| | | Yap yap yap... I assume you guys have protected free speech in Canada so I don't see what the beef is about. Jester - You say you don't post locations on the LDB that you are concerned about activity in. Good for you. Way to use good judgement. Av- You think this information should flow, not remain stagnant and only available to some elite group of UE'ers - Bravo. The crunch that I am seeing here between you two is that Jester is concerned stupid people will post too much information about some sites leading to a "closure" to exploration. Av is concerned that trying to restrain what people can post/see will detract from the boards function. I also think Jester is looking to share his information with an upstanding group. In this particular instance I will have to stand with Av. I don't think this site is desinged for what Jester wants to do - speek openly and freely with out having to worry about what he, or other might disclose. I do think that Av has done a tremendous amount of work and an excellent job providing the tools necessary for such an open environment in private threads and hopefully soon with LDB entries. Perhaps what you should do Jester is use the available tools to setup a thread where you can express yourself as you see fit, make it private and invite everyone whom you respect. You can add new users to your thread(s) on your own impressions of users from the public board or from your trusted members. Screen as many people as you want out of YOUR private threads. This way you get the conduit for communication you want but relieve Av of the responsibility for baby-sitting it on a day to day basis. You can be as elitest as you want in your private threads and no one will give you any hassle. I think this board has been a great public resource and should remain such, and I think the tools are here to set up the relationships/forums you think you need in addition to what is currently here.

| | | No, I actually wasn't looking for a place to share really secure info. For that I would email people or use IM or something. I think general info and such should be totally accessable, but I don't feel that more sensitive things should. There is such a thing as giving too much information. In this venue it's potentially given to 605.60 million people (according to a recent survey) that are on the internet. So everything you say and every bit of info you give will undoubtedly be viewed by good and bad people out there. So next time someone wrecks a place (or seals a place or burns a place to the ground you've posted info about), I do hope you wonder if you had anything to do with it happening.

| | | That's exactly why I don't share location info Jester. I don't want to be responsible for that kind of problem. I'm either very vague or say nothing at all.

| | | C C , I didn't mean you as in you in particular, I meant the broader You as in every one that reads it... I think the way you do it is a good choice. Of course we have lots of great info here that can be put to nefarious uses, and probably has been already. Not just locations, but tips. Urban exploration and burglary utilize a lot of the same abilities, yet walk on opposite sides of an ethical line. How many on the other side have used our experience to help themselves I wonder... But, I shall not be concerning myself with what happens. I do my part to satisfy my morality of the situation, and certainly don't feel responsible for anyone elses...

| | | Look guys, I can see everyone's side here. I think information should flow freely to those who seek it. But I have to agree with Jester. The places I visit are special to me and are a greatly limited resource where I am at. I think the idea is that *I* am not concerned about disclosing too much information about the places *I* visit (because I have control of that), but *others* that may visit the same places I do may be posting too many details and unwittingly inviting in those who do not "take only pictures, leave nothing but foot prints".

Posted by Avatar-X - A new mode will be added to the Location DB: Private Locations. Authors can make locations and then decide on a list of people who are allowed to see it, kind of like Private Boards.

Great idea Av, I really like it.

Good plan, Av. Keeps it simple - solves the problem.

| | | I think its ridiculous for anyone to fret about this. By blocking up the LBD some people don't get access to a plethora of information. If I was a vandal I wouldn't bother looking to a website for places to destroy... would you? I would just break stuff and go home. If your concerned with authorities protecting buildings more then that is understandble. Maybe don't restrict entire posts in the LBD - just restrict the information to gain access/directions to the particular site. People who actually live in that area would hopefully still be able to find it. Do you really believe authorities take the time to look over websites for places to lock up better. They know damn well any abandoned builings are going to attract restless teenagers and I really don't believe that the reason security at the malt plant etc has been elevated has ANYTHING to do with its photo stuck on a website. Also, I admit I haven't read all 105 posts - but is this discussion directed towards abandoned buildings or drains/places that aren't going to be locked down overnight? My 2 cents - UEXplorer

| | | As long as you don't gift-wrap directions to site and the entranceways to complete strangers, I have no problem with anyone. And if anyone does provide specifics in the forum that might be too revealing, remove the post and explain that the security of a site can't be compromised. I assume that making it clear that that kind thing won't be tolerated should be a clear enough warning to everyone. ~D

| | | I don't think the quiz is a good idea. I think forum pressures do a good job of weeding out the idiots. I voted 2, but I'd prefer that everything was left alone, but the whole site was excluded from search engine robots; one text file, two lines of text. People would still find and contribute when they find links on one of the many sites that link here, but there wouldn't be random people finding information on a location with Google. I wouldn't be here if I had to go through that quiz, though that might not be a bad thing. I know that some of the interesting people wouldn't be here either.
