I'm not a photographer by any stretch of the term, but #3 is a nice shot. Cool looking fan. I don't get the whole "lightpainting" thing. It was explained to me once and I think I was like, "Oh yeah, makes sense," but lied.

You betcha

I absolutely love the first two, but something about the third just seems boring to me. Like purple chalk dust just happened to get blown around on the ground below the fan. But in general I really love what you've done with the light; it makes the cold machinery of number 2 look quite literally freezing! Very appropriate and good job.

Oh, I'm sick of doing Japanese things. In jail they made us be in this dumb Kabuki play about the Forty Seven Ronin, and I wanted to be Oshi, but they made me Ori!

haha. funny, but semi true. the side painting of the magenta didn't work exactly how i wanted. i think the shot would have been a little better if i had done the magenta more on the left half of the fan because you can just barely see it on the top and left side.

I think from a technique perspective, all 3 are quite well done, especially if you're just starting up with it (I'm assuming that since you're actively seeking critique). I tend to agree with others who find #3 to be the least intriguing shot of the group because of the subject matter, but I do really like the soft purple effect on the floor.

All in all, I'd say your technique is quite solid...you're hot on the heels of "Lost America"!

actually i think he's quite talented & creative photographer, but i am actively looking for a way to make these photos more my own. it's hard to be original with light painting, in a lot of the places many others have photographed, but right now i'm just having fun doing it. it makes me work at my photography skills and i am being challenged as well. i've been a photographer for years, but in the last few months have started urban exploration and light painting...

thanks for all the comments.

Sounds like me...I shot 4x5 & 35mm for years when I was a kid back in the 70's and 80's, but gave up photography altogether from the early 90's until last summer, when I saw Troy's work. I had never light-painted either, but it inspired me to get back into it!

Speaking of Troy, what is the main element in his work? The subject and composition. The lighting is an adjunct, not the reason.

Turn your work around, and the same enlightenment and satisfaction may arrive? Neko.

True, but when you're trying not to be a Troy clone, what's the first thing you think about?

it'd be nice if we could all light paint without getting compared to troy, because very few of us can measure up, but the truth is, he is the front-runner and he is good at what he does.

it's like going on american idol and singing a whitney houston or mariah carey song and not getting compared to them. it won't happen. they are extremely talented and they are legends. we just have to be prepared for comparison if you emulate the original artist.

Harold Bloom calls it the anxiety of influence. It's the idea that we're influenced by/steal from all the great artists that came before us, because even when we consciously try to not be like someone, that person is still very much a part of our thought processes, perhaps even more than when we ARE trying to be like him/her.

Light painting isn't strictly limited to using color gels to light a scene. I paint in most of my night pictures, but rarely use color. I consider light painting the only possible means of taking a picture in a total dark situation where there is no ambient light, besides using a camera mounted flash. Consider some examples of light painting, where I used nothing but a bare flashlight:

So little ambient light it would have taken a 20 min exposure and never turned out this way.

Zero ambient light, in the engine room of a ship. Lit with bare flashlight only.

Added light to lower regions using a bare flashlight. upper regions lit with waning daylight.

I consider all of the above pics as 'light painted'.

I think too many people say Lost America is the definition of light painting. Troy is very good and a really fun guy to shoot with, but there is so much more to do with light painting than just Troy's style. I've been on a few trips with Troy and learned a lot from him. But Troy's style is Troy's style. It's not my style. I use some of his techniques, but usually I do my own thing. I don't go around comparing myself to him either. As a joke, Hoverfly and I, when in a situation where we wouldn't quite know how to approach lighting a scene, would ask each other, WWTD? What Would Troy Do?

youonlyliveonce: sorry I jumped in on your critique thread, but it did get a little off topic. Sounds like you're having a great time light painting and rediscovering photography. Awesome! That's my story too. That's Noel's story too. It's a good one.

To sum it up, start working with a bare flashlight in the beginning. There's a LOT you can do without even adding color. As you get better, start thinking about accentuating certain areas with color. Master the bare flashlight and experiment with different color temps of light before you move on to gelled flashes, etc.

Long exposure time and a flashlight or other light source. While the shutter is open you run your light over what you want to be lit up in the final exposure

grit your teeth in the face of fear. self repression is the true sign of a coward, toss your inhibitions to the wind.
