There used to be a thriving fishery in that sea, now it has so increased its salinity that it is essentially dead. All because they wanted to divert water from its tributaries to supply ill concieved agricultural ambitions.

Yeah, the Virgin Lands Project in the USSR was the rationale for draining the Aral Sea. It's even worse with the combination of the salinity, collapse of the USSR, and the tests at Vozrozhdeniya Island.
