The only time I was ever caught I was crouching in the brink of a hill, it was dark.

As soon as I saw the lights I dropped and rolled (it was so instinctual, kinda weird).

I then realized that the hill was much bigger than I originally thought. I slid on my stomach a good 20 feet down, trying desperately to grab onto anything I could. Managed to stop, find a footing and hold onto grass/rocks.

It was only after the 5 minutes the cops spent looking for us that I eased up enough to realize the hill I slid down was basically a junkyard. Everything from the site (old rehab) had been thrown down, rusty metal bed frames, stoves, glass, doors.

Really lucky I didn't screw myself up big time. My advice is to not do what I did. Or at least look before you leap.

So were you caught caught, or spotted but managed to evade via suicidal tetanus dodging?

it's probably been said already, but I figure that in most cases ( in western countries at least ) it's best to not run away when they spot you. either stay in place, or go to them. stay polite and don't yell at them. tell them you just take pictures because you're interested/writing an article/doing a school assignment. You can also always play dumb: "oh, I did not know it wasn't allowed to come in here", or, "I did not see the warning signs". the latter will most likely not work if there are signs all over the place, but if they're higher up, or lower, you can always claim you didn't see them.

just my 2 cents.

Planning ahead and working out a plan when exploring is the best way to elude the police or security. Come up with a plan, investigate the site beforehand, and learn all possible entrances and exits.

When confronted by police, I've found that the best policy is to simply be honest. I maintain a respectful tone and answer questions truthfully. Generally, I show the officer my camera equipment and explain that I'm here taking pictures.

This policy has gotten me out of a potentially hairy situation. I was with two other explorers, and we were caught coming out of an abandoned hotel The police, citing probable cause, searched us and found some shove knives we were carrying. After explaining ourselves and showing some of our photographs, the police let us go with a lecture instead of taking us in for trespassing or breaking and entering. If we lied or attempted to run, I'm sure they would have arrested or detained us.

Here's a story. Me and 2 friends had tripods and SLRs. I decided to show them the McCormicks Candy factory here in London. I've been in there 5 times already. We parked our car in front of this womans house on a street beside the factory. I remeber she was standing out front of her drive way letting her dog go to the bathroom on the grass and she gave me this quizicle look as if "I don't know if they're up to any good but it looks really neat". She saw our equipment and tripods and our respirators...

We made our way to the factory, crawled through the hole in the fence which led us to the back parking lot of the factory. We took exterior shots of it before making our way inside. We spent like 30 minutes photographing the main floor inside before we went to the roof. I decided we go to the roof first to get some air and then explore the rest of the 5 floors. We get out onto the roof, it was sunset, I was setting up my tripod on the north side of the roof to take a shot until I spotted 3 fucking cop cars on the parking lot. Something inside of me sank. I ran over to my friend who was on the other end of the roof taking shots to tell him. Then just as I was telling him my friend Jerry ran over from the opposite side of the roof and told us that he had seen 4 cop cars on the parking lot, then we all saw a PATTY WAGON racing down dundas street with it's lights and sirens on, they had the building surrounded. Something inside of me definitely sank. So we all decided to surrender and went downstairs... On the way down we told each other to keep calm, remain confident, slow deep breaths and show no sign of guilt.

The 3 of us opened the back door and made our way onto the parking lot and began walking toward the cops who were standing outside of the gate on the parking lot. One of them yelled at us to get over there, as we continued to walk toward their direction... "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU IDIOTS DOING?!?!" I replied "We are doing a photography shoot , sir" and my friends replied the same. There was like 7 of thme standing there and they kept mocking us and it felt like they were going to beat our asses, seriously. Just then, we noticed the K-9 was wandering around behind us on the parking lot barking and sniffing around, my friend James (who was standing right beside me) was like "OMG, is that dog going to attack us? Please officer I don't want this to get out of hand, we were just photographing". Officer says "Don't move, show no sign of nervousness and he won't attack...!" The K-9 came up, started padding him down and sniffing him, my friend had a Roach in his pocket and the dog started to bite his outer thigh, and started tugging, my buddy was almost in tears, I almost pissed myself I didn't think I would be able to hold myslef, the cops were laughing at him... Then the K-9 cop guy came from behind and signaled the dog to stop...

So after, there was the one officer who was the inquisitor "WHAT THE FUCK IS PHOTOGRPAHY TO YOU?!?!?! THERE'S NOTHING IN HERE TO PHOTOGRAPH!!!" and the other cops were talking in the background like they were bullies and shit. and I said "Sir, we find beauty in abandoned architecture, there's alot of unique machines and designs to photograph in there, I can assure you." Then he said "NO! I'LL TELL YOU WHAT YOU LITTLE FUCKS WERE DOING! YOU WERE SPRAY PAINTING YOUR TAGS IN THERE AND PHOTGRAPHING YOUR OWN TAGS! AND DON'T FUCKIN' LIE BECAUSE I HATE LIARS!!!" Us 3 looked at each other all confused and I blurted out "YOU WANT TO SEE MY PICTURES THAT I JUST TOOK? I guarantee you all that our pictures contain nothing of that nature. Our motto is to take photographs and leave behind footprints." So the other cops demanded to see our shots. We each showed each cop our shots from out cameras, and as i was showing the cop my pictures i was going into extreme depth about HDR photography and that's what I was doing, blah blah blah, and the cop behind him was like "OK... We don't need for the narration!" With a chuckle on his face as if we were stupid. and I said "We may look young, but that doesn't mean we're vandals. We don't believe in that type of thing." Then the one cop was like "YOU FUCKIN' DUMB IDIOTS, HOW OLD ARE YOU GUYS ANYWAYS?!?!?" We answered, we are all 23 and he's like "23? 23... 23... YOU'RE ALL FUCKIN STUPID FOR COMING HERE, YOU'RE ALL GETTING CHARGED FOR BREAKING AND ENTERING, HOW FUCKIN' STUPID IS THAT?!?!?"

Anyways... I offered for them to search us all, I tried to be the one in charge of the whole situation, proposing everything, to show them we had nothing to hide. They found nothing on us, and the cops who accused us wrongly left probably feeling like liars deep down inside.

We all got off with $65 fines... But I'll tell you all something right now. It doesn't matter how old you are, how expensive and professional you and your equipment looks. That doesn't mean shit to most cops, seriously, we need to take this into consideration and realize the reality. An asshole cop is more likely to charge you for tresspassing or Break and Entering, but there was so many of them that the cop we went up to initially was in a good mood and wrote us off...

The next time we get caught, we will get charged with either trespassing or Break and Entering... They told us that the system will make sure we learn our lessons if it happens again. I've never been to jail, and I'm afraid to, so I am forced to give up UEing in the city, I don't feel so weary about the country...

Boo....

Other than your one friends moment of stupidity, that was a really good story. And you got off easily, even though it did use up your get-out-of-trouble-free-once card.

I do have to admit that I wasn't nor were my friends too concerned about what people thought at the time. I guess you could say that we were confident enough to not worry, we weren't doing anything wrong. The laws and the system defines what's right and what's wrong in our society. But I'll tell you one thing, the system has no morals... The system only sees black and white. Just my 2 cents.

I am considering to look into draining, now that I'm forced to slow way down on exploring abandoned places. However, I'm not so apprehensive about exploring abandoned places out in the country (or in the city with owner permission), it's just a matter of having a car is all... I truly love the concept and experience of exploring but sometimes we just have to take a step back and ask ourselves at times "Is this really worth jail time, or a trespassing/B&E charge?..."

It really hurts deep down inside. I just started getting into this new world of Urbexing and now it seems that it is somewhat short lived. I'm now limited in how I can approach things.
