ARRESTED OR DETAINED BY AUTHORITIES?
< on 2/21/2007 4:33 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

This may have already been discussed at length at sometime in the past, and if so, I apologize for bringing it up again, but I think it is important we all familiarize ourselves with the very real possibility of "capture"! This new thread could easily be a forum unto itself if there are enough experiences out there to share. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN CAUGHT, DETAINED, ARRESTED, CHASED OR HAD TO HIDE FROM AUTHORITIES WHO WERE ACTIVELY LOOKING FOR YOU WHILE EXPLORING A SITE? (Or approaching a site; Or leaving a site.)

The old saying is: "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime." We must always consider the very real possibility of getting caught, and we should be prepared with some kind of a believable story that might let us get released when detained. The most likely charge would be Trespassing, a minor offence, yet one that could land you in jail, even if only briefly, and will leave you with a police record that could follow you the rest of your life. A great risk? No. Abandoned sites are seldom patrolled. But each situation is unique making some localities a far greater risk than others. I would like, those of you who will, to share your experiences in this regard, explaining the circumstances, what was said and what the outcome was.

What kind of story do you plan to tell the authorities should they find you? What has worked for you? What HASN'T worked for you. Many factors can effect how the authorities respond to you during their initial encounter, such as:
- How many of you are in your party, and were you all together, or did some 'get away'?
- How old are the members of your party?
- What did you have on you when you were detained? (ie. property belonging to the site; Cans of spray paint or paint stains on your hands or clothes; Photo and lighting equipment; "burglary tools" such as crow bars, lock picks, hammers, etc.; Weapons, and so forth.)
- Did they have to chase any of you to catch you, or did they find you hiding from them?
-Were you caught in the act of vandalism?

Depending on circumstances, a simple trespassing offence can quickly turn into a full fledged burglary and, if in posession of a gun (at least in my state) will automatically get you a mandatory seven year prison sentence!

You think it can't happen to you? Then you're deluding yourself. We really need to discuss this part of our uniquely satisfying hobby. I have much I'm willing to share on the subject and I believe I'm well qualified to do so, (which you will understand later if the discussion goes well) but I'd like to begin by hearing some of the stories you have to share about your encounters with 'the law' and how they turned out.

Any one game for this? It could save our butts in the future!

Everyone should read up on their states trespassing laws. In Georgia it's not Criminal trespassing unless you have intent to commit a crime, damage something, go on the property after being told you can't or remaining on the property after being told to leave. Also, possession of "burglary tools" with intent to use gets you 1-5 years in prison.

The truth usually works best. Cops don't enjoy hearing a bunch of bs. Cops can many times level more charges against you if you piss them off. Those same cops can also allow you to plead to a lesser offense without an expensive lawyer. The cops can also turn a ticket into an overnight lock up if your a prick.

If your packing a gun or burglary tools, why shouldn't a cop throw the book at you? There's no lawyer that's going to get a solid felony charge reduced to a municipal offense. Even a misdemeanor trespass charge is something you really don't want on your record.

I agree that cops can be your friend if you are caught, the key is being completely honest and not making their job any harder. I had a run in with Deputies last week while exploring a mill in south carolina and after running our ID's they told us to finish taking our pictures and be careful not to fall through a floor or something. :-p

Now I think I would probably give a (Rent a Cop) a hard time as they have no real ability to act on anything.

in my opinion they should be treated with the same respect as the police.
that 7 dollar an hour "rent a cop" has a much better relationship with the local law enforcement officers then we explorers do.
I dunno, I think its in our best interest to control the situation by keeping everyone calm. the rent a cop get amped and now he's on the phone to the police amping then up.
amped police & urban explorers = NOT good for the UE'r
not to mention treating him with respect could persuade him to NOT to pick up that phone and make that phone call, also you just might make a friend and be able to return to the site at your leisure (just remember to bring donuts)

eh,im 16 so getting busted isnt my biggest fear, its my parents reaction.

but i figure the cop wont take kindly to me if i run or behave like other teens.

honosty is the best i should think. i got caught semi ueing once(i was walking home from school and saw a site so i walked through) and some guy came out yelling at us,instead of running,i tried to talk my way out of it. it didnt work, but hes a moron. the cops were more kind.

Amped-up cops are no fun; many departments have a lot of resources they can call in, including K-9s. As someone pointed out before in another thread, a some of the 'rental cops' are real cops in some areas. Makes good sense not to push their buttons.

Did you try using our very helpful search feature? I did after reading this thread and I came up with 67 pages of stuff pertaining to arrests and what people have experienced, and get this, it only took a few keystrokes and a few seconds.

Please enjoy your time here, but also please use the search feature.

Seriously, number of problems with your approach:
- new member starts condescending thread
- thread name in all caps
- wants details and stories about close calls and police encounters, a topic some people are nervous about
- claims well qualified in this area, acts mysterious (cue spooky music)
- offers nothing of own to start discussion, but promises lots if we meet their expectations

You seem like a troll, but hell I'll give you a chance. urbnxplrr give us something to work with here. Cough up the stories you have to share and maybe we'll share a few back.

Look closely, dude (or dudette)... That's a digital overlay on the picture, not a real tag. I'm 53 years old and have long since outgrown tagging the places I visit. I simply tag my photos digitally to preserve my copyrights! You know, like an artist signing his paintings. I guess that's ego, so you could be right about the 'shithead' part.

Thanks for the wise advise. I'd hate to bore anyone with repetition. I am new to the board...( a week, maybe) in fact I'm new to ANY board, UE being my only real hobby and the first time I've ever done anything online except email, surf and pay bills... I've never even been in a chat room with anyone. So forgive me.

I'm 53 years old, a retired cop, an ex hippie and I've been an urban explorer for longer than most of you have lived, I expect. My closest friends are in college (mostly because I've never grown up beyond that age except in body) and I've been on both sides of this issue.

While you are busy policing the forum, you might pop in on the chat room. I've looked twice for about three minutes each and all I saw was a bunch of munchkins flirting and and spewing as much sexual innuendo as they could muster. I suppose urban exploration could make a good date.

I apologize if I came off sounding condescending. It surly wasn't my intent with that 1st post and I stand corrected for using all caps. I agree about the nervous part... That was why I thought it might be of some help to us all. I don't get the 'mysterious' part and I haven't a clue what a 'troll' is, but it doesn't strike me as very friendly.

Lastly, my initial post was lengthy enough w/o going into more specifics. I just wanted to know if others shared the same concerns or not. It seems this was all a mistake on my part. Thanks for your time.

Add to the list, this is his first post.

Urbnxplrr, you may well be sincere, but members here take a special delight in shredding and devouring trolls. Some of us are starting to drool in anticipation; whatever you do, don't say your a ghost hunter!

We also joke around a lot, except for me, because I'm a soulless bastard.
