Ghillie suits are made using standard camouflage jacket and pants, then they have camo netting stitched onto them.

The camo netting lets the sniper stick bits of bushes into his ghillie suit between all the bits, but makes moving hard.

They are easy enough to make, and the US army has attempted to put some designs into production. But like I said, it's mostly a suit of thick camo netting.

The camo netting can be cut and tied together using black string, or stitched onto clothes. Camo netting can be bought for about $10 at any good surplus store.

...on my suits, I used hot glue to attach the netting, and also to attach pieces of elasic fabric (1/2"x3"in) to attach plants/grass... I don't use it for exploring though...

If memory serves, there's a nwe type of military camo that's designed to blur your figure whilst moving. I've only seen it a couple of times, but it does seem to work.
The camo is computer generated squares of some kind or another, and is done in natural colors (your standard black, OD Green, etc... not withstanding). I'm looking around for pictures of it, but I haven't been able to find them.

I saw several of them here in Belgium but I doubt it would be of any use to blur yourself. I never tested it and I'n not gonna buy one since they pattern sucks big time. I use a kind of Bundeswerh Flecktarn which is also used by the Belgian army. I always go in camo, people here ask less questions when you look like a military.

Yeah, the pattern does look like it sucks, doesn't it?
That may be why it works so well - I've actually seen people wearing this. They've walked straight past a bundle of pine trees and, from about 40 feet away or so, it was hard as hell to determine where they ended and where the trees began.

All of my suits are former U.S. army camo suits. I have about five of them for specific kinds of areas (i.e. sewer, old office, badly damaged place.). All of them have special features, such as my sewer camo. has faux leaves, and simulated sludge attatched to the back.

I've ran into some mean hostile county workers down there. The public works company here cleans the places sporadically, so you never know when you go into a myrtle beach sewer.

Interesting, you must get more debris or leaves and crap in your drains. St. Paul sewer util does not seem to clean too often, not often enough to worry about at least.

The digital camo is great for people who are at distance away from you. Trust me that stuff over here is awsome. I also saw some of the green stuff do wonders befroe I got over here.

Im sure some of this has been beaten to death but here goes.

For night time use.

Black - Actually looks blacker then the shadows. It is easier to identify the shape of a person in black clothes then one might releasie. Unless your a tunnel rat or deep a building, there is almost always light. Because of this the eye determines the dark area easier. This allows you to be spoted a little faster then you would with a few other colors. (Please note this info is from first hand testing and also is documented by special forces and other scientists. However I am not telling you to throw out your black.) Also black in urban enviroments stands out a lot more then normal. Figuring most backgrounds will not be burnt black it negates some of its usefulness. Infact most spec ops dont wear black often if at all.

Dark Blue - One of the prefered colors during night time operation. It more closely resembles the light the eye percieves as a shadow. Also when shined on by light the mind thinks of it as a shadow more often then the dark blue. This occurs in quick sweeps.

Dark Reds/Maroune(SP) - This is another great color that effects the eyes in odd ways at night. This also resembles background colors that the eye does not destinguish as well at night or in low light conditions.

Dark grey - With no light shined on it the dark grey is almost nearly black. Also its very effective in urban enviroments.

Please note that all the other colors besides black will be less obvious to cop as hoodlum colors. How many times have you heard of a cop yelling at a guy for wearing dark blue or dark grey, or even dark red. Just food for thought.

thats a good point. I've never been caught, and I've never worn camo but i never wear anything brighter than dark jeans either. If i do get caught, Its probably not going to be inside a building, its probably going to be when I'm coming or going, and if a cop or a security guard sees someone wearing camo, I think there intentions are much more obvious. If i do ever get caught, I want to be able to say "sorry officer, I didin't realize that I wasn't supposed to be on the grounds" or better yet "I'm just walking through" (although you'd have to be further away from the location for the second one to work). I had those excuses ready when I was walking back from a site with my friend and a guard shined a flashlight at me, luckily a "how you doing" was enough to get him off our backs, but I doubt that would've went as smoothly if we were wearing camo.

I wear camoflage as a result of the only decent UE clothing being manufactured by the army.

Unless you think wondering around in noisey brightly coloured outdoorswear would be a good idea...

Dark grey...

It's also important to know that in low-light environments, the eye detects light intensity rather than color.

And it detects movement first and foremost.
Just stand still, and unless you're wearing yellow plaid, odds are you won't be seen, unless someone is actively looking for you.

Not to say that camo is a bad idea, just that it's not always a necessity.

That being said, here's my camo.
I use it to infiltrate German discoteques:

The colors are also useful if a light is flashed accross you rather quickly. Its a lot more effective then black at times. I prefer the dark blue the most. However that is just personal choice. I have worn camo a lot as well for operations during hours of darkness where the quickest exit was woods.

In my experiance, cover and concealment is way more important then camoflauge...

For example, if you are to hide from somone, never hide near the biggest object, or the object that first catches your eye in a room/area.

Look through cover when possible, rather then looking over anything

Make all movements slowly and casually.

Practice ghost walking (walking heel-toe, rolling the along the edge of your foot).

And as for colours, dark blue is generally accepted as the colour least detected by the human eye in a low light situation. I believe red is the other extreme, the most easily seen colour, as it does not rely on light to be discernable.

I wonder whats behind THAT door?

I believe there is a good reason this topic should be disscussed once in a while not only for the newbies but also for the old guys. Not only to communicate ideas and discourage misconceptions, but to remind us the best cover and concealment may be blown by a loose article of clothing sticking out. Lets face it we dont see 360 degrees at every possible altitude.

Also to clarify the red as I was speaking of is a dark brownish red. Thats what makes the differnce to the eyes. So you are correct in your statment but miss understood me. I know many of you old troops are tire of seeing this but ignorence of new people and the old guys new to the board may get something out of this. Hopefully a mod builds a newbie section soon so we dont get complaints.

Yeah, black and camo patterns look really fishy to a cop. I know. I was told by the cop who detained me.

I got a police officer kicked off the force for arresting me because I was wearing camouflage. He got charged with harrassment, unessacery arrest and abuse of power.

I got released with £50 compensation. (Oh and with a big smile on my face too)

Cops abuse their power far too much. The one that arrested me just walked up to me in the street saying "why the hell are you wearing camouflage?". I mean as if it was his business to know! I could've been a military cadet for all he knows, or just on my way to a deer hunt, or off to a paintball match, or anything.

Know your rights is all I'm saying. And see if you can resite them on the spot. "By article 15 chapter 3 page 22 of the citizens rights bill, a police officer may not arrest a British citizen on public streets without proper cause or reason to do so. A policeman may also not handle a British citizen on public streets if no crime has been detirmined." or something like that. That was a made up example but it's good to be able to come out with that - the cops won't argue with someone who knows their rights.

Although I gave a made up example, such rights do exist. A policeman cannot legally arrest you on pure speculation or assumption. You must be either wanted for a crime, suspected of committing a crime, or carrying an offensive weapon in order for a lawful arrest to take place. No police officer is allowed to arrest you as a suspect unless he can prove on the spot or at the station that he had reason to do so. (matching description from witness)

Please leave this sort of post to pm - I would rant on at you but I feel particularly sorry for all the moderators and administrators who have to wade through all the crap that us users spew out all over their nice shiny forum, so I'll keep this purely informative.

If it doesn't add to the discussion, don't post it. Just a rule of thumb that I've developed. If you are really desperate to post something, at least try and contribute to the real debate going on, perhaps with a little info or advise. That way people will be able to see that you are more than just a shallow little shit who can't keep his hateful thoughts to himself.

OK?

<ontopic>
With camouflage, is there anything in particular that is good to hide in? Like a certain type of bush or whatever? Cause I am always looking around for possible places to dash into at the very last minute, but I often don't consider which bush would be most affective.

i tend to end up with camo pants because thats what i have that seems to fit my needs as far as indestructability and having various pockets. And my vest happens to be almost olive drab (it is nice though as it has removable sleeves) i use it for the vast pocketpsace it offers. My boots are plain black boots from magnum nothing to special aobut htem as far sa camoflauging and i use a camelbak instead of a backpack and it happend to have quite a bit of red on it so not very stealth and i often have my camera mounted on my tripod and walk around carryin it with its legs fully extended so no sneakiness from that either.
