateboard. I remember he got evicted from his apartment and I spent a good hour laughing at him and telling him god was punishing him for being a jerk.

I hate how quickly people just forget things these days. I mean, who here still remembers that time a couple of years ago when the whole earth blew up? You don’t? When they put us all in the big space ark? And they brought us to this planet? And the government said not to tell the stupid people because. . . .

Well, I knew him quite well and I hate it when people use his death as a way to make their opinions sound more meaningful. Ninj was a firm believer in letting things go as they go. He was never one to claim a location was "his" -- he didn't even like hiding information. He was not elitist and tried to get along with everyone peacefully. The very nature of his zine (public, open to all, and readily available for a nominal cost) is an indication of how he felt about it all. Ninj was one of the founders of OPEX '94, the first truly international explore-a-thon, made possible by the internet. Don't reinterpret Ninj's views and opinions to match your beliefs. It is akin to spitting on his grave. -av

Hey don't get panties in a bunch. If I wanted to spit on his or anyone else's grave i'd go do it. He got along well with people, that's all I'm saying... look around you - look at the international peeing contest ue has become to some degree. A lot of people don't get along with others... they're too busy trying to one up each other. You're kinda trying to do that right now, but I'll let it slide. if you want to say 'international' you might be right as far as opex, if you want to say 'first modern day ue gathering' as I did, I'd say you're wrong. A lot of people came from far & wide that day in 2001... there wasn't even a uer back then. I believe ninj tucked that into his timeline of ue events... ah, but this all exactly what I speak of when I say ue has gone to pee. you're arguing semantics with me. you can't prove to me 'ue' isn't crap now by arguing with me in this thread. If anything, it just furthers my point... see what I mean? gimme a call next time you're around. we can bicker over the death of ue over some beer. there might be some better stuff to break into around as well.

I didn't really want to post in this thread at all, but the Ninj comment prompted me to. As for your article, it was well written. As for your opinions regarding UE being crap: I think UE is what each person makes it. It means something different to everyone, and everyone gets something different back out of it. Even just on UER, there's such a huge cross-section of people from different cultures, gender, social classes, educations, etc... you can't generalize and think that what UE means to you is what it might mean to someone else. I was out exploring last night. It was a place I'd been many times before, but it was nice to see it again, see what was different, see the new entries on the guestbook. I don't need to "remember" when UE was how I like it, because it fulfills my needs in all the shapes and sizes it comes in, new and old. I enjoy exploring with a hardened veteran who'se seen it all just as much as I enjoy taking a virgin into their first abandonment (or whatever). Hell, even just the way people's eyes light up when you tell them what you do for fun, gets me every time. -av [last edit 5/14/2008 2:57 AM by Avatar-X - edited 1 times]

That explains alot of the bizarre behavior around here. I mean, I thought this website was potentially an experimental space for socially challenged ppl to try out coping mechanisms before moving out to the real world? No? So much for my thesis! The truth is once you take something out of its real environment (such as being outside and examining the world firsthand) vs.condensing and homogenizing it into a space where it really can't exist naturally, yeah its gonna start getting weird around here. And that's where it gets amusing too...all the rules that emerge from little cliques about 'standards' to cyber dick waving contests by people who have serious interpersonal issues and my personal favorite, camera debates. We are not really talking about UE anymore because as others have noted not many share, and for the reasons of which are obvious-- there are too many people into something like this, and that's what's really changed here -- NOT the hobby. With more people, you get more kinds of ppl too.
