information you post in private messages is not 100% private. it is stored in a database just like everything else, and if forum security issues require it, administrators are able to read these messages.
please keep this in mind when sending private information.
p.s. the old thread was deleted due to flaming. do not bring up any of the issues from that thread, here.

Your rules do say that mods or admins can delete posts/threads, but really, deleting posts that relate to you is a blatant CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
If this were real life, and a business environment, and you did this, you'd probably lose your job for deleting that thread (for doing something equivalent IRL). It's called abuse of power.
Yes, I'm well aware it's your site, your server, and you're admin, and you can do whatever you want. And yeah, you can do whatever you want.
But do you really think people are going to have ANY shred of respect left for you if you behave like this???? It DOES NOT matter who said what, or about whom, or my personal feelings about any of the people involved... all that matters is that you've made an error in judgement and abused your power. At best, the thread should have been locked.
Cause dude, while I like you plenty, and IRL we're good friends, but this is just really weak.
And as far as reading "private messages"... you'd better change them to "not really private, as Avatar-X will read them if he wants to invade your supposed privacy."
I hope you really think long and hard about what you said. Reading other users private messages just because you are the admin is a BLATANT abuse of your administrative powers. As bad of an abuse as you could get.
What if someone sent another user their personal phone number? Or very initmate details of their life to another friend on here that they didn't want read by anyone else? (for example, someone was pregnant.) Honestly, that's such an invasion of privacy, and hiding behind the cloak of "forum security" makes you sound just like George Bush... and that's not really an overstatement.
NO WHERE does it say in YOUR rules that private messages are NOT private. Nowhere at all.
Making an addendum here AFTER THE FACT does NOT make it right.
I think you owe everyone on here an apology for reading private messages... or at least that's what's being said by multiple people... and your post above certainly infers that you're reading private messages. And even the post that you can read others messages and reserve the right to shows really poor judgement.
Heed my words: It's behaviour like this that causes a revolt. It's behaviour like this that makes everyone in the forum lose all respect for you.
And Av, you know, I never thought I'd lose any respect for you... but this is just really bad. Please take steps to stop this from snowballing out of control.
I suggest you fix this before it explodes and destroys any cohesiveness that exists in the forum.
Those are just my opinions... I'd like the opportunity to talk to you about this. Give me a ring today.

I deleted the other thread because it was full of misinformation, and many lies and accusations. This was a private admin issue, that Asher took to the public forum and completly twisted around for maximum impact.
Let me make this 100% clear again: I only checked up on the private messages because some OTHER private information had ALREADY been leaked by SOMEONE ELSE, and I just wanted to find out who it was. I know that reading private messages is wrong, but so is leaking private administrative information, and I had to stop the leak.

You're right, regardless of the reason, it's wrong to read PMs. Alright: how about this: I promise to not do it again, and that nobody else will either, except in the situation where all admins agree that it is necessary to do so, in some future case. How's that?

I agree with Max: the thread should have been locked, not deleted. It seems that the thread was deleted for no other reason than the fact that it called into question the actions of Avatar regarding his reading of private messages and hacking into a user's email account. Av responded by deleting the entire thing, so that no one would ever see the evidence.
A damn shame.
