Perhaps an option could be added in the profile to turn off the festive floating Santa, Reindeer, Snowman and Elf?

That sounds good, I'm finding the Santas and what-not to be distracting.

I tried the page styles>no style thing but it's messing with the page format and making it really weird.

I think it's pretty cool, Av. I've been having a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit this year and this gave me a nudge in the right direction! From one wolf to another, a big long Merry Christmas Howl to you......

Tim Berners Lee would kick your ass for this.

Learn how to make good websites.

But let's try to act like adults here. I sympathise 100% with the people who are going 'over the top' about this. It's a total disaster.

But maybe the administration could put a message on the front page, letting people know how to change the theme. Putting design ability aside, having users delve into a 5 page 'What the F***!?' thread to find out how to change a theme, isn't a good example of top-notch web administration.

Someone like myself, who talks PHP more comfortably than English, will have no bother interpreting the phrase 'Change the FID in the URL'. But your average photographer/explorer?

Come on people. Front page announcement is the answer quite obviously.

In all fairness, that's a pretty disrespectful comment to be throwing around.

Just because you can't see the fault in the whole Christmas theme, doesn't mean you're right. Not by a long shot.

You've got to realise that there are people in the web-development industry who take an active interest in their job, like many people in other professions (Maybe if you try hard, andrea, you could think of a few others). As a web-developer today, there are strict standards to stick to. Keeping sites XHTML valid, as well as making sites accessible to disabled people, is a major issue that must be addressed. When you're good at this sort of thing you pick up the ability to immediately tell good sites from bad sites.

Now I realise this is an Urban Exploration forum, but as with any society, you've got to realise that you'll have the odd web-developer kicking around. Now because my profession is of personal interest to me, it means I'm naturally going to criticize stuff that looks wrong. Okay the Christmas theme is cute at first, it got a chuckle from me, but it's more the accessibility issues that annoy me.

1. There should be a way to disable this
2. Yes, we've established that there is, BUT...
3. That should be made clear on the front page, rather than halfway through a 5-page thread.

That's where the web administration fails in this instance.

Your comment is fairly stupid, since you obviously don't know much about this field. I don't know what you do for a living, but if you decide to make a comment about something based on your professional knowledge, I wouldn't be cutting that up.

Taking this 'shit' seriously, as you chose to put it, is what pays my rent.

Ok, here's how to get rid of it.

Push and hold the power button on your computer.

Walk away.

Done.

It's not a commercial site, realize that.
It's Av's site to do what he wants with. It's no different than every store you go to this time of year filled with piles of christmas junk and blaring christmas songs repeatedly. Except, here you do have a way out, by simply using an alternate interface for the time being.

And we lowered it?

Here is a way to solve that:

1. Turn off said computer.
2. Go outside and get some fresh air.
3. Go explore.
4. Come back and post some photos and information when you are ready.
5. Wash hands and do again.

Maybe we haven't quite established this just yet...

This site isn't public domain. It's a private site run by a private citizen, mostly out of his own pocket and donations. Even us you use the site, generally speaking, you have no say in how the site will look. It's not yours. It doesn't belong to you, or any company, or any organization; it belongs to Avatar-X, and if he see's fit to have floating gifs moving around the screen, then thats his choice. I think they're a little annoying, personally - I went into the chat, asked if they can be disabled in the browser I use, and got told no, they can't. Alright then, no big deal. They're not screwing up my computer, they're not doing anything harmful, they're just occasionally getting in the way. No harm, no foul.

If you dislike it so much, go to one of the other interfaces. Disable it in FireFox. Theres this whole thread on how to deal with it and all I've seen so far is people repeating their complaints and booing Av for putting these decorations up on his site. If you don't like it, no one's forcing you to come here and use the site, so stop complaining. Go to Wraiths or Infiltration.

The bottom line is, in the end, Av only chooses to listen to people when it comes to the running of his site. He has the final say in everything. Even if you don't like the gif's, theres alternatives, and continual bitching and moaning about it is pointless. The alternative solutions are listed here, theres no further need for complaints. If you don't have anything good to say about the layout, keep it to yourself and use one of them, because it's pretty obvious quite a few people like it, even if you don't.

Only one person faults the entire Christmas theme, but he admitted in chat that he hates ANY holidays. So hes a TINY minority, thankfully. Other people just do not like the animations floating on the screen.

And UER is not an educational or government, where they take that stuff seriously. I work for a major university in the IT field, see my signature for my titles. As a site designer, I am now being forced to redesign hundreds of web-pages that rely on tables to use <DIV> tags. It's absurd as it gives me less control, takes up more time that could be spent doing other things (besides my usual surfing of the internet)... but hey, I get paid the same nomatter what.

I doubt many blind people use UER because it holds zero interest to them. Disabled? What is causing the site to become 100% disfuntional? Nothing. Disabled people are more than likely going to be viewing the site with no page styles anyways, which is VERY EASY TO TURN OFF VIA THE VIEW -> PAGE STYLES MENU IN FIREFOX. LET ME REPEAT THAT:

TURN OFF PAGE STYLES IN FIREFOX VIA VIEW -> PAGE STYLES

Perhaps we can get a blinking tag.

that's a pretty shallow reason to let a little difference in opinions lower your opinion of a whole site. petty if you ask me.

there's all different people out there with all different opinions i think it's better to appreciate the variety to keep things interesting than just to hate everybody that doesn't agree with your perspective.
