There are also no shortage of urban exploration websites that link here, so no matter what is done about the google, connections will still be made.

Google says there are about 11,700 ;) Not neccesarily all UE sites, but that many links to it

In my humble opinion the best solution would be only allow registered members the ability to view the forum and attempt to prune non-active accounts at the same time to cut down on lurkers. In fact I cant see anything negative about doing this. If the argument comes up that people like to look at photos then they can hit up Flickr...

But in the end it is Av's decision and he's been clear that he's all for full disclosure.

Sigh.

It amazes me the amount of idiocy in this thread.

First, UER already has a robots.txt. You can see it right here: www.uer.ca/robots.txt You can clearly see what is allowed for search engines to see on UER, and what isn't.

Second, only threads marked "Public" by the creator of the thread (they have a little icon of an eye next to them) show up in search engines. It's the same exact threads that any person could see without registering for the site. Private threads, private boards, and non-public locations in the Location Database do not show up in Google.

Third, no, I am not changing this. I have no problem whatsoever with public threads and locations being found in Google. UER isn't some secret forum about building bombs or hijacking planes, there is no reason to hide the entire site. Never mind the obvious reason that millions of people each year find UER thanks to search engines, some of whom become valuable contributing members.

Unfortunately this means that all threads in the Main forum are indexable. All threads in the Photography forums are indexable. All regional threads that someone else has decided to post as "public" are indexable, no matter the wishes of those users who might want to reply to them.

It's disingenuous to say that we have a choice about what is public and private. In many cases, there is no choice.

Some sacrifies have to be made in the interests of not being a "secret squirrel club".

UER provides plenty of places (plus you can create your own) where you can discuss things that might otherwise go into "Main" or "Photography" in private. Most photos posted in "Photography" are freely available (and indexed) on that person's private website or Flickr page, anyway.

I have no interest in turning UER into a registration-required, members-only site. The Full Member system does that job just fine and provides enough security.

As for threads in regional areas, a thread can be made private after it has been posted if requested (ask a mod), if the subject suddenly is deemed to be sensitive. Any basic members who posted in the thread up to the point where it was made private, continue to have access to the thread, but Google and other basic members are locked out.
