| | | Use your head means exactly that. It seems to be in short supply these days. It also means that there is no single way to do things. Some things might be acceptable in certain situations, while in others it may not. If you can't use your head, you've already handicapped yourself. Might be time to find a new hobby.

It is up to the individual explorer to decide what they should or should not do. The +footprints/-photos thing is fine, but remember you've no more right to inflict your ethics on a site than you have a right to be there in the first place.

| | | Posted by White Rabbit Ugh. I'm not even going to bother arguing the anti-stealing/anti-B&E point of view, because, frankly, UER is just chock-full of child-minded people who don't give a rat's ass how their actions affect other people and who will make excuses for those actions until THE END OF TIME. I will say, however, that I wish to God those of you that are pro-stealing, pro-graffiti, pro-breaking-your-way-in, etc., would shut the fuck up about it in public. Because people like that are the reason that the term "urban explorer" has an immediately negative connotation to people in authority. People like that are the reason that when cops or the like hear "urban explorer" they think of someone more like ryan and less like Ninj. The wisdom on breaking the "nothing but pictures, etc." philosophy should be: Don't do it. But if you're gonna do it anyway, for God's sake don't talk about it.

If we just let anybody do whatever they want to a site, then what's the point in trying to establish the hobby as being legit and using professional standards to raise the bar. I'm not inflicting my ethics on a site, I'm inflicting my ethics on myself, and hope that others adopt their own ethics to guide them. Hopefully peoples ethics and standards they use will overlap with one another's, which is ideal. It is my belief that UE should follow ethics/standards, which will help propel the hobby in a better image to the mainstream public and those in law enforcement. If you let the individual explorer decide what they should and should not do, than they may feel it's okay to smash the joint up, based and justified on their views that it was acceptable. If so, future explorers to the site are not going to get a quality experience based on some fool's behavior that preceded them. Also, we will be reading in the newspaper that some "urban explorer" broke windows, smashed pipes, took property, etc, because it makes good headlines despite the fact it puts down the hobby as a whole. Whether I feel I "have a right to be there in the first place" is irrelevant to what I do there. If one starts saying should I be anywhere that's abandoned or of interests to UE, than why do it (UE) or have a forum such as this? I'm not sure if you are indicating that if one is at a site of interest, then one can and should do whatever they want? Is this based on the assumption if one trespasses, than since they are breaking the law, they can trash and vandalize the place as well. Also, if you are going to quote me, please use the entire sentence or paragraph which I stated so that readers get an accurate picture, instead of incomplete blurbs and splices.

you tell me whats legit about ue and ill show you a flying pink elephant. its only legit when you have permission. period. am i missing something here? if i am please let me know. private property is exactly that. private. how do you have the right to be on someone elses property ever? by invitation is how. gently trespassing still has the word trespassing in it.

Dear Mr. Nomeus, If you don't think that urban exploration can be a legitimate hobby that people (other explorers, law enforcement, photographers, documentarians, historians, the general public, etc) can look up to, then maybe I can suggest other hobbies, say... vandalism, arson, burglary, breaking and entering, trespassing, and stealing candy from children. What I don't understand is how intelligent people can't seem to separate urban exploration from criminal activities. Urban exploring can definitely be legitimate if done with common sense and with a professional attitude. Getting permission is important, which is something I always strive for and advocate, but is not always the case in real life. Does that mean if one is unable to get permission, than all is lost? Not necessarily. You exhaust all avenues striving for the best solution to meet an objective. I don't know what you mean by "its only legit when you have permission. period." Does that mean UE cannot be done unless you are holding a permission slip, or else you are a bad person? Are all urban explorers bad, or just those who don't have the proper paperwork? By the way, who's talking about trespassing, gently or otherwise (is there violent trespassing?). I never advocated for trespassing. Urban exploring can/should get the positive reputation it deserves, but only if those that practice it now go about it in the right way. Have to go now, my pink elephant just landed and he wants some peanuts.

I bow to your intelligence. You add so much to the discussion! You seem to suggest that "first come first serve" is what the whole exploration thing is about. You've given me hours of deep thought on the subject. Thank you very much.

| | | If you do decide to write something, make sure that you put a date/year on it. Years from now (unless you wrote something truly profound) the most interesting thing will be the date/year that you wrote it. That being said, if you have stuff that you took from a location or "vandalizing equipment" (ie. spray paint etc) and you get caught you can get in trouble for more then just trespassing. Sometimes, depending on the site, I actually leave something in hopes that someone else will find it and either appreciate it in some way and leave it there or take it with them. Carpe Noctem!
