| | | i personally think there is a huge different between vandalism and graffiti. when someone takes bright orange spraypaint and writes something like "pot" or "weed" or some random swear, that is vandalism. when you go somewhere where someone has clearly put a great deal of effort in making some words look sweet, then that is art (more or less). i personally enjoy walking into an old building and finding some cool-looking writing on the wall (its even cooler when you find like a whole room that is just covered by paint). but on the otherhand is overkill when a whole building is just full of it

Actually, graffiti of any kind that is done without the property owner's permission is vandalism… Whether or not said vandalism has artistic merit is an entirely different debate--the question of whether or not something is vandalism is an objective one, easily answered by reading local criminal code, the question of whether or not that vandalism is "art" is much more subjective and could be debated back and forth for eons (and probably will be) blacklines

| | | Like blackhawk sez, this has been addressed at length, and if you perform a simple search of the word "graffiti" you'll see the previous debates on the topic. It's a fairly divisive issue on this site, and one that is not likely to be resolved.
C'est en faisant n'importe quoi qu'on devient n'importe qui. It's always easier to get forgiveness than permission. |

Graffiti can be vandalism if the place is wrong.

I dont mean to push a semantic issue, nor do I want to get into an ethics debate about graffiti but I feel as though this is important. Graffiti, by definition, is vandalism--if it isnt done on a public wall (ie: "on the streets") it is NOT graffiti... It may be done in the style of some sort of graffiti, but what separates graffiti from gallery or "fine" art is the context--without that, its just another painting. blacklines

| | | Re: Graffiti <Reply # 9 on 4/3/2007 4:48 PM >
| | | im not talking about the legal meaning, i'm talking about what people see as vandalism spitting on the ground is legally vandalism, do you think your a vandal when you spit on the ground? don't think so when people spray paint random crap like "weed" etc etc like i was talking about it, i consider that vandalism. while i dont think that someone who is trying painting cool stuff that isn't really offensive is a vandal, i tend to think of that more as graffiti. yes, they are both illegal and considered vandalism, but the difference is all in what you are thinking when you do it. ( guess?) sorry i'm not completely up to part on my vandalism laws :\

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |
