You guys, sharon is right...New Orleans has some really worth while stuff to explore. I wonder if the old abandoned Lincoln Beach amusement park is still there? I haven't been down there since the storm (but I did in fact live there my whole life until almost 2 years ago), and I promise, there are more abandonments than you can shake a stick at; and that's before the storm! Not much underground stuff. Though I have explored some utility tunnels under the French Quarter close to Canal street. The police need to be considered. Some may kick your ass and rob you (better than going to OP lock-up I promise), but they are rarely ever about in areas where they can't hustle a hooker etc.

I was actually out that way last August visiting a friend of mine who lives down there. Luckily his place was in the "sliver by the river" as they call the 20% that didn't flood. We went to visit, spend some $ where it was needed, and yes, take pictures to try to make sense of it all. Right now I am actually somewhat in-between jobs so I'm thinking once I sort something new out, I may pick up a nice digital camera and go back down for a week of just photographing. These two were actually from a "good" area of town that was not very hard hit. I have a ton more but since I was shooting film, there's a lot of work to be done to get them web ready. I've also been thinking about some sort of web-presentation of them but haven't come up with the right way to do it yet. Also just haven't had the time to really put into it.

I should also add that while practically the entire city could be considered an exploration... you'll be walking down a street that looks totally normal and then come across a completely destroyed house or building, it does sort of have it's own rules. Yes, people will say hi to strangers on the street but they have also been known to try to shoot first and ask questions later if you're on their property. It's an odd combination.

Also, it's physically and emotionally DRAINING to be there. Just looking back through my photos is exhausting, probably another reason I haven't done much with them yet.

While I do think that it may be "offensive" to some people to explore NO.... I have to bring up Chernobyl again.... only in reference to people saying how tacky it is to want to explore a disaster area. Chernobyl is on many people's top ten's, what makes it all that different from NO? Seriously? Is it the time that has passed, or the fact that they are trying to rebuild NO? And what about battlefields.... or even a house where someone was murdered? Its all tragic. Not disasters, but definitely tragic. Believe me, I can understand how "exploring" New Orleans can be offensive. We had Hurricane Hugo here, and while it wasn't as bad as Katrina (and I think that this being a less densely populated and higher than sea level area helped) there was plenty of devastation. And it was personal. People lost alot and were trying to recover. I was only in the 6th grade at the time, and I was worried about what was happening, so at no point did I think it was cool. But if I ran across a place now that was damaged and abandoned because of the storm, hell yeah, I am going to check it out. I just personally disagree with all the people crying "don't do it!! its a tragedy!!" Cuz that would make quite alot of places forbidden. Even asylums and even more recent abandoned hospitals. Might not be a large scale tragic place, but can you imagine the hundreds or thousands of individual tragedies that took place there? OK....I'm off of my soapbox now..... about that anyways.... As far as the flood insurance thing goes, I know from personal experience that even if it is made clear that you should have it, people bitch because they don't want to pay extra, cuz a flood is never going to happen to them. Just human mentality. And yes, some companies don't press the issue, because they don't want to have to pay out. Either way, its all about money. The evacuation plan.... yes they should have had an iron clad on in effect, in case this happened, but realistically, it doesn't happen like that. And sometimes even when you do have one, it doesn't work as well as it should. We had a mandatory evacuation here a few years back, that had the interstates leading out looking like a parking lot. If I recall correctly, more people died on the interstate from natural causes than from the storm.... because it actually hit closer to where most people were evacuating to. And I was smart enough to make the trip on the back roads, and made it to NC in record time..... only to have to sit through the storm up there and avoid flooded areas on the trip back home..... where nothing happened. We have so many hurricane scares here over the years, that I can't even remember the name of that storm, and most people aren't sure when to pack up and leave, cuz it could be like Hugo and hit us hard, or it could be like other storms and veer off at the last minute......

Yes. That is all.

The former Lincoln Beach Amusement Park is an over-grown fenced in field of tall grasses. All that remains are two signs (arrows) that are missing their lettering. As for the police, while I was there over the New Year, I saw more cops than I had ever seen in a major city (NYC, Chicago, Madrid, etc.) in my entire life. On the other hand, the abandonments look tempting. Just find a safe place to park!

Did it Monday. It was the very first thing we did right when we arrived in New Orleans.

It is not active at all, and from the looks of it there isnt any attempt to fix the damage. The damages arent that great, but it is enough to cost a pretty penny and keep teh park closed. everything is still in there, its like the evacuated for the storm and never came back. literal a case of everyone just up and leaving and it now being a ghost park. gift shops still full of water damaged souvenirs. restaurants with bad food and everything else, even arcades full of stuffed animals and games. We climbed the coasters and pretty much had free reign of the place, we were still pretty stealth though just in case. I dunno if anyone has done it already but I deem it explorable. So have at it.

pics coming later this week.

Did you drive through Biloxi or Gulfport? My father inlaw lives there and said the area is still pretty empty and looks like it did right after the storm in most parts. We are going there in Jan 08 and cant wait to explore.
