| | | just to let you guys know, in case it wasn't already clear... information you post in private messages is not 100% private. it is stored in a database just like everything else, and if forum security issues require it, administrators are able to read these messages. please keep this in mind when sending private information. p.s. the old thread was deleted due to flaming. do not bring up any of the issues from that thread, here.

| | | Uhm... I don't want to start another war, but one of the rules on the forum is that you can't remove your post, or modify it so much that it looses it's original meaning. Therefor, shouldn't mods adhere to the same thing? I mean, I know the other thread wasn't pretty, but....hehe...sometimes people need to let go now and then -Ex

| | | Re: private messages <Reply # 5 on 12/10/2003 10:24 AM >
| | | Av, YOUR words, when asked if posts could be deleted: "no, because then people would post shit, someone would reply, and then they'd delete it."
But then you turn around and say, well, I can do it if *I* want to... where's the fairness in that? Your rules do say that mods or admins can delete posts/threads, but really, deleting posts that relate to you is a blatant CONFLICT OF INTEREST. If this were real life, and a business environment, and you did this, you'd probably lose your job for deleting that thread (for doing something equivalent IRL). It's called abuse of power. Yes, I'm well aware it's your site, your server, and you're admin, and you can do whatever you want. And yeah, you can do whatever you want. But do you really think people are going to have ANY shred of respect left for you if you behave like this???? It DOES NOT matter who said what, or about whom, or my personal feelings about any of the people involved... all that matters is that you've made an error in judgement and abused your power. At best, the thread should have been locked. Cause dude, while I like you plenty, and IRL we're good friends, but this is just really weak. And as far as reading "private messages"... you'd better change them to "not really private, as Avatar-X will read them if he wants to invade your supposed privacy." I hope you really think long and hard about what you said. Reading other users private messages just because you are the admin is a BLATANT abuse of your administrative powers. As bad of an abuse as you could get. What if someone sent another user their personal phone number? Or very initmate details of their life to another friend on here that they didn't want read by anyone else? (for example, someone was pregnant.) Honestly, that's such an invasion of privacy, and hiding behind the cloak of "forum security" makes you sound just like George Bush... and that's not really an overstatement. NO WHERE does it say in YOUR rules that private messages are NOT private. Nowhere at all. Making an addendum here AFTER THE FACT does NOT make it right. I think you owe everyone on here an apology for reading private messages... or at least that's what's being said by multiple people... and your post above certainly infers that you're reading private messages. And even the post that you can read others messages and reserve the right to shows really poor judgement. Heed my words: It's behaviour like this that causes a revolt. It's behaviour like this that makes everyone in the forum lose all respect for you. And Av, you know, I never thought I'd lose any respect for you... but this is just really bad. Please take steps to stop this from snowballing out of control. I suggest you fix this before it explodes and destroys any cohesiveness that exists in the forum. Those are just my opinions... I'd like the opportunity to talk to you about this. Give me a ring today. el nerdo [last edit 12/10/2003 1:10 PM by el nerdo - edited 1 times]

| | | I only have one thing to say about this whole deal. Nothing is private on the internet, and if anyone believes that, you're sorely mistaken. Credit card #'s, personal information, etc, has all been stolen or hacked from the internet through the times. My ISP for work reads all the emails we send in and out, anything and everything that goes in them, get's read before it goes to it's destination. I think people need to just chill out and fucking relax a little. People are way to anal. If you're going to be worried about privacy, don't use the internet. Any moderated thing on the internet is moderated for a reason, that's why those people are there. Like who cares, if it's that big of a deal, then leave, don't keep going on and on, just leave, see ya... good bye and good riddance! Frost UE, it's an addiction.
Why is marijuana not legal? Why is marijuana not legal? Its a natural plant that grows in the dirt. You know what's not natural, 80 year old dudes with hardons. Thats not natural, but we got pills for that. We're dedicating all our resources to keeping the old guys erect but we're puttin people in jail for smoking something that grows in the dirt. |

| | | Sigh.... I deleted the other thread because it was full of misinformation, and many lies and accusations. This was a private admin issue, that Asher took to the public forum and completly twisted around for maximum impact. Let me make this 100% clear again: I only checked up on the private messages because some OTHER private information had ALREADY been leaked by SOMEONE ELSE, and I just wanted to find out who it was. I know that reading private messages is wrong, but so is leaking private administrative information, and I had to stop the leak.

| | | So explain how "private" admin info is ANY DIFFERENT than "private" user messages???? They're not. Both have the reasonable expectation that they are to be kept "private". So if you didn't like the fact that someone spread private admin info, how in god's name can you accept that you went around and did the EXACT same thing??? You can't. Two wrongs do NOT make a right. Period. You can either admit that there is a double standard on this site, or you can apologize for abusing your powers. The other party was wrong. But so were you. Own up to what you did, or accept that your rules don't mean shit.

You're right, regardless of the reason, it's wrong to read PMs. Alright: how about this: I promise to not do it again, and that nobody else will either, except in the situation where all admins agree that it is necessary to do so, in some future case. How's that? [last edit 12/10/2003 3:43 PM by Avatar-X - edited 1 times]

I appreciate the fact that Av was big enough to say he did something wrong... Av is my friend. Both UEing and in real life. And he's a good person. I understand how you can get caught up in this kind of stuff. All I really wanted to hear was that what he did was wrong. So for that, thanks Av. I have even more respect for you then I did before any of this shit happened.

| | | Wow. This is such transparent bullshit that it's almost funny. The original thread that Ninj started should have been simply locked, or this "flaming" selectively deleted. Of course, Avatar-X seems to regard any criticism of himself "flaming," regardless of content or veracity, so I suppose this was inevitable. The issue was quite a bit larger than merely reading PMs, and everyone who read the original thread knows it. Totally fucking pathetic. I suppose it's a good illustration of the very issue at hand: the untrustworthiness of this board's administrator, and his tendency to abuse his power. *sigh* This place is going to be a lot less interesting without that firecracker Asher Archive around ... although Gug knows I can hardly blame her for leaving, under the circumstances. - Max "Johnny 5" Action PS - If anyone happens to have a copy of her public farewell, send me a copy, as I missed it ...

What the fuck.... I ignore that thread after I post there, and all of the sudden Asher's gone. What the hell happened, and I'd like a copy of that farewell too. I agree with Max: the thread should have been locked, not deleted. It seems that the thread was deleted for no other reason than the fact that it called into question the actions of Avatar regarding his reading of private messages and hacking into a user's email account. Av responded by deleting the entire thing, so that no one would ever see the evidence. A damn shame. ~D

No, but I do consider bringing up completly unrelated issues, such as my friends or other hobbies, for the sole purpose of insulting me, to be flaming.
