Some great pictures someone took right after the hurricane:

Wow.. amazing shots.

the flooding from that storm was beyond belief. My father inlaws house was 10 feet of the ground, but still flooded 6 feet in the falls. 16 feet of water!

F'ing insane.

you know, i had been considering going to new orleans at some point (partly to help, partly because i know there are amazing photos to be had; not UE related). but i think that reading something like that would make me more adamant about not UEing places....

One thing Dad still says is that people are still living in tents. this is the only issue have about urbexing down there. its just a total lack of respect for others misfortune. any exploring I would do when I get there in Jan 08, would come no where near a persons or personal loss. My conscious with fuck with me for long time for invading someones home or land. strictly industry or government.

I was there about 4 months before Katrina, and almost all of those poor people barely got by then. I know cool shots would come out, but we need to remember people, animals, lovedones died and in some places are baried here. this is their grave.

personally i think shots that show a lot of emotion are great. and with something like new orleans and the people barely getting by, it could bring more attention to their plight and give a human face to the tragedy. exploiting others' suffering for commercial gain would be an entirely different (unethical) form of photography.

As for the water damage at six-flags, it might not be as bad as it looks. Valley Fair in MN is right on the river and some of their rides flood almost every spring. I'm not sure if they're designed specifically to withstand that flooding or not, but once it dries out it usually takes them like less than a week to get them back up and running. Alot of the stuff, while not intended to be submerged in skank-water, is exposed to wind and rain.

As for the ethics/morals of ue'ing a disaster site, who cares? Do what you want, and tell people who think they're the morality police to go to hell. Would you feel bad afterwards? It wouldn't be like you trashed the buildings, or killed everyone, so what's the big deal if you go look around and take pictures? Sooner or later somebody is going to drive a bulldozer over it all anyway. If you aren't comfortable ue'ing a disaster site, don't. But don't give anyone else any shit for it, they've got just as much right to give you shit for not doing it.

New Orleans is still majorly fucked, east new orleans (where most of teh exploring is) is really fucked still.

Anyways disregard my last post. today before coming back to the FLA we stoped at 6 flags again. while we were there we see a car in the parking lot. We run back to where we entered the park and now face the task of getting out of the parking lot and back to the neighborhood behind it where we parked. We hit the ground flat in some overgrown weeds while the suv drive right by us looking in our exact direction no more than 5 feet away from us. I thought we were done for. Then we no longer see the suv and break through the parking lot for the fence. about 15 seconds after we get out of the fence military police stop to ask what we are doing (we have tattoos on our faces and everywhere else for that matter so its hard for us to blend in or look legit anywhere). we tell them we are getting some shots of the six flags sign and offer our id's they say its fine, just know the park and the neighborhood behind it that we parked in is heavily guarded, and told us to carry on with what we are doing. we then start walking back to the hood we parked in and were stopped once again by another military police unit. We tell them the same thing and then we are informed we are in one of the worst parts of New Orleans and they stopped us cause we are white and we are the minority here. Anyone thinking about doing six flags, know that security on it IS tight, but it IS do'able. late late at night is my best advice to you, and remember it is ina very bad area. Though it looks nice and suburban we were informed just the road six flags is on and surrounding neighborhood has had 8 murders in the past month and constant cars being burned on the side of the road.
It is sad to see New Orleans in such apoor state and classism and race is obviously a tenent in the situation. But just know and understand what it is and have fun checking everything out, as far as UE there is alot to offer. I will have pictures up tomorrow night in the correct geographical section of the website.

Nice report Bishop. Sounds like the Nat'l Guard is cool long as your not looting or thieving.

Whats the civil police presence like out in the hood did you see regular patrols?

not too many civil police but heavy military police presence, and I mean heavy. I still think they would take you in for being inside the fence in 6 flags and they stressed not being in any of the houses in the neighborhoods. Just be very very cautious and very very careful, most people are quite understanding if you are holding a camera and are from out of town though. so its rather easy to get out of things as long as your not caught blatantly being somewhere your not supposed to be or doing anything rather suspicious for that matter.

Alot of people are understanding, but everyone is different. One cop might drive by and have no problem with what you're doing, and the next might decide to teach you a lesson, or make an example out of you, or maybe just take his bad mood out on you. That's the same pretty much anywhere you go. Some areas are known for cops that are assholes, and some are known for cops that don't care what you're doing unless you're waving a gun around screaming, but in general, the frequency/saturation of police presence is a pretty important detail, because if theres a way they can make trouble for you, eventually one of them will, whether it's the third cop you see that does it, or the thirtieth. ...Isn't consistency great?

bulging package will get you everywhere in life. Had I known six flags was in the 9th ward (worst area of new orleans) and one of the highest crime areas in the country maybe we would have planned it a little better. It came down to the idea of not knowing the risks makes it risk free. Your not going to be afraid to pet a lion if you dont know it will rip you to pieces. ignorance is bliss sometimes I guess. If that makes any sense. I suck at wording things on the computer.

anyways I dunno if this was posted but..
