Aggressive Moderation
< on 11/10/2003 4:54 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

I am just posting this as general information for everyone here, including the other moderators. Starting today I am going to begin moderating threads much more aggressively than I have in the past, in regards to off-topic posts and general stupidity. This is in response to a short discussion the moderators had last week about this subject.

Some of you may not like this, but some of you may appreciate the lower number of unrelated and silly tangents in otherwise interesting threads. For those of you who will not like this, T.S.

I will be more tolerant of off-topic posts in the "Other" forum, but for the main exploration areas I plan on being a little more active with the "remove" button.

Thanks!

Would you, and the other moderators, be so kind as to post something when you do this? There's no point to agressive moderation if people don't notice they are being moderated.

Oh we'll post all right "Ben"... if that is your real name...

It's a good point Ben, because if there's nothing about why something was done, how will anyone know whats ok and not ok... I'm going to make a point of letting a poster know why something was deleted more often than I would have previously.

Currently when a mod deletes a post, they have to enter a reason why. They cannot delete a post without entering this reason, as far as I know. Obviously regular form users whose posts are deleted do not see this reason. I will definitely make a point of telling a user why their post was deleted through a PM.

as long as you give a reason as to why you did something than I see no problem(as long as my posts don't get deleted )

If I had a nickle or dime for every post one of you guys deleted.... I'd have enough to donate to Av. Ok I'll try to cut back on the stupid posts, but sometimes I'm still gonna be dumb so instead of hating me, can you just delete my post and get on with it?

I don't have anything against you, but I will delete your posts when they have absolutely no relevance. I'm watching you fokker...
I'm gonna be all over nonsensical posts like Crossfire on a fat kid.. no that doesn't sound right... like cake on Crossfire...hmmm, thats not it either... but you understand, it won't be pretty

Anyways, just try to post with some actual substance.

Cake on Crossfire? Yeah, that wouldn't be pretty. Now, ice cream...

Don't worry Matt, we've gotten pretty adept at deleting your posts. And thank you for trying to cut back on the stupid posts. You don't need to post a smilie or 'LOL' every time you read something funny. Laughing to yourself in front of the computer is perfectly acceptable.

I posted a reply in the CMP-Ontario forum about how malt is being shut down tight. I went back there tonight and there is no post from me at all! If posts are going to be taken off the website, I think that sending a private msg over the website, to notify the person, would be so much more convenient. Right now, I dont know if my comp f*ckd up, or my post was taken off. If I was notified it would save me from typing up that msg again, and the moderator from having to delete it again! Thanks!

When you make a post with the exact way into a building what do you expect to happen? Use your brain.

Unfortunately my post did not have anything to do with entry into the building. It was more a post about the sadness I had because of the loss of malting, and I also talked about COT security, and I cracked a joke about it. I dont appreciate the "Use your brain" post, when clearly you were not the one that deleted it. Instead of you sticking up for the other mods, why not have each admin just send a pm, OR leave the post there and just write "EDIT:content" or something! That way, we wont have these problems.

I would at least suggest that you guys not make this retroactive. IOW, don't go back and start deleting posts from older threads just 'cause. If your response to this is "Who has time to do that anyway?" then just ignore this...

On one forum I moderated, if I saw a decent but off-topic discussion, I would transplant the cute little offshoot into a new thread. Again, this is more work, and that was on a truly threaded forum (where you replied to a specific post, not just the thread as a whole) so it was easy to do. But maybe if a really good discussion does develop, rather than nuking it you can advise people to make a new thread and give them a chance to pick up and move before nuking what's there?

Aggressive moderation is not always a bad thing but, as I am sure you are aware, you are going to have user backlash no matter what you do.

I have moderated many forums with many different styles. At least the maturity level of this forum appears to be much greather then many others. This should help make your job that much easier.

Good luck with your efforts, I wish you well

Actually you gave the location of an entrance at the Malt Plant. Granted that EVERYONE knows about it, it was still a stupid thing to do. Frankly, I don't have time to explain to every person why I removed a post -- I have a life outside UER, you see. If something is gone I'd assume we took it down and deal with it like an adult. It's an online forum for god's sake.

Shocking abuse of authority!
I agree however and if this very post was deleted, I could give a rat's ass.
A moderator informed me yesterday of someone's post being deleted that effected something I said afterward, That was a decent thing to do, I respect moderators cause I'm sure it sometimes feels more like chaperoning a high school dance, than a message board.

Thank you, Asher, for making this point. Well put.

Not once have I seen a post removed for a stupid reason, and I'm sure it's going to stay that way. I also am not going to give a reason for every post that I delete - especially if the content of said post is "BWAHAHA LOL u rok". If the post I delete is somewhat borderline, I will likely send a PM to the poster and explain why I did what I did.

Maybe that shouldn't be considered aggressive moderation, maybe it should be considered smart moderation.

Actually I didnt give a location to an entrance, and you clearly arent reading any of my posts that I am making because you are making the same statements over and over! I did make other posts above on the cmp page about locations that they have most likely destroyed, but in this post, NONE at all. Thats ok though, you clearly couldnt give a rats ass, and I dont blame you, if i was the MOD id be doing the same thing. Just erasing the msg and writing a reason would be a time saver, and would prevent posts like these.

Crossfire:No, this wasnt an AHAHAHAH, KOOL!, , THATS AWSOME post

also, if your so concerned about entrance info, why not just delete all my other posts on that thread, maybe you ment to delete one of my posts and accidently deleted the wrong one...anyways im done

As a mod, I can still see deleted posts, though they have a funky red background. You did post in the Ontario forum specific information on how to get into CMP. If you would like me to PM you the contents of your post, I will, just so you can see what Asher is talking about.

We are concerned about people posting specific information on how to enter a property - especially one like CMP. I don't see any point to deleting other posts of yours that do not contain that kind of information.
