My First Set: Sunset on Summer

Hey there, UrbExers. Here's my first submission for your approval. Please, go easy on me. I've never taken a photography course in my life. I'm still trying to get the hang of composition and even manipulating the camera itself. I'm even tripod free at the moment. (money's tight, nothin's free) I'm shooting with a Fuji Finepix S5200 and post-manipulating with photoshop.
You should find the location to be familiar. Without further adieu. Please, play nice.

30 views, no comments... do they really suck that bad? I know it isn't a Kirkbride but a guy's gotta start somewhere.

5 Would be good if it were straight. 2 Would be pretty good as well if the sky wasn't so blown out. That HDR shot, how many exposures did you take?

Some of them are just tweaked in photoshop to give an HDR look: Warming filter + Curve manipulation produces a ghetto HDR look on some shots. I'm not even sure if my S5200 shoots RAW. I'm both a photo and a UrbEx noob so I've got a lot to learn admittedly. I've never taken a photography class in my life. I'm just going by eye... Thanks for the honest but not jerkish feedback.

Have patience with the replies. Lots of people look on here without commenting.

Looks like you're off to a very good start!

The ones you asked for advice on...

#12- this is an example of the lack of dynamic range in digital cameras. Actually it's even pushing it for film, you'd have to do it perfectly to get it all. To get all of this exposed properly, you'll need to take multiple exposures. HDR would be worth a try, but you could probably also take care of this with bracket blending.

#15- I'm still trying to think of suggestions for composition on this one. Not knowing what's outside the frame makes that a little hard... as well as the fact that I've had a few beers. I think this one may work better in landscape orientation, there's just not enough space toward the right side of the frame to draw the viewer's eye along the lines. Also, the foreground is blurred. 90% of the time it's a very bad idea to blur your foreground. There's only some certain specific circumstances where you'll want to blur the foreground. When in doubt, make sure you've got a SHARP foreground!

As I said, it looks like you're off to a good start, and keep at it!

Yes have patience with replies. You will have to post several sets before people will start to regularly post in your topics.

With that said, some of these aren't bad. My favorite was #4 just because of the warm colors and the way the shadows fall on the wall.

I think the boat one could have turned out a lot cooler if you hadn't cropped the picture so low. I would go back to photoshop with the original image and then crop it in a way so that the boat isn't on the center of the image. Things look a lot better when just slightly off center.

Some of the shots are a little blurry but you've explained that, get a tripod you shots become so much better, trust me

On the botched HDR one. I don't know how you did that, so I can't help you.

Keep shooting and posting

2 is very nice (sky is a bit blown out but he!)

check out other styles of other photographers and try to figure out what you want to do and then try to get good results and ask if you're getting enough result.

shooting a lot helps a lot!

Me too. I also know zilch, but know what I like to shoot and what looks good to me.

Lots of looks but no comments means one positive thing- you dont suck.

I think there are actually several places on the island with squatters. 2-3 i'd guess. The red house DEFINITELY... the bed upstairs was made... in another, the fridge still worked and there were 3 bottles of gatorade in there and in another cabinet there were poland spring bottles of vodka and whiskey. On the sofa of that camp was a Notice to Quit dated July 2007.

As far as HDR... there are no HDR's here. I've only tweaked some of the photos to look as if they were HDR to my eye. I'm not even sure if my Finepix S5200 shoots RAW's. Thanks for all the input.

I think you have a very good start, just study up on how others post process their photos and try to do some of it yourself. Good Job!

well.... I like comments from people who don't know shit about photography because whenever you're gonna show your pictures, chances are that 90% of the people who'll see them don't know anything about photography.

....hmmm.... sounds kinda commercial

I ran into this skinny sketchy guy on a black bike in the morning out there, he must've circled our crew no less than 4 times over the course of 45 minutes... finally i said fuck it and took the group to the bridge end just to get away from the fucker... I'd guess he's a squatter too.

I'd assume at least 3 of those places have squatters. ESPECIALLY red house and pink house.
Pink house had 3 gatorade bottles some booze and electricity!

I'm not normally one to like lens flare, but the rays in #8 really paint that picture with color. What a happy accident.

Looks like you're improving with the newer stuff.
