as of now anything posted on the forum shows up in a Google search, do you think it shouldn't. doing this would keep info one step further out of the hands of unwanted people.

I dont like that if say someone is searching for places to scrap metal from and somehow my name comes up.
I dont really think its likely but still get a bit paranoid about it.
Edit - I have also noticed that if I search someone elses name, a link to mine comes up. So, say for example cops are searching for one of the pennhurst vandals, my name comes up even if I have had zero interaction with said individuals.

Oh, it can be easily prevented. It's a little text file, and it tells search engines not to spider the site. And by and large they listen. In many cases it's in their interest, to avoid indexing lots of useless crap on large sites that will just clog their results. It can be set up so that they only spider specific parts of the site, so the site could still show up in google, just not individual threads.

It seems like if this is possible, it would be in everyones best interest.
If for anything, it would make it harder for the vandals and metal scrapers. If you google abandoned building, a link to UER comes up. That just gives said individuals another resource for copper.

Personally, when I've been looking for info on something on Google and I find a search result that sounds interesting, if I click it and it requires me to subscribe to something or register for something in order to view it, I usually just forget it.

I agree with your first paragraph. However, I don't think that making the forums nonspiderable or requiring login to view forum threads would necessarily deny explorers the opportunity of discovering UER.ca. I think the concern is mainly just discouraging vandals and scrappers from using some of the more specific information (found in the DB and the forum) as a resource for what they do.
In the broader sense, you're right, though. A lot of it just comes down to personal responsibility. If you don't want vandals to know where your favorite location is, then don't post specific info about where it is.

Please. As soon as possible.
But more seriously, as mentioned the robots.txt file can be made selective, so that the core pages of the site are indexed while the forum threads are made off-limits. There are also no shortage of urban exploration websites that link here, so no matter what is done about the google, connections will still be made.
